So, you’re wondering what the differences between a Fender Jazz and a Fender Precision really boil down to, right? They might have come off the same drawing board, but if you think they sound the same, you're wrong. They probably feel the same to play? Wrong again. In today’s episode Scott and Ian try to settle a debate that’s raged on for decades.

I love hearing the accents challenge! I hope you guys eventually cover the bass 6 and the first five string by fender, and maybe get into the early low B era basses. Also, Mono Neon, and how Ian ended up with his flannel!

Hahaha! Great comment, buddy! Not sure MonoNeon ever WEARS a flannel, however. Maybe inside out and on fire? Haha!

Anyone else love a hybrid? P pickups and jazz neck for me ALL DAY

I had a Fender P bass deluxe special that I gigged with for years. Maybe its just because I couldnt stand the pickguard (gold on white and maple... eugh) but I could NOT get into it. The sound worked for my band (sort of a modern rock foo fighters thing) and it sounded fine in the mix and solo'd. I just never felt at home on it. A lot of PJ basses are very 'sporty' if you know what I mean, and I think that kinda killed the vibe for me (that and the active PU's)

Just put one together in December w/a Squier CV 60s and a MIM rosewood fingerboard Standard Jazz neck, lefty reversed, Fender PV '63 pickup, & Thomastiks. It's lovely.

@@mcblahflooper94 Man I had a glam looking active PJ for about 5 seconds, it was instant dislike for me. I know what you mean about the 'sporty' thing which is kind of the opposite of the 'pickup truck' vibe of a regular precision. Weirdly I've just got my first JJ configuration and everything about it feels completely perfect, especially in the mix which took me off guard

A Passive PJ with a Jazz neck (1.5" nut). i.e G&L SB-2T or one of Fender's Custom Shop Precision Jazz basses are my favorite 4 strings at the moment.

Awesome chat loved it. You guys bounce off each other really well and made for a really interesting hour. I have a Fender Jag (with PJ config). I always felt it could (almost) walk both lines of the P & J. Wondered if anyone else out there had felt that too? This goes for many PJ basses. My Warwick really gets that P tone from the pick up.

So, since 1980 been on a 62 P mod with JPs with a slim line 78 rosewood neck. BOOM! Passive. Does it all in one. Punchy/Chewy and Scooped/Funky and Nasal/Teen Town at the roll of a dial!

Great video! One thing though, that no one seems to discuss, is what types of music each bass fits in. So, what is best for Rock, or Punk, or Jazz or pop. In a live setting different basses will fit differently in these styles. Which type would fit in best. That will surely help many people chose better, since they are much more relative to what they are looking for to fit their style.
From this video I got P basses are good for studio and Jazz basses for live. But surely this won't be for all styles?
Or should I just get a crappy cheap bass of each style (that may not sound great) to try and decide what I need?

I’m 50 and I’ve just started playing a PBass it’s a squier classic vibe. It’s great. But I’m a Jazz bass guy since the early 2000’s. Basses have come and go. But my Geddy Lee 2007 CIJ has been the best Jazz I’ve ever played

  • @handybunny

Thanks! Always a fun debate. I got a j-bass first. I have 3 j-basses and 1 p-bass. I just love the feel of the j-neck. In fact, my p-bass is fitted with a j-neck! It's also the original single coil original style p-bass. I think I'm into single-coil! If I were a studio musician, maybe I'd be more into the traditional (new pickup) p-bass. But I'm just a live player, and jazz basses cut through better IMO.

My bald bass playing brothers from other mothers haha, My first bass was a Peavy T-40, it was so heavy it was like a tree trunk with pick ups, but I thought it sounded good and I could get some different tones out of it, at the time I had no clue what a P or a J even was I just loved music and thumped the bass

The thing is you can get 1 great passive Sire of each (P5 and V5 for instance, not even their entry level) for $1K total. That's 2/3s of the price of the first Fender you'd be as confident buying, but only for one or the other. B-stock Squier CVs for even less, if you can bring them up to snuff yourself.
And say $150 for a handwound PBass replacement pickup for the Sire, $250 max for a handwound set for the Jazz. $14-1500 before tax. I think the question might actually be Which one first?

In the south they don’t say “Mountain Dew Coke”. You’d be asked what you would like to drink and if you wanted a sprite you’d say coke then they would asked “what kind” and you’d say “sprite”.

Yeah, Carol Kaye used to say she played the Fender bass! Poor girl, they made the only girl switch from her jazz guitar to a Jazz bass. Totally made her career, though. And gave us a LOT of bitchin music to listen to and play in her wake. (I hope nobody FLAMES me for my use of the word ‘bitchin’ in conjunction with a female bass player...)
