  • In his first ever full length interview, producer/engineer/mixer (and multi-instrumentalist) Brendan O'Brien talks about his contributions to many of the most significant records of the past generation. Check this out:
The Black Crowes, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Rage Against The Machine, Kings X, Korn, Audioslave, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Train, Incubus, Mastodon, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Killers, Paul Westerberg, The Offspring, Velvet Revolver etc.
Brendan is one of the most important and elusive musical icons who I have been wanting to talk to for the past 30 years. Here's my interview.

I was the engineer at Southern Tracks and worked w Bud on those records from 1995-2001. Definitely a great experience and the best environment possible to learn how to make records. I can offer a few additional technical bits. Room mics when I started were Lawson 47 and we soon after got a pair of Coles 4038’s.
Drops Of Jupiter piano was a C-24 into a Focusrite ISA pre followed by an 1178.
I wired the Y cables for toms. The split side was wired pin 3 hot. The output of the 57 was a bit lower than the 421 which provided the right balance between the two.
We used the stereo SSL channel comps for drum sub sometimes. Fatso was used a lot too.

In 2005/6ish, my band "The Sudden Rays" recorded at Southern Tracks with Karl Egsieker. After studying under Brendan for years, Karl was about to leave for CA to make his way as a producer. As a parting gift to Karl, Brendan and Mike Clark (former beloved owner of Southern Tracks) allowed Karl to record a band of his choosing which happened to be us. We were recording our record at the same time that Bruce and The E Street Band were recording Magic. We "snuck" in to STs between their sessions. And, as an extra bonus, Brendan even played keys on two of the tracks. Unassuming, professional, kind, and committed are the words that come to mind when I think of my very brief time with Brendan at Southern Tracks. Sadly, shortly after the session, the band disbanded as the guitar player/ lead vocalist left town for a "real" job. But, that time in my life was magic and meeting Brendan was a highlight of my musical life.
As it would happen, I am now playing bass in a project that Darren Dodd, the drummer of Rick's band, "Billionaire", is recording drums with. And, Darren, as it turns out, and I both used to play drums in the band, Dropsonic. Small world. Though, sadly, I've never met Rick throughout my musical endeavors. When he is ready to do a video on obscure Atlanta musicians that no one has heard of, I am ready! ;-)

    Rick -
I wanted to drop you a line to say how much I appreciate the VERY IMPORTANT and VALUABLE contribution that you are making to our culture.
I grew up loving music, studied recording engineering and was fortunate enough to find myself working in a major NYC recording studio in the 2000s. It felt like I got into that world right at the end of an era, but was so fortunate to experience working with great gear, tape machines, engineers, producers and artists.
So much of the art and science of this stuff is passed down as an oral tradition, as you know. I felt almost despondent that it was being lost forever as most first class commercial recording studios were being wiped off the face of the earth, and music was getting worse and worse.
I don’t think there’s anyone who is doing more to preserve all of this important knowledge than you. It is truly GOLD. I’m filled with gratitude for that. Please keep up the GREAT work.

I've been a huge fan of his work since hearing Blood Sugar Sex Magik in 1991 and then I noticed his name was on everything of significance, back to back classic records. His work is just so extensive as well as being universally recognised as being outstanding.... yet not one photo or video interview in all that time did I see!

But listening to the stories, the details, without delving too much into "technical" details, but with such relaxed tones, stories of studio studies, production choices behind mixes, reverbs, guitar racks, they're priceless capsules of music culture. I expect a series, a movie, a content put on support that will remain for future generations. You're doing quality work, which I, like most of us followers, believe is unfindable online. It comes naturally to you, and to me as a viewer, it feels like I'm in the room with you chatting. Thank you.

I got to meet Brendan in Austin TX at SXSW.
The bands on our little tour coming from Los Angeles were good bands.
I was the sound guy on the tour.
First time I ever did sound outside in a big space and It was great because there were no stupid resonance/feedback problems.
Anything I wanted to do on the console, the program at the mix position would just react as expected... so, it was easy and fun.
Brendan had The Band and myself at his table upstairs on the patio for the 57 Records party.
Interesting experience to be at "The Table" where it seemed everyone was looking.
Good party, good tour, good stories. Then back to Los Angeles to keep working in studios for me.
My music life was cool and interesting and I had my time around some very good people including Mr O'Brien. (Briefly)
    Lovely Interview Rick. Thank You!!

I’m so glad you brought Dogman into the conversation. By doing so, you gave King’s X a little more of the credit and recognition that they deserve. But this whole interview made me realize that Brendan produced like 90-95% of the records that I loved in the 90’s. Which is amazing. So kudos to you Rick. You hit the jackpot with this interview. King's X has been my favorite band for over 30 years, and Dogman is my favorite album by Dug, Ty and Jerry. Why that album didn't explode in popularity after its release in 1994 still boggles my mind. It's still in my top five albums of all-time and should have given King's X massive popularity.

King's had the prime time set (first band with lights on the first night of the weekend)
After a stellar set that was seen by millions....
Ty said they were selling 300 hundred or so a week
DOGMAN was always the CD you found at the resale shop.

@@davedecker1725 I watched that interview with Ty. When you think about it, as to why they never went to the stratosphere in terms of popularity and Dogman not selling a gazillion copies. You can think about 10 or more different reasons those things never happened. Bad management, the Christian stigma they had at the time, their music being way ahead of their time etc. But I think it was that the stars weren't aligned for them. They had everything. The music. Brendan taking their sound to a whole new level, the band's chemistry etc. But still. It didn't happen. And when you listen to an album like Dogman that still sounds as fresh as it was released 30 years ago, the whole situation defies any logic. Completely mind boggling.

@@ultrasuede7757Kings X were an awesome band BUT at the time the Christian Rock connection was a turn off for a lot of people.

    • @lanemeyer663
      @lanemeyer663 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

Brendan shouldn't be so down on himself over Dogman's lack of commercial success. The band were a hard sell to the masses. They were a band of overt Christians (though not marketed as a Christian band, their early lyrics definitely identify them as such), with one member (Doug) beginning to express doubts with his faith around this time. "Pillow" from this album conveys this pretty strongly. So, much of their original fan base began to abandon them, while they were still seen as "that Christian band" by potential new fans.
But none of the above changes that fact that Dogman is a classic album (it's in my top 20 albums of all-time), and is loved by so many serious music fans. It got me through a very dark time in my life, and was my best friend for several months. It is still one of the most raw, painful, honest albums I have ever heard.

Same with how he minimized but still kept all of DaveA’s drumming on Daughter (by putting a small kit in the auxiliary room)…. those are masterclass examples and strokes of genius that made those songs and Vs and Vitalogy the band’s best-ever-studio-work.

I feel bad that I never knew the name of the person who helped to create, produce and engineer some of the most important music in my entire life. And like so many, it was music that shaped a lot of my world view through its influence on me over time. So thank you Rick for yet another amazing interview and thank you Mr O'Brien for, well, all the music.

In the mid-80s, I played in a band in Atlanta. GA State University had a "music business" program for students who wanted to go into the music business. One year, they did a project where they selected local bands to provide songs for an LP. We were one of those bands. The album ("Off the Tracks") was engineered and produced by Brendan - he was just making the transition from local musician to respected producer, and it really sounds fantastic.

To clarify a couple things: 1) The album was recorded at Studio One in 1986, and 2) Brendan was the co-engineer (along with Donal Jones), not producer. Considering the year, and that it was recorded at Studio One, I'd say he was also a little further along in his career.

    I loved this interview! Bravo!
Such a blessing to witness Brendan O'Brian's easy going social manner, get an insight to his professionalism, hear his positive attitude toward everything & everyone; his general sincerity, plus his intelligent caution to detail... I feel he down plays his influence as a producer. It takes an experienced musical/instrumental- genius/virtuoso, to make the most of the great ideas & moments a band has, plus reorganising sections to create more effective song shapes. Also an emotionally-intelligent, assertive-wit to freely discuss ego-challenging changes; like culling the less mature, or daft ideas some artists cling to, while exploiting the good, and experimenting with sounds within reason. Like a QC filter of musical ideas, execution, experimentation and organisation.
Sounded like he was an absolute master of the mixing console (among so many things), however his nonchalant 'Avoidance' of equipment details, channel paths, and his absolute mastery of the bottom-end was as frustrating as it was understandable.
He dropped 1 morsel of a hint, a tiny clue as to how he always got such an incredibly fat kick sound.
    Thank You

Rick, thank you so much for this interview! Being an Atlanta native, hearing from Brendan, this was a walk through musical history. His footprint in music, especially through the 90’s can’t be denied. And I’m so happy you all talked about Korn. They are the reason I picked up guitar, and Issues is one of my favorite records. There’s so much more I would love to hear about the making of that Album from him. I’m glad you all touched on it though!

So great to hear Brendan give Dave Abbruzzese his flowers. Dave did a fantastic job on “Vs” and “Vitology”… he really was an “engine”, as Brendan said. His drumming in those records is sensational.

It was also interesting to hear him talk about how “busy” Dave played and how he had so many cymbals. That’s one of the reasons Ed fired him. Also regarding his snare… pretty sure Dave always uses a 7x13” snare, not a piccolo.

It doesn’t even matter if I’ve never even heard of the person before. I find it all so interesting listening to all aspects of how the music is put together. I know by your expression that you also love to hear the what, when, and how these groups of people came together to bring such beauty to our ears. I saw a video of a show they did about 10 or 15 years ago and thought to myself, "This is a studio band". I was incredibly disappointed with the performance. Maybe they were just having a bad night? Maybe it took them 30 years to iron out the kinks in their gigging performance? Their albums are all masterpeices but I could see how based on what I saw of them on stage how people would be left soured on them. Somebody elucidate here... I really want to know more.

Thanks so much for this video/interview, Rick and Brendan. I've adored this man's work for decades now. So awesome to hear his stories.
I know PJ was already massive when Brendan started working with them, but I still think Brendan was a big part of their long-term success. If every album sounded like Ten I think people would have got bored with the sound, no matter how great those songs were. Brendan captured the essences of the band so, as the band changed, the sound changed and Brendan made sure us fans got to hear the best these bands could do. I never get tired of listening to Brendan's PJ and STP albums, this guy found a way to catch lightning in a bottle, and he could do it every time.
