  • I spend 24 hours with a used Model 3 Long Range. This car is "old" - late 2020 with the old interior and nearly 50,000 miles on the clock. That makes it cheap - plenty of examples on Autotrader.
    So what do you get for the money? Is a used Tesla Model 3 the fastest you can buy for the money?

    The "Service Aberdeen" preset seems to spend a lot of time flat back.
    Not sure if it's lots of changing cabin filters or people putting the seat back at chargers.
    Was probably most annoying thing about the loaner I got.
    Later Model 3s have issues with the power boot opener so there are advantages to manual. Highland have motors each side.
    Early Model 3s don't have wireless phone charging, but there are loads of third party wireless adapters.
    It's possible to select low regen on early cars - that's normal for winter to reduce brake corrosion. Don't think that's possible on Y, it's not possible on heat pump 3s.
    Absolute best model 3 is the 2019 P- which is an M3P with track mode but without the lowered suspension and improved brakes on standard 18" wheels. (Top speed limited to same as an M3LR)

      “GBC” and “MCM”?

    • @djtaylorutube
      @djtaylorutube 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not much point in that. The second hand market at the Facebook pricing isn't going to get an EV worth using for the type of challenge that people seem hell bent on trying to prove.
      However, try this one on an old FB price car. Drive 80 miles every single day for a year. At the end of the year compare time inconvenience for refuelling and "fuel" cost.
      Of course, no need to actually do this, it can be worked out in a few minutes on paper.
      ICE gets spanked. This better represents daily usage, not longer roadtrips given that 99% of journeys are less than 100 miles. The average being around 20 miles.
      Another challenge? Buy a 20k car and compare running costs for 3 following years for 10,000 miles each year. I'd buy a 2017(ish) Model S with free supercharging. 😅 £0 I win by default before starting.
      Tomorrow, I'll be driving from East Midlands to South London, no need to charge enroute and because it's convenient, my sister's neighbour has a level 2 charge point so I'll just charge up again on my sister's drive. No inconvenience. My diesel and petrol cars will stay at home as usual.
      You see, it doesn't really matter what we as individuals choose, we're all capable of choosing what works for us.

    • @anthony208
      @anthony208 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@djtaylorutube I have no axe to grind either way for EV or ICE, but the examples you use in your justification seem a little weak for the general Tesla or other EV owners. Please correct me if I’m wrong but free charging is no longer available for most Tesla owners? And using your sister’s neighbour’s charger maybe fortuitous for you but obviously is a none starter for everyone else? There would be slim pickings currently in second hand market for the model S that you suggest below £20k, ignoring any issues regarding battery life/ warranty, although obviously ICE vehicles have their own issues. If you aren’t fussed about buying a new or nearly new, running an older ICE vehicle would be significantly cheaper than either newer EV or ICE, just saying. Clearly as you mention EV and ICE vehicles can both work, depending on your personal situation/circumstances.

    • @djtaylorutube
      @djtaylorutube 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@anthony208 I'm not trying to justify anything, just illustrating that there are pros and cons to everything. It seems that a certain fraternity (and we all likely know which ones) are just keen on doing a single use case to prove a point when in fact 99% of journeys are less than 100 miles and the majority around 20 miles where EV's can work well, particularly where home charging is available.
      It's generally accepted that on a road trip, public charging can be less convenient though doesn't have to be, certainly not a typical Tesla experience.
      In my trip to London, the use of the neighbours charger didn't happen because she had a tethered cable which would have meant her moving her car and me parking on her drive and I didn't need to do that. In the end the trip was a loo stop at Oxford for 9 mins, car charged at the same time because it could and then to South London. I then used the Croydon supercharger for 20 mins because I had to go into Croydon anyway and this was the only "inconveniece". I could have just plugged into my sisters electric but didn't bother. On the return trip, stopped at Warwick for loo and coffees, car charged during that stop which was 16 mins total. No drama.
      Likewise, I don't care what people drive, i've nothing to prove and what anyone else drives doesn't change my day. Everyone can figure out for themselves what works best for their situation and choose that.
      What I will provide is what my experience is like and if asked and given the circumstances, my answer may very well be to that person "stick with ICE, an EV won't work for you at this time" but assuming that because someone can race to the end of the country therefore EV=fail is ridiculous. Someone posted the other day "an EV fails in just about every scenario" which is rather odd since, an EV wins in just about every scenario OTHER than the determined to drive non stop long distance.
      If the original poster of this thread wants a race, i'll say "fine, race me to Italy next May" when I do that trip but it doesn't bother me what the outcome is, I already know what to expect, I know where i'm stopping and why and for how long. If someone else wants to force themselves to drive non stop for hours on end just to prove that they didn't have to stop for 15 mins somewhere, "crack on" as it wouldn't change my style whether in ICE or EV, that's all. Calais to Switzerland for us was two, thirty minute stops which were combined with breakfast and lunch. Had I driven my diesel or petrol it would have been... two, thirty minute stops for breakfast and lunch. *bemused*
      On the free supercharger use, yes absolutely right, there are a few but some very nice cars with 20 to 30k miles on them with free supercharging for around £20 to £30k. Again, everything has to be considered but it's possible and yes, I still have other old cars too so the bangernomics discussion is very well understood, i've done the same figures myself.
      I didn't buy our car with the notion of being cheaper to run than our old cars, long since paid for, nor to save the planet or whatever.
      Key reasons were: highest rated in class for EuroNCAP test, bigger car which can take 6'2" passengers in the rear with good comfort, luggage space, tow a large trailer (short distances when I have to), because i'm a techie and I like techie stuff and finally...point in life where I can indulge myself because I want to.
      That's pretty much it.

      Oh you mean Geoff Buys Cars and The Macmaster?
      Well in any speed test a diesel will win if the driver refuses to take any rest breaks.

    For me all this point and squirt has got rather boring really whereas a small classic car I had for many years used to actually put a smile on my face every time I drove it.
    Not a lot of power but a slick manual gearbox, light manual steering that told you what was happening, great pedal setup to heal and tow as well as good suspension so it handled very well.
    My 4wd came with paddles for shifting manually, which I thought was cool at the time, and I used them once. Meh.

The whole concept of a car are the dials & switches, the layout all the controls to hand that you learn within a few minutes of getting the vehicle. If you are looking at a TV screen every time you want to change any aspect of your journey its worse than using a mobile & more dangerous. As for the acceleration its useless in the real world, just a quick way to lose your license & remove the tread from your tyres. I just can’t bring myself to sit on a seat that is directly above a large battery chemical reaction taking place.
    Regarding charging, it’s ok if you have a home charger but would I trust any public chargers and pay the prices out there, for me I don’t think so I will stick with Internal Combustion Engine technology. If there is a fire at least the fire brigade can put out a petrol or diesel fire but if an electric cars traction battery made of lithium ion chemistry the fire brigade has no answer and so it just must burn out but even then when the original fire started the traction battery pack can reignite days or weeks later. I don’t think swapping the stalks for buttons is a big issue. There’s plenty of cars with controls in different places - remap your muscle memory and you’re away. Personally I would leave the stalks alone, but it’s not a reason not to buy one

    Teslas are alright I own a model Y LR, and a 981 cayman GTS. I'm on a twisty road the cayman always wins for enjoyment hands down. The model Y as I describe it, is an ugly car that does many things well (such as space for family compared to similar sized cars), but lets not kid ourselves it's a boring car, and it's not anyones dream car.

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dream car? No. I wanted a Tesla when I first saw the Model S. but that isn’t appropriate for my needs so I got a Y. Why do you think it’s boring? Compared to a Cayman? Sure, but it’s a family car. Compared to almost every other family car…?

      @@justgetatesla I agree with you for a family car it does the job. Which is why I bought it. I wanted a e63 wagon, or a RS6 but for my wife's needs and cost of ownership it made sense. I still think it's a boring car though, and I own one!

    EVs without infrastructure are junk.
    Hybrids are the best short term answer until batteries and infrastructure catch up.The Steam engine went extinct in the 40s and diesel electric locomotives have been their replacement since them. Thats a hybrid Today, Edison Motors has a succesful hybrid logging truck that beats the Tesla in both power and fuel economy and most importantly, and it is lighter than the standard trans truck NRA. No range anxiety.
    Get it straight .. The infrastructure TODAY CAN NOT support EVs but hybrids can and are doing it with no infrastructure change and BETTER FUEL ECONOMY WITH PROVE TECHNOLOGY ..

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I assume you're American by the "steam extinct in the 40s" comment? Entirely agree that EVs need infrastructure, and building it is as big a challenge as it was pushing out filling stations everywhere for the internal combustion engine.
      In the Uk at least the infrastructure today can largely support the number of EVs today. But won't be able to do tomorrow without investment.

    Ever wonder why you can’t get insurance on a Tesla? This video shows you why, 4 second 0-60 times by poorly trained drivers, on the Kings highway, equals lots of risk and ridiculous insurance premiums or none at all.

    The speed thing is a gimmick. That is all electric cars are good for. They are not as convenient as diesel, more expensive to insure, more tyre wear and then there is the manufacturing process of the batteries, which in many peoples eyes doesn't exist. They don't look at the toxins released when one of these things goes on fire, which never ever happens either. I do enjoy your blind optimism. I watch your videos to get both sides of the story on electric cars. Has it ever crossed your mind this technology is being introduced for another reason?

      Have you ever had one? The people you see with electric cars, Im sure had had plenty of diesel and petrol cars before.... I dont think for the moment anyone is being forced to buy them. The environment thing has long been debunked. You buy/drive whatever you want :)

      My model 3 is a lot more convenient than a diesel. I’ve just proven that again with a 600 mile drive down the length of the country. Result: It took 15 minutes longer than a diesel. But for every other day of the week, I recharge at home, and never have to suffer any time at the petrol station.
      Toxins released with any car fire are going to be pretty awful, regardless of fuel type.
      As for battery manufacturing process. Please show me. Before you say the words “cobalt” and “child labour”, please note there’s no cobalt in LFP batteries, but there’s plenty used in oil refineries.
