    It's killing me that I missed this trip due to my schedule, but I'm so happy for you guys. Maybe next year we can all collab in Italy with some Grappa.

    Randy is a favorite of mine and the thing he nails time and again is the reason we love our gear which is to enjoy our music and movies first and foremost. It's easy to get lost in the value of our equipment and the nuances of it's performance when we are just living in the moment and having fun. Thanks to you both for making this video. Looking forward to the future of our hobby.

      It’s so true about the music, we all at some point start listening to the hardware… tweaking and buying new kit. Even when there is no real need.
      A true story…. In my local audio shop ( they are a chain in the uk and mostly sell affordable audio and visual with the odd bit of higher end kit).
      The deputy manager used his staff discount well, upgrading when he felt it was ok to do so. A genuine music lover but then he got into the “it’s all wrong” he stopped hearing the tunes and started picking apart his system. Funniest thing of all he was hiding most of it from his wife. In all fairness it was only the loudspeakers he had trouble hiding but he got away with it saying they were cheaper or a trade in etc.
      he would unpack the new kit in work then install it when he could and when his wife was out.
      Long story short… he wasted £1000’s. It come to a head when he had a meltdown over a pair of very expensive headphones not sounding that much better than his other 5 pairs.. and a subwoofer that was installed under a coffee table . He measured (bearing in mind his wife is mostly in the dark. He got the depth wrong and this new relatively pricey ‘upgrade’ didn’t fit underneath this table.
      He panicked and found some screws and very poorly tried to add 2 inches to the height of a the table before his poor wife got in. She noticed, he confessed.
      Happy ending though.. he pulled himself together and sold a load of stuff. He basically started again , with the music and how much he had missed this.
      I recently replaced my hifi some. Of it was 30 odd years old. It was like lifting a veil … all my older recordings and cds come back out and the old magic started.
      Love the interview and I’m new to your channel via Randy!
      Keep it up sir 😊

    Absolutely, TH-cam in and of itself, no matter the content is super hard! I'm trying to start a "faceless" channel myself and I finally edited my first video yesterday. It is a 2 minute 10 second video and it took me 2.5 hours just for that and it is still trash, but it is what it is. (I'm learning everything on my own because I can't get any help). I used to be a audio print journalist and while that was some work it was nothing compared to TH-cam. It is so hard, I may decide that I don't want to launch my channel, because just that part is a whole other thing I don't know and sounds very difficult. (I'm not even looking for monetization or even subscribers). I'm supposed to just do it for kicks.
    I admire anybody who can do TH-cam. Randy's level is a whole other thing!

      It's fun but also much tougher than it looks in terms of work... Plus you have to deal with criticism well. You won't be an expert from the start, so you have to weather the storm and be able to push forward.
      A faceless channel may be easier to start, but it also runs the risk of being drowned out by others doing the same thing nowadays because it's easier.
      I would recommend taking the harder path and finding a niche you enjoy regardless of the metrics. That's what I did and it's resonated with the specific crowd I targeted and value. It's often more important WHO watches and WHY versus the mass numbers.

    • @ericelliott227
      @ericelliott227 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AudiophileJunkie I know I won't be an expert for at least two years, maybe more. It's even tougher when one doesn't even know how to edit videos as well. My channel is going to be my personal niche, which happens to be about music. (Otherwise I would not have even considered it. I can't do what I don't know). I'm basically going to be showing my music collection and talking about music in many of it's aspects. I used to work in radio as well and was deep in the local live music scene in many roles. I am also going to be doing care and maintenance videos, etc. I have a lot of background in that. My mission is to get folks to get back to listening to their music, maybe even discover new music. I don't mind "constructive critique", I need that, but some of my videos will not have a comments section because it can create confusion. Since my content will mostly be subjective (except the science stuff), I won't worry about comments in that subjective stuff.
      I was an audio journalist for 4 years from 2013 to 2017 (by force) doing the same work you and others do and was fairly successful at it, not in pay, it was all volunteer, but I had my own magazine and had about 300 subs without marketing. (I don't do marketing, I prefer the organic approach). I never got "industry discounts or anything like that, but the best thing was meeting a few known folks in the industry, a couple of which became pals and best of all was meeting some readers at shows and hearing them thank me for my work and helping them navigate, there is nothing more wonderfully humbling than that!
      It must be faceless due to security concerns and to me cameras are like guns, one doesn't point such things at others. I won't even film someone without expressed permission and certainly will never stand or sit in front of a camera myself! (I won't even do selfies with a phone).
      If I am successful at launching I don't know how long my channel will be up. I set a low bar: I keep it up for 4 months and if I get 7 or more views per video I will keep going. Less than that, I take the channel down as it is not worth the work. I will also likely put up one to two videos per month (my goal is two) as I have a full-time job and am not looking to quit it for You Tube as I have zero interest in monetizing out side of an occasional affiliate link or something later on. I won't even be begging for subs or likes or marketing my channel. I want it organic. I also could care less about all the other metrics as I don't understand them anyway.

    Great segment!!! There is far too much focus in the hobby on how much components, cables, speakers, etc, cost. There is also too much focus on bling and other aspects that have nothing to do with the music itself, which is the entire point of hobby.

    I have to disagree with cheap audio man. At one point, he repeats the common shibboleth that “ It’s really all about the music” And that’s what brings files together or into the hobby.
    That’s clearly not the case. The vast majority of music lovers are not audiophiles. We are a very niche hobby. What brings us together is not simply a love of music, but more specifically and enthusiasm for audio gear, and good sound. Now, of course, we use our gear for listening to music. But the reason he Started his channel is clearly his own enthusiasm about audio gear, catering to an audience interested in audio gear. There is a course nothing wrong with that at all. Thing that just irks me a little bit is that the repetition of this idea “it’s all about the music“ really sidesteps the salient aspect of our hobby. The idea that one should be “all about the music” has been used as a sort of purity test among audio files for many years, and when one is signing virtue for oneself and some advice for another audio file who is reported to be “too much about the equipment.”

    • @AudiophileJunkie
      @AudiophileJunkie  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He's just a supplier of demand. The reality is that you have to focus on gear and reviews (not music) to make a living covering this hobby. I know I've done videos with live music instead of gear, and they get a fraction of the views (other than U2 at the Sphere where it was about more than just music).
      You're right that most music lovers aren't audiophiles. These are toys that many prioritize over the music itself. People can debate whether it's good or bad, but it doesn't hurt to sometimes remind audiophiles about the importance of the actual content being played on our toys...I don't think Randy was excluding himself in that sentiment and suggestion.

    • @QuintEssential-sz2wn
      @QuintEssential-sz2wn 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AudiophileJunkie To be more clear, I don't think Randy is wrong to mention the role of music in the hobby. It's just a bit of a pet peeve since it's so often been used by audiophile to shame other audiophiles. Also, and again I"m not for a second undermining Randy's intentions in what he said...he's a good dude...but I also don't think people need to be constantly reminded "it's about the music." I don't really need to be told by someone else what I need to be focusing on. We are all in different states, maybe in "gear hunting mode" for an upgrade, maybe we have finished our system and now concentrating more on the music, as well as any spectrum one may cite. But none of those are "wrong" and I really don't think people need to be reminded of priorities: we all have our own priorities, at any point in time.

    • @AudiophileJunkie
      @AudiophileJunkie  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I understand, but I wouldn't get too triggered by it. As TH-camrs, it's tough to talk to a broad audience and hit the mark for everyone. I try to avoid lecturing, but many people do look for advice and counsel based on our experiences. I don't think Randy was lecturing in the traditional sense either. It was more based on the context of what we discussed the night before off camera and the immediate takeaways we enjoyed just talking about everything EXCEPT gear. Thus, it was a more applicable comment than just a "lecture" out of the blue.

      I’ll knock on Randy all day. He’s doing his followers a disservice by shaming others for wanting better gear! There are some very fine companies with high value for the money. Going cheap is a beautiful thing, but most of his followers have never experienced a fraction of what could be approved upon in audio. Randy is a joke and it’s clear you’re trying to scrap the bottom for some of his followers as he’s kicking most peoples butt when it comes to subscribers.
