- This ISN'T some hard hitting deep interview with Tom Martin of The Absolute Sound. Rather...it's a casual introduction to show you guys a sample of what a great, fun guy Tom is...on top of being one of the most influential and needle-moving audiophiles in our hobby.
I'll likely have more with Tom in the near future, but thought this introduction would be an ideal start for both those that don't know him and those who think they do.

Audiophiles are incredibly interesting consumers. The amazing amount of money they will spend on supposedly sonically superior lps for instance, is more shocking to me than if someone got on the phone and ordered up 5,000 scissors. They will need more scissors in time, that bolt where the blades intersect will become loose, but no one will ever need 5,000 scissors in their lifetime; just like no one will ever sit down & enjoy playing 5,000 lps in their lifetime. In both instances their brain told them that it's a good idea to do. And they did it. Thinking it's a good idea to do stuff like that is what makes the high end industry keep turning.
After the Mofi controversy hit, the guy that helped expose it, or publicize it, did a TH-cam video where they talked to Mofi employees. They said their DSD recorder was capable of sampling over 100 million times per second. Yet some audiophiles didn't care. It wasn't analog. They were pis*ed off at that, yet when someone puts a $40,000 price on a speaker, they don't find any fault with that. Isn't stuff like that what they should really be cussing about? Especially after they hand over the money, and a few hours later realize what they just did.
I'll have to hand it to you for the most unique comment in awhile. I never thought I'd hear an analogy of vinyl record collections to 5000 scissors 🤠
