You should probably talk about films around that era. not only were Disney trying to emulate the success of Pirates but they seemed to be trying to replicate other movies like Transformers.
I remember seeing the trailer for that in the theater and yelling, "OF MARS!" at the end. What's the point of giving your movie the most whitebread name imaginable and LEAVING OUT THE PART ABOUT MARS?!
@onbearfeet It just makes the film sound so much less interesting. It's like making a film about Lawrence of Arabia, but you leave out the "of Arabia" part. Who would be impressed with that? What's meant to draw in the audience if the name of your film sounds so dull?
So this movie was already failing when my dad and I decided to go see it. It was… good. Like… real good lol. We both loved it! I was so disappointed how audiences had acted towards it. My boyfriend at the time had read the books and saw the film. He said it was somewhat faithful and he was fine with it. As someone who never read the books, my dad and I loved it. Sad it failed so badly. Now… Prince of Persia??? Garbage trash fire. Way to take a really beautiful captivating fairytale and turn it into something so bullshit I could seriously barely recognize the end product. Wtf??? The game had this PERFECT story. The first game anyways.. (the sequel kinda shit alllll over the first game). But the first game was so perfect, they’d only need to FUCKING ADAPT IT. Why in the absolute fuck would they change SOOOO MUCH!?!?!????!!! The princess? wtf??? She was so fucking bland and just this white chick with a British accent???? WTF?!?! In game shes this beautiful slave who breaks free and ends up having this truly earned romance with our prince. Then at the end the Prince is telling her the story of his adventure so they could stop it from happening. That’s perfect! She doesn’t remember her adventures with him but she hears all about it and I believe ends up feeling for the Prince again even though they didn’t have that same journey.

I haven't watched it since and am afraid to because, honestly, the editing does feel pretty jarring from the few clips you've showed and I don't really remember the plot all that much, but this movie definitely made kid-me very happy

This movie completely ignored the original plot. Sands of time is a critically acclaimed game and is easily one of the best games made by Ubisoft. Had the makers stuck with the original plot, the movie would have done well and would have given Disney the opportunity to make additional sequels with Warrior Within and Two Thrones.
I suspect they wouldn't have gone into R rated territory with The Warrior Within and Two Thrones, if we're talking about faithfulness to the source. That said, I agree, Sands of Time is *right there* and it's great. Then again, Disney also completely failed to do the smart thing and adapt the Thrawn trilogy over in Star Wars. Same. Sure, it wasn’t 100% a translation of Sands of Time’s story, but in terms of accuracy to the material, it was way ahead of video game films of its time.
Just discovered your channel and the series. It’s a lot of fun. Looking forward to what you’ll do next. I’m especially fond of the parts where you give context about the history of the movie’s release. Things like strikes or other movies competing with it! Well done.
So we're supposed to embrace the multicultural re-interpretation of every western story (Bridgerton, black Anne Boleyn, black little mermaid, etc) but also hate the slightest hint of white castings on fictional non-western worlds? 🤔

The only two things or should I say.. Characters I really appreciate in this film is Nizam and Amar. Ben Kingsley looked the part, acted it well and overall was just the best actor possible for the slimy manipulative villain in the film. And Alfred Molina was just a ton of fun to watch. The rest of it was boring, mummy returns type tripe that wasn’t all that enjoyable.
They should've cast Ben Kingsley as Jaffar in the live action Aladdin movie. He did so great in this role, and there are lots of similarities to both characters.
There's a toy store near me that still has the lego sets based off this movie, they've been sitting there since the movies release and have been put to the lowest sale point they can but still nobody's buying them.
Two things I cared about with this movie, one being Harry Gregson Williams' great score, and the other being the sound for when the sands of time are triggered. Gave my subwoofer a good workout.
Okay, overall I agree, but... Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider both -did- do well, honestly. They captured the vibes of their respective franchises, were dripping with 90s-cool energy, and actually merited sequels. There are far more apt, genuinely terrible videogame movies to point to, like Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead, Far Cry, or the countless Bloodrayne and Dungeon Siege movies.
What's funny is that I've seen all of Disney's failed next big thing movie's except for Prince of Persia....I'll probably forget about it in a week from now, I know that's what Disney wants me to do
I saw this movie in theatres as a kid, and I remember coming out of it feeling really underwhelmed, and thinking "huh I actually didn't really enjoy that movie. Is that a Thing that can happen?"
Gods, this movie is my guilty pleasure. I had the most massive crush on both Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton at that time, and ugh, I ate this up! Still love this movie
i'm from morocco , and a big fan of the prince of persia games , there isn't a person here that i know that knows this movie regardless of knowing the game or not that doesnt like it, sure looking at it now it suffers from 2008-2013 movie editing syndrome . i feel like if they made a second movie and gave it a chance it would've been great especially because warrior within is a much darker game so for the people who hated the giddy nature of the first one they d love the serious nature of the second one.
I didn't like it because it was a bad adaptation of the source material. The game Sands of Time. Also because of the other reason you mentioned. But they went so much away from the core story of the game which is sad. I love the time trilogy. You should play the game it's a bit outdated by today's standards but it is a good 2000s gaming classic
I just watched it again after several years. It's an OK action flick, the kind of thing you'd like to watch as a repeat again every 5 years. Yet not as memorable as an actual genre classic.
The choices made in this movie certainly don't age well, and Jake Gyllenhaal was badly miscast - not only because he's not in any way Middle-Eastern looking, but he's literally the 'only' American actor between British actors/actresses there. There was even an interview about how he had to fake British accent just to match with the rest of the cast.
I really never understood the forced British accents in fantasy movies...even for movies such as Troy which is half fantasy or like 300 which is purely (un)historical fantasy. I mean miscasting is bad enough but then that forced accent is ridiculous.
A lot of people who criticize the casting because of Jake's ethnicity don't really understand the various ethnicities in the area, especially in modern Persia. He looks fine.
@@beanwithbaconmegarocket He even looks nearly exactly the same as the prince from the game trilogy. If there is any complaint to be had, it should be towards Ubisoft, long before the movie was made. The movie creators were actually faithful to the source material in the casting choice.
@@kukuc96 People should look at the ruling parties and wealthy classes in modern day Iran. As a whole they are whiter than many Western nations, including the United States.
I remember enjoying the movie as a kid and rewatched it about a year ago - it still was enjoyable, though not fantastic. I definitely see where someone is coming from for not enjoying it - some ofthe editing was questionable, especially when it comes to the action scenes. From what I can remember, the games didn't have a lot of slower moments either - though the movie could have used more.
I always find Jerry Bruckheimer’s movies he’s involved with interesting, even the terrible movies he’s produced like Kangaroo Jack, Pearl Harbor, and G-Force, Gemini Man, & The Lone Ranger there’s something fascinating about them you can’t turn away from. And at least you remember them unlike Disney’s Wish for better or worse.
There were also a lot of political overtones that were annoying. Thinly veiled criticism of George Bush and the "war for oil." Not that I didn't hate that war but hacky criticism in a blockbuster film is annoying. Jake G looks fine, ethnically, for this role btw. His facial features are a bit more European than a locals would be but his skin tone ia pretty close to Persia. Iran actually means "home of the Aryans" as a reference to Europeans and Persians having common steppe ancestors. Theyre similar peoples. Other groups in that area such as Arabs are much darker which is probably why you're confused
I was a 12 year old kid who just started getting addicted to video games when this movie came out( I'd say the perfect target audience, no?) and it completely floored me. I thought about it for days. Sure, in retrospect it's not very good, but it hit the mark where it needed to. According to imdb, the box office profits weren't even that bad. It's just that crazy , unexplained budget that was the main problem.
I loved this movie, had it on dvd and would watch in most rainy days when the tv stoped working I also would put it on every time someone older showed up to watch something since it was the most “adult” movie I owned
i loved this movie and i don't get why people don't like it, and this movie would not work without Jake Gyllenhaal's charisma, I am glad they didn't cast some random middle eastern dude, the movie would have done much worse if they did
You failed to consider this: that 14 year old me LOVED this movie. The main actress is one of the most beautiful women in the world, and I was very invested in the character drama as it really felt like the brothers loved each other and their father. And the No-consequences but Yes-character-growth ending made me feel happy. That being said, I’m not disagreeing with anything you said about the editing
You do realize Persia isn't just a bunch of brown people, right? Like I see this same thing pop up a lot when it comes to Egypt too. The Persian empire literally became the Greek empire that we know of under Alexander the Great. It wasn't just a bunch of brown people. That's like people getting mad when they make Cleopatra white: she was literally descended from one of Alexander's Greek generals!
Man, Alfred Molina's character has to be the only thing I truly remember from this movie. Well, that and the fact that despite it being called "The Sands of Time" the darn things only show up twice in the movie. A lot of squandered potential for what was one of the main mechanics in the game. Imagine if Mario had only jumped twice in his movie. This film was such a disappointment for me. I don't hate it, but I find it so forgettable.
When I was a kid, my cousin and I absolutely loved the prince of persia games (especially the two thrones, we played that game religiously) so when I was eleven and saw this movie for the first time I absolutely loved it Then I grew up and saw the issues it has and saw its issues and I'm so disappointed to see how it all turned out. The movies you've covered has so much potential, but hollywood happened
I honestly liked this one. It wasn't perfect, but it was good enough to turn my brain off for. Plus, the main lady was attractive; that was enough for me
There’s a massive hoodoo over video game films and I’m not sure why. They have a built in audience, for a start. But they also have an established cinematic world. It should be incredibly straightforward. But for some reason producers and directors decide to complete forget that and try to create something else. I can only assume they’ve never played video games or are trying to impress their children or something. Hopefully we’re far enough into the 21st century that people making films now actually played the games and have a love for them when they’re recreating them as films. I hold out a very shallow hope, but I suppose it’s possible
I loved this movie and I was so sad it never had a sequel because if I remember correctly, there was a monster that goes after the prince for messing with time. Great sequel material.
Yeah, the story of the sequel game Warrior Within is a lot more substantial, and I think it would have been more adaptable to movie than Sands of Time. So I completely undestand that they departed heavily from the story of the first part (which is quite basic in the game).
I wonder how much of an impact Assassin's Creed had. By 2010, Prince of Persia was considered old hat. Gamers had collectively moved beyond the franchise. At least the younger ones, who this movie needed to capture.
As a LEGO fan I know all of these forgotten failures. Don’t misunderstand me, I haven’t actually watched them. But if there’s one certainty it is if there’s a Disney movie flop (Prince of Persia, The Lone Ranger, Tron Legacy, Hocus Pocus) then LEGO will make some banger sets based on them.
Pirates of the Caribean had many elements in its history, tone, visuals and characters (at least you know who) that make very unique to other pirates films, that was why it was a big sucess. Many of this failed next big thing like John Carter and the Sorcerer´s apprentice were very standard entries of their genres, why is the reason the were never able to grasp a big audience

I liked this movie...
U and me both, loved the casting as well
Not sure if this is nostalgia goggles but I remember really liking it in junior high.
Me too. The plot makes no sense but aesthetically it looks great
Same
Yes! i'm happy you understand!
CoIoreds and com, mies ha. te. You.
A brilliant point!
Iranians and Persians are mostly white, they come from the European steps 3000 years ago, they went to middle east and created a mighty empire, banning slavery, being the first nation to do so.
Persian has a lot in common with english language and it has a lot of history.
we Love Americans and people in Europe, well those that arent woke piece of shits at least, People here thought that the actors were very spot on, my cousin has brown hair and blue eyes, Im white, and you should see the rest, despite being here 3000 years.
I loved this movie! It introduced me to jake gyllenhaal ❤
Yooo same!!
Prince of Persia gets even worse when you compare it to the games and realise how much more bland it comes out after the comparisonon
When I divorce this from its source material, I can enjoy this as a random tale from 1001 Arabian Nights.
Imagine if it did have a sequel but it was a crossover with Pirates of the Caribbean
That sounds like the worst collaboration idea ever
The only two things or should I say.. Characters I really appreciate in this film is Nizam and Amar.
Ben Kingsley looked the part, acted it well and overall was just the best actor possible for the slimy manipulative villain in the film.
And Alfred Molina was just a ton of fun to watch.
The rest of it was boring, mummy returns type tripe that wasn’t all that enjoyable.
They should've cast Ben Kingsley as Jaffar in the live action Aladdin movie. He did so great in this role, and there are lots of similarities to both characters.
I got to see the costumes in person lately. You can tell that the designers put a lot of love into them.
There's a toy store near me that still has the lego sets based off this movie, they've been sitting there since the movies release and have been put to the lowest sale point they can but still nobody's buying them.
Lmao
Two things I cared about with this movie, one being Harry Gregson Williams' great score, and the other being the sound for when the sands of time are triggered. Gave my subwoofer a good workout.
You know in the olden days these flops would be played forever on 80s HBO and TBS. Building a somewhat fan based.
This movie was not a flop to me, I was obsessed with it for a few months.
Literally everyone who enjoyed the game enjoyed the film
Okay, overall I agree, but... Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider both -did- do well, honestly. They captured the vibes of their respective franchises, were dripping with 90s-cool energy, and actually merited sequels. There are far more apt, genuinely terrible videogame movies to point to, like Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead, Far Cry, or the countless Bloodrayne and Dungeon Siege movies.
Uwe Boll did most of the bad /v/ movies iirc, and he was gaming the system. A real-life Bialystock and Blum.
I love this movie need to rewatch it soon
I can not wait for John Carter 😂 I actually really like that movie too so I’m curious to see what you have to say
They sabotaged the movie because they're buying Star Wars and doesn't want it to compete with each other
What's funny is that I've seen all of Disney's failed next big thing movie's except for Prince of Persia....I'll probably forget about it in a week from now, I know that's what Disney wants me to do
Good job at hitting a bit of a video topic goldmine! Love these vids! Make one on when they tried to remake wizard of oz world with James Franco
May 28th is my birthday. They were doing it for me ❤
I saw this movie in theatres as a kid, and I remember coming out of it feeling really underwhelmed, and thinking "huh I actually didn't really enjoy that movie. Is that a Thing that can happen?"
Gods, this movie is my guilty pleasure. I had the most massive crush on both Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton at that time, and ugh, I ate this up! Still love this movie
Great videos. Loving the series!
I actually enjoyed this movie. It came out right after my 15th birthday and I remember seeing it in theaters. I guess it's a guilty pleasure of mine.
Every film you do I have never seen but I heard of it.
I guess that's the point
Easily one of the best video game movie adaptations. The charm, witt, & aesthetics translated well to live action.
Lego sets were sick tho that's the only reason I remember Prince of Persia
i'm from morocco , and a big fan of the prince of persia games , there isn't a person here that i know that knows this movie regardless of knowing the game or not that doesnt like it, sure looking at it now it suffers from 2008-2013 movie editing syndrome . i feel like if they made a second movie and gave it a chance it would've been great especially because warrior within is a much darker game so for the people who hated the giddy nature of the first one they d love the serious nature of the second one.
As an avid Prince of Persia video game lover, the movie really came out on the wrong time and with the wrong studio in my opinion
Finally caught one of these early! But come on, stop teasing us with the snippets in the intro - I'm waiting from my boy from Marsss~
I would like to see more recent stuff in this series like Lightyear and Willow which were meant to be a Next Big Thing
The editing is like that one scene from the radioactive man episode of the Simpsons
Keep it up love your videos !!
I think you should make FAILURE TO LAUNCH - VIDEO GAME ADAPTIONS, gosh knows we got a lot of that
Great idea
I think I'm going to make a video on this in the future, is it alright if I give you a shoutout in the video?
@isenhartproductions2677 sorry for late message. Yes. Been busy
It’s a video game that has been around since the 80s, but I have never seen anyone play it.
Well I've played several entrées of that franchise. Dope video games overall.
It was hard to hate because they got the coolest leading man to pull it off.
I loved this movie, had it on dvd and would watch in most rainy days when the tv stoped working
I also would put it on every time someone older showed up to watch something since it was the most “adult” movie I owned
i loved this movie and i don't get why people don't like it, and this movie would not work without Jake Gyllenhaal's charisma, I am glad they didn't cast some random middle eastern dude, the movie would have done much worse if they did
You failed to consider this: that 14 year old me LOVED this movie.
When I was a kid, my cousin and I absolutely loved the prince of persia games (especially the two thrones, we played that game religiously) so when I was eleven and saw this movie for the first time I absolutely loved it
Then I grew up and saw the issues it has and saw its issues and I'm so disappointed to see how it all turned out. The movies you've covered has so much potential, but hollywood happened
I didn’t know Jake Gyllenhaal was Persian.
I honestly liked this one. It wasn't perfect, but it was good enough to turn my brain off for. Plus, the main lady was attractive; that was enough for me
Jake and his broke back were enough for me 🍆
There’s a massive hoodoo over video game films and I’m not sure why.
Wild they released this to compete w Shrek Ever After
One of my most favourite movie of all time. 😊
Should never have a follow up movie though.
Such a good series of videos Isenhart's doing.
I wonder how much of an impact Assassin's Creed had. By 2010, Prince of Persia was considered old hat. Gamers had collectively moved beyond the franchise. At least the younger ones, who this movie needed to capture.
I actually liked this movie...wish it actually had poc, but this is Hollywood after all.
This is such a cool Franchise! Keep up the great work!!
Reminder that Amazon Fallout isn't an example for a good video-game adaptation.
Prince of Persia Sands of Time had the best opening with Godsmack
Pirates of the Caribean had many elements in its history, tone, visuals and characters (at least you know who) that make very unique to other pirates films, that was why it was a big sucess.
Many of this failed next big thing like John Carter and the Sorcerer´s apprentice were very standard entries of their genres, why is the reason the were never able to grasp a big audience
The legos were dope at least.
I liked this movie, went twice to watch it and got the dvd. I have a habit of liking bad movies. I liked John Carter too😢.
They are not bad movies
Pretty much any live action film Disney made between the Pirates movies and the purchase of Marvel and Lucasfilm fits into this category.
Well, technically, Iranians are related to Europeans, about 3000 years back, but I still get some of the complaints, lol
I remember seeing this movie in theaters, and I enjoyed it (though I’ve never played the games, nor did I know it was based on games until a couple of years later).
Tbh John Carter, prince of Persia, eragon, treasure planet, Atlantis, gods of Egypt, all need to be revisited all great concepts of that have endless amount depth, just take your time, no release date until you actually have a concrete plan, no gimmicks take more realistic John wick approach, focus on character development and concepts that are prevalent to the film no comparison with other movies cause people expecting will be sky high but it’s sad to see
This movie was amazing when i saw it as a kid, sigh 😢always wished there woild be a sequel
If they start with selling merchandise for kids, I'd expect a movie for kids.
Hope to see sorcerers apprentice soon. Saw it with my mom in theaters as a kid and thought it was fun. Curious about its history
