I consider a whole bunch of games my ultimate favorite. Sands of time is one of those games. This was the point where I realized that Hollywood was amazing at making good stuff by all metrics expect that it's never more than just stuff. Sands of Time isn't particulary revolutionary, it had one gimmick that came by accident and open the flood gates to an amazing game mechanic. It was very good at it's own style of 3D platform. All the right elements were there and they were all elevated by the one thing that this adapatation missed, charm. The plot tool of the whole thing being the Prince telling the tale of what happened before he returned back in time, was such a great touch and it could've give this movie the whimsical feeling it missed. Everytime you die or pause the game the Prince would say something like ''Wait, that's not what happened.'' or ''Should I continue the story from here when you return?''. Imagine they did something similiar in this movie. Maybe then they would've gotten their new Pirates. Perfect example of something playing it as safe as it can. And it worked in a way. It's the type of movie that is ok enough to have a bunch of people growing up with it and just seeing it as a good movie, which is not that it isn't, which is worse. An actual bad movie would've been more interesting maybe.
I really appreciate how you guys actually make reference to the games that these movies are based on comparisons to show how the movie could have been better instead of just trashing on the movie itself.
I remember when Gyllenhaal was linked to play the main character in the "The Division" movie, which became a series, and then just disappeared entirely. That would have worked given how he did in that film recently when he went back to Afghanistan (The Covenant). I really liked the narrative in that first game, how New York has fallen apart because of a virus outbreak and the main threat isn't the illness like in other properties but is in fact the various people who have took the law into their own hands. The way the narrative in that game is told in "echo's", which were essentially a holographic audio log of what happened at that moment in the past using data from nearby cameras and microphones (the dates between what you saw got closer as the game went on so when you find the echo from the "villain" of the story, it turns out you only missed him by a couple of hours which added to the tension for me at least). I believe he was supposed to be that villain, Aaron Keener. The quintessential Division agent who, as time goes on became disillusioned with their mission and decided to go rouge and escape New York with a sample of the virus to start the cycle again somewhere else. Maybe I misunderstood the story at the time, but I really enjoyed that story and it would have made a great big budget action/espionage series, like how The Terminal List was for Chris Pratt (which is an amazing show, would 1000% recommend)
Congrats to Ben and Laurence, for consistently upping your game time and time again. 👏🏻 I was eating when "Here's The Thing..." hit... nearly choked on my dinner! 😂
