This is to the song Hell is for Children by Pat Benatar, one of the most important social awareness songs in history. The song, released in 1980 shined a light on the issue of child abuse. In this , Burch discusses his own experiences with child abuse at the hands of his father and how important the song was in his life. I was 12 when this came out and like you I went through this. Nothing ever was really said and nothing was ever done about it back in the 70s and I heard this and it gave me strength to keep going ahead. It was like an anthem for me
I saw Pat Benatar in concert around the time this song was released. I think Alexis mentioned how powerful Pat's voice is in this song. Pat Benatar was trained in opera, but took the rock 'n' roll path instead. She is a very petite, slender woman, and she puts everything into the vocals, and she would occasionally actually hyperventilate on stage and her band would have to fill in instrumentally while she recovered off-stage. As I have grown older, I have noticed that I now get chills every time I hear this song. Burch, I am sorry that you were a victim of abuse. This song was written for you and every child that has ever had to endure that.
Pat wrote this after reading some articles in the New York Times covering child abuse. She has performed it at every single concert since it was written. Very powerful song in a time when a lot of people weren't talking about this issue.

She and her husband (the guitar player) play this show at EVERY SINGLE SHOW as her way of bringing awareness to child abuse. Very powerful!
Props to her for this. This was a taboo subject at the time. Hit me hard at the time also, having a Dad who was extremely heavy handed. He has become my best friend. I have forgiven him many times, as that's how he was raised. I used that to mold my parenting style. I swore that I wouldn't be that parent.

I just saw Pat and Neil perform this song a week ago. They are still both amazing. This song had the entire audience on their feet. Outside. In 87 degree temperatures. Pat has said that she will continue to sing this song as long as the terror continues. I was fortunate to never suffer anything like what is painted here. But there were kids that I knew and went to school with who experienced a living hell at home. This song always makes me cry for them.
There were some radio stations which refused to play this song (& Pat was a HUGE star in that period of time). Some refused because they understood the meaning ....some refused simply based on the title. (Btw, Pat is FINALLY going into the rock hall of fame this year). The guitarist is her husband Neil Giraldo...they still perform today..they've been married for 43 years.
Back then, child abuse “didn’t happen”. It was considered discipline. The child, the spouse, the neighbors would see nothing wrong with it. This song gave a lot of children a voice. Pat Benatar was and still is such a champion for kids and women. And such a powerful and beautiful voice delivering the message.

This song not only gave Validation to those suffering from such actions it Opened the Eyes of millions who never really gave it any thought before. I was Lucky enough to have a wonderful Childhood and when I had the chance to see her Live in 1982 this song (Already one of my favorites) blew me away. She Plays this song at EVERY show she gives and is in her own words the most important message she ever tried to convey !
I remember being at a friend's house and having her mom come in and yell at us for listening to a song saying "hell is for children" . I remember getting up enough courage to address an adult and explain the song to her. She understood after. I never will forget that.
I was also ten years old in 1980 and yes it was something that was not talked about but sometimes happened daily it's good to know that times can change for the better when it comes from abuse to children thank you for your videos

I feel you, man. Only in my township back then the cops asked my mother and me what we did wrong. I'm glad time has changed this somewhat through our hellish experiences.
I have been a huge fan of Pat Benatar since 1979 - she is amazing. I finally got to see her in concert this year (little old New Zealand is so far away for artists to come to) and her vocals are still great. I shed a tear I was so happy to see her in concert. Neil Geraldo is her long time guitarist - and also long time husband. He is amazing as well. They tour under the name Pat Benatar and Neil Geraldo nowadays. Her autobiography is also a very good read..
Burch, I'm so sorry to hear you were abused as a child. I could see you relive the pain while watching this video. I'm glad you had that outlet.

Have been to 4 Pat Bennatar concerts. Best concert performer ever. Last one her voice cut out on the encore, so she gave everyone their money back and mailed us CD's. What a performer. Kudos.

I havent heard this song in years,i remember they stopped playing it on this on the radio and never knew why.I was born in 1967 so i was 12 or 13 when this came out.
Neil "Spyder" Giraldo. Amazing guitarist/songwriter. Pat and Neil have been married for over 40yrs.

Thanks for sharing this with us Burch. At the time this came out, I was a teen who had suffered emotional abuse (not physical), but the scars are still there, though faded over time. Very relatable to many of us who grew up back then.

My favorite Pat Benatar song. Only Ann Wilson is close to Pat's vocal range. In the 3rd grade, my second best friend was abused, and my aunt noticed his painful reaction from her touch. Evan and I talked about everything, but he never told me about his stepdad. I regret not being a better friend before Evan moved to another city. I still tear up at the ".. don't tell.." lyrics. Thanks guys.
I was 19 when I heard this song. It instantly became my favorite, describing my childhood to a T. I cry every time I hear it.

This hit hard. I also grew up being heavily abused during those times. I remember running away on multiple occasions and always wondered why there was no safe place kids could go. I remember loving Pat and this song and even played some of her songs in a band. The craziest thing is that besides the chorus, I never even knew the lyrics to this song or what it was about until watching reactions tonight.... Chills... I'm 55 and within seconds, I was instantly trasported backwards 47 years with all the emotions I had rushing back to me. Wow. I'll never look at this song the same again. I am so grateful for her writing this. If there are any new parents watching this, please understand that your actions can last a lifetime and although we may learn to push the pain away, it is never gone, and you can never take it back.

Such an impassioned song from two wonderful and real people in Pat and Neil Giraldo. Still out touring today and sounding amazing. Lucky to have seen them and the band 5-6 times over the years and they just bring you in for an amazing show.

You know, this was a moment of pause for me. It made me remember when music could sometimes be about *real* things. And, aye, as a note of understanding, Burch, I was abused too as a kid - beaten what felt like every day just for being a normal boy, in a severity that would have landed my father in trouble with the law now. And that was far more common than it ever should have been back in those days.
Dammit, I never expected to get teary eyed watching this channel. Probably shouldn't have come here right after watching Hacksaw Ridge :rueful chuckle:

My favorite Pat Benatar song. Halestorm does a great cover of this song. There is also a great cover of this from the fictitious band The Relentless from the movie American Satan.
It was the 1 song of hers that I could only listen to once in a great while, because of the intensity of the subject matter it's about. Probably one of the most significant songs ever written in any Genre. Even to this day it hits hard at your emotions and I wasn't a abused child so for actual abused children I can't imagine the emotions they feel hearing it. This song wasn't meant to entertain you, it was meant to awaken you it had purpose.

Growing up as an abused child. I remember vividly the first time I heard this song. I was so shocked someone was talking about this. I had just gotten out of my situation and into a safe place with my grandmother. Starting middle school. I love this song. I hadn't even thought of how much people was silent about this issue back then. But it wasn't talked about even if people knew. They just looked away

Hearing this song again brought tears to my eyes.
I can say this now. This song scared the hell out of me as a young boy. I sank lower to avoid the reality of what it was. 80’s was a messed up time. I got off easy I think or just never talking made it seem that way. It is a scary thing live with what you know or roll the dice and hope for the best. When your mind is fucked that is a hard decision.

I was 21 when this came out, and he's right - NOBODY talked about it. By that year (1980) I was already out of the house - thank god. It took a long long time to process what happened in my own house of horrors as a kid growing up in the 60's. If fact I'm still doing it at 64 years old and I'll probably never be done with a process that can take a lifetime. Super powerful stuff delivered by one of the greatest female rock singers of all time. Nobody else of the planet could sing this song with as much derision and grit as Pat Benatar. Thanks for all the great commentary by Burch and the bravery in sharing part of his story.
I relate to this song in much the same way you did. One of my all time favorites because of that. I would love it if you checked out another band called "the Warning" which is comprised of 3 sisters and feels like 70-80's rock in many ways. There is a song called "Black Holes" that was written by one of the 3 girls after she read a story about someone who had an addiction; the song is written from the point of view of the addict. And she wrote it at the age of 13.
Pat & Neil have what they call their Facebook 14. They are the 14 songs, if any are not played when they are in concert, they catch hell on Facebook after the show. They are still touring, but they usually do "Hell Is For Children" acoustic.

Pat was a fireball and rebel from the start. It took years of delay for her Hall of Fame induction because she refused to be inducted without her husband/producer/guitarist/song writer, Neil Giraldo. He was critical to her success in the 80s and they have been a powerhouse for 40+ years now. In addition, his is a criminally under appreciated guitarist. And you are right, she can sing!!! Check out her version of "I Need a Lover", "Promises In The Dark" and "Fire and Ice". Her vocal power is amazing. Pat Benatar with Billy Squier as the opener was the first concert I ever attended. I still remember it fondly 40+ years later.
Terrific reaction guys!! Loved it!!! Pat Benatar has a ridiculous voice and in my opinion, she is the best female vocalist in rock. She is classically trained in opera before switching to rock, and I'm glad she did!! I remember this song coming out and was just a banger. I love the up and down tempos of it (I'm definitely a fan of time signature and tempo changes- Rush fan here). This song just rocks!!! Do some more of Pat Benatar!! You guys rock!!!

Pat is from Long Island, NY like me. I was also 10 when this song hit the radio. This song cause a lot of anger because many people failed to read the lyrics and thought that Pat wanted children to go to hell.
Pat was nominated for the Hall of Fame before but refused to accept until she and her husband Neill were inducted together. As she put it - there is no Pat Benetar without Neil Giraldo. Operatically trained with a wide vocal range she stumbled into Rock n Roll, never really considering as a career. It was Neil that inspired and brought out the best in her. Her catalog is filled with great songs. "We Belong" is about her and Neil, give it a listen

Back in 1992, I spent the summer at the Point Dume Mobile Home Park in Malibu. And every Thursday Pat Benatar drove her daughter in for piano lessons. What a beautiful woman. It was without a doubt the best summer I ever had, until the rioting. I also jumped into the hot tub with Mick Fleetwood and his daughter. And no, he was not happy at all.
I run a online rock radio station and we do featured artists every Sunday afternoon with a lot of trivia, artist information and song backstories. It may interest you to know that Pat's mother was an opera singer.
Before going into a career of Rock music Pat had been accepted into Julliard. Pat Benatar was born Patricia Andrzejewski in Brooklyn and raised in suburban Lindenhurst, Long Island. Pat who sang classically, honing the powers of her 4.5-octave voice as a member of Lindenhurst High's musical theater department. Winner of four consecutive Grammy Awards for "Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female" (1980-1983) and nominated four more times in 85, 86, 88 and 89.
This really was a departure for Benatar as she was mostly known for pop rock. Then I heard this in the animated movie American Pop. Wow!

Pat Benetar is incredible. Both her voice, but her commitment to the message is to be lauded here! I'm not sure how she did take such a sensitive and dark subject (and indeed taboo for the time) and make it into a fully accessible, killer, rocking track - but I'm glad she did!

I believe she said at a concert that this was her most important song and only missed playing it once. She also donated all the proceeds of this song to charity. Another in this territory by a different artist is LUKA by Susan Vega.

Yes, she is yelling the lyrics toward the end, yelling against the abuse, the violence, the terror, and darkness of a once silent epidemic, you two absolutely nailed this one, good work. Sorry to hear of your awful past experiences with this subject matter, but you seem to be a very well-adjusted, knowledgeable, caring person, with a wonderful daughter. As a man in his fifty's still trying to climb his way out of a dark pit of his own, full of multiple tragedies due to mental illness, personal emotional traumas, and a state of inertia, I could learn something! Will be looking out for more from you, stay strong!!

They used to play a short intro song before this called "Suffer the Little Children" that was also Haunting. Love Pat & Neil.
Both my parents were drug addicts, alcoholics, neglectful, and extremely abusive in more ways than one. I had to use many excuses for my injuries I fell off the swing, fell off my bike, fell downstairs, the door hit me, I fell out of a tree, etc. I was considered by most people to be very clumsy but little did they know. This song had a big impact on me too and still does. When I first heard it I was only 8, it brought on confusing feelings because even though it helped me to understand that what I was going through was not my fault it also broke my heart to know that other kids were going through the same thing that I was and I hated that more than anything. As time went on I started to hear more songs that I could relate to such as Aerosmith's Janie Got A Gun and Skid Row In a Darkened Room. If it wasn't for music I would not be here because it saved my life more than once and that is no joke.
