She sings this with the intensity the subject matter reflects. Abuse is bad enough but when it's done to the most innocent, that is indeed hell.

I will forever admire and respect her and the band for this song. I think it made a real difference. People talked about this song because it hit hard, this subject was unheard of in a rock song, and it was a hit. Great reaction.

This was a big hit record that helped focus attention on this still enormous problem. "Luka" by Suzanne Vega did the same with a very different vibe.

Pats vocals and Neil Gerard’s guitar playing is amazing such a he heart wrenching song to hurt a child is just unforgivable so disturbing to think of those beautiful souls being abused so grateful that pat had the guts to do something about it thanks for the reaction

Love this! I had a friend( very Christian) who gave me this cassette because she didn’t like the name and thought it was a devil

I lived the life and appreciate Pat for this song. I loved it as a child because she was the only one that completely encompassed my feelings at the same time I was living them.

This was the encore to a Pat Benatar concert I saw at the Hollywood Sportatorium in the early 80's. I was in the nosebleed seats so I had a great view of the audience literally rocking the place! At the end of the extended version, Pat and the band brought it down ( if they hadn't there would have been a riot trying to get out of the parking lot!) with their version of Paul Revere and the Raiders' 'Just Like Me.' So funny to hear the people talking about 'the great new song she wrote!'

She was big back in the day. This is an important number with a vital message. Musically powerful, too. Damn, did she have great pipes. On a related note, one of the most powerful statements about child abuse ever penned was written by Fyodor Dostoevsky in "The Brothers Karamazov". The chapter "Rebellion" in that work may be the greatest thing I've ever read.

She was on tv here in England alot on certain Rock shows like "Raw Power" & "Casey Kasem" with artists like Whitesnake , Aerosmith & Alice Cooper among many during the 80's. Certainly has her place in music history. Enjoyed your reaction as always. We listened to a lot of radio back in those 80s teen years and it was fun to crank it up at those rocking jam parts, especially at keg parties... Memory lane for sure... I was lucky enough to catch her once live with a bunch of friends. Nothing to criticize about the performance except as usual the audience wanted more... (Note - it is R rated) along with "Rock & Rule" and "Heavy Metal" (all R rated). The early 80s had some interesting animated movies. For a while it looked as if North American animation would mature to reach that of Japan's. Alas, that didn't happen.

Never near the top of my classic rock favorite list, but she has always held a solid spot for the genre. Saw her once in concert at her height. And SHE ABSOLUTELY ROCKED. Her voice live, and band- WOW. To me, Ann Wilson is the female voice of rock. But Pat is close to the throne. As to the root of this video, a powerful and important theme to discuss. The lyrical analysis is stunning. Off topic, just saw Jethro Tull's new video, "The Zealot Gene". Daniel, please, please. If you haven't seen it, please. It's THAT good. Like 1970 in 2022 good :)

    Heartbreaker- Pat Bennatar

  • @SWLinPHX
    @SWLinPHX 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Most of Pat Benatar‘s hits, especially the first part of her career were angry and bitter rants of those of someone who had been wronged or someone who was warning another person, mainly a man, not to try and hurt her. These include some of her biggest hits like “Heartbreaker”, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”, “Treat Me Right”, “You Better Run”, “Fire AndIce”, “ Love Is A Battlefield”, “Promises In The Dark”, “It’s A Tuff Life” and many many more. In fact “You Better Run” was the very second video ever played on MTV when it launched in 1981. Later she softened her image with hits like “We Belong” off her album Tropico.

What is frightening is the vicious lifecycle abuse takes on. An abused child who never gets therapy or intervention believes this how love is expressed, and quite possibly does the same to their own children and/or spouse later in life.

The serious and disturbing subject of child abuse was covered decades ago by Janice Ian (15 years old at the time) - a MUST Listen: th-cam.com/video/KYLU6JIqWtg/w-d-xo.html
    Her are the lyrics:
Janey's down, can't get off the ground
Too low to fall, she can't come up at all
    Hey, Janey's just an accident
Fatal mistake on the day after Lent
    And her parents always say
    "We don't need you today
And we expect just the same"
She's got a bluesy feeling in her eye
    And it's making her sigh
    Cry, cry for Janey
Well her mother plays on the golf course every day
And her daddy, he sits at home and plays with the maid
    They've found the perfect alibi
Stay together for the sake of the child
    You know divorce don't fit
And they're too young to split
Think they're martyrs but they're killing the kid
She's got a bluesy feeling in her eye
    And it's making her sigh
    Cry... cry for Janey
    Well they put her down
And they knock it if she hits the ground
    Next moment, grab a purse
And take her out on the town
It's either a hit or a miss in the fight
A slap by day, and a kiss at night
You know their hating sets them free
Loving only wants to see Janey taking sides
She's got a bluesy feeling in her eye
What can I do but sigh?
    Cry, cry for Janey
    Cry for Janey
    Cry for Janey
    Outtro......

How did I miss 'Hell is for Children' back when? Powerful. This really rocks. Excellent review of the lyrics. Abusers often were abused themselves and so it goes on. It is a sickness that is 'given' away, as Disturbed illustrates in 'Down with the Sickness'. Pat's song is sadly powerful. David is shocking as told from the child's view. Regardless abuse is a hellish sickness. Seek professional help.

I'd call the apology part of the cycle more love-bombing ("I'm so sorry here's a present everything's better now until I do it again") than gaslighting ("that never happened, you're overreacting, you don't feel that way").
That said, it's hard enough for *adults* to break out of abusive relationships; children rarely have anywhere else to go, and also have no other frame of reference for 'normal.' If (general) you think this *is* normal, why would you question it?

Actually the biblical writ tells us Hell is for all that do not rest on Grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Those that inflict abuse on children have an abundance of Grace awaiting them through repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Considering her vastly large media platform, I never heard Pat Benatar proclaim anything at all of her joy in the Lord Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. That is incredibly sad.
      John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

I like the music but not the song. Children should never be said HELL Is FOR Children. The kids are the victims of people that should know better. And what is that teaching are kids.

My opinion is linking the hell mentioned in the song to the Hell in scripture is being a bit too literal. I don't think Ms. Benatar is singing about the scriptural Hell, but more about "hell on Earth" in their situation.
      Just a personal interpretation, though.
