Technology a $75k 2016 Ford F450 should have!

  • Since obviously a crap load of people don't understand the point of this video, I'll explain. Previous comments have made me out to be a "ford Fan boy" apparently. This video was simply made to point out that I didn't just blindly buy a Ford Super Duty and think it was the best truck out there without even considering trucks from RAM and GM. When you are spending over $70k on a truck, it's smart to look at what you're getting for that money. If I were buying a base model or even a mid line model, then "little details" might not be as important to me. If I were buying this truck to use exclusively at our ranch (Ranch truck) then I also wouldn't care about many of the luxury features. This truck is primarily used to pull our Fifth Wheel, the occasional Goosneck at the ranch as well as other "toys" comfortably and over long distances (with my family). It sounds so stupid to hear comments from people saying "It's a truck, you're supposed to abuse it, dent it, drop blocks from 5' into the bed, and let it get scratched and rust". These comments obviously come from kids who have never had an expensive vehicle or simply never had to pay for their vehicle. Furthermore, if they did buy a new vehicle just to treat like crap, then they have no appreciation for property or care little about resale value. I've owned trucks that were older and had over a hundred thousand miles on them. And yes, I was more likely to abuse them and not really care for them cosmetically. However, when you grow up and start spending some real hard earned money on vehicles (especially newer ones) you tend to treat them with more care. Shoot, I wanted every vehicle I owned to look good, regardless of how much it cost or how many miles were on it. Again, the point of this video is that when you are spending a crap ton of money on a new vehicle, you do need to shop around, look at ALL the differences in both features and function that other brands put into their trucks and make an informed, educated buying decision. The things like Push Button start as well as a slow dropping tailgate might not be an important or noteworthy feature to someone buying a XTL F150, or RAM Tradesman, or Silveraldo because the feature isn't available on them at that price. When you are in the $70k+ category, the trucks become so well equipped that every detail "should" matter, including stupid little things like the things I mentioned. End of Rant. Grant Sipos: Great point! I tend to agree. I've had 5 vehicles personally with Push Button start and it really is convenient when your hands are full and you're trying top open your tailgate or get into your truck without fishing for your keys. Also, key ignitions do get worn out if you have alot of stuff hanging from you keys. I'm fine with it, but it's just something that would have been nice.

      ThatGearHead: That was back in the 70s or 60s my friend. Trucks have gradually become far more expense than most cars. Shoot, my first Chevy 2500HD back in 2002 was $45,000 and that was 16 years ago.

      Hehe you should see the European market trucks. The whole 'Trucks as luxury vehicles' thing has only come over here in the last 3-4 years. So essentially all of our trucks up until very recently are mechanically simple, cheap & tough. Most of what we use I think would be American mid size (Ford Ranger sized) with 2.5-3.0L turbo diesels.

Damn thing is meant to do real work. These aernt luxury trucks! A f450 is meant to earn its keep not pull around a weekend camper! If you absolutely needed a diesel pick, a 1 ton would have been plenty of truck. And guess what? Every FLIPPIN auto maker has been using hard plastic in they're vehicles and they've been doing that for 30+ years! And push to start belongs no where near a hd truck!

    • @1tylerproud
      @1tylerproud 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Isaac Housley you don't know what you are talking about. Platinums are all about luxury. Sitting in a truck all day can either be very comfortable or it can be terrible. When it's my money on the line I always pick comfortable. Drive a couple hours with air conditioned seats then switch to an old school vinyl bench seat. Fancy trucks are awesome to spend time in. Why would you want a crappy uncomfortable rig to ride around in?

    • @isaachousley325
      @isaachousley325 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tyler Proud ultimately hes b*tching about the lack fancy gadgets and other items completely inconsequential to the actual comfort of the truck. Also from what i have seen, if you want a comfortable ford truck, just get a lariat or king ranch. All you get with the platinum is a few little fancy trinkets and some fancy trim panels. It's really not worth the extra money in my opinion. At least with the extra cost of the king ranch, you get a leather interior.

    • @playsinmud
      @playsinmud 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tyler Proud They are engineered to drop. The manufacturers torture test these things and abuse them far more than most owners ever will. Saying that what I said I the stupidest thing you've ever heard makes me want to think that you're either very sheltered, or get butthurt at the drop of a....tailgate. See what I did there? lol

    • @1tylerproud
      @1tylerproud 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      playsinmud you are giving bad advice. The only thing I'm sheltering is my expensive tailgate from excessive abuse. When it's your tailgate be as dumb as you want to be. I don't care how beat up your truck is. You can abuse it till your hearts content. Drive around in a beat up abused truck that you paid $75000 for. That's your right.

  • @Friedrich-Wilhelm-1980
    @Friedrich-Wilhelm-1980 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    the problems your talking about are not really problems
    anyone buying an F450 is normally using it in extreme conditions and needs to be built beyond its needs but at the same time things like the tail lights need to be fixable on the go that's why they are still the oldys because you can get them in any parts store and even most filler stations
    if you want a loaded truck your best option is to buy an XL with the extras you wanted then have a shop add on the bits and bobs that way is cheapest
    the reason you payed 75k is that strip of "platinum" makes the price jump 10k just for the trim level

    The thing that blew my mind on the 2015 F350 I had, was the lack of a light to tell me when the washer fluid is low. Not sure if the higher end packages have it or not, but I figured if my uncle's old 1995 dodge cummins had it, the Ford should of had it too?
    As far as power goes. If you don't really tow with the trucks you'll never notice the difference. The Ford is tuned to only deliver max power when needed, like pulling up hills etc. My 370hp/800tq Cummins felt like it would mop up my 440hp/860tq Ford when they were both unloaded.

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mac102004 Farms; you know, I test drove a 2016 RAM Laramie longhorn with the 30k towing package (4:10.1 and Aisin tranny, w/900lb ft), I liked the interior quite a bit, but really hated the way it felt while driving. It felt very surgy (like it really had a bad throttle response). I drove one back in 2013 and it felt the same way. Plus, the ride was horrible compared to my F450. Nice truck otherwise.

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They say the Aisin is like that, I've never driven one. Mine is a 68RFE. Can't comment on the ride too much, the dodge was definitely better, but the Ford had an extra leaf in the rear for more payload I never drove it bone stock. One thing I did like about the Ford was the lighter steering feel, I find my Cummins is a bit stiff/heavy to steer. I also miss having the number pad on the door.

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mac102004 Farms: I actually have a ton of respect for your videos. I know ppl give me crap on here because they think I'm just whining about a truck. Unfortunately most ppl don't understand that the point of this video wasnt to complain, it was to explain to all the haters that commented on my other videos, claiming I was a "Ford Fan Boy" that I still found things about the other brands that I liked better than my F450. Most don't know. but we own quite a bit of property by the King Ranch (450 acres) and we have a mixture of vehicles we use out there. Most are Ford, but a few RAMs and a couple old GMCs. We raise cattle and also sell Hay Bales. I work as an Engineer, so we live in the City nearby. nice international in your video.
      btw, we have a Terex 760B, at Genie GHT-844 (which maxes my towing out right at 31,050lbs, which is 50lbs shy of my max towing) and a Cat 420E. we have a few Big Tex and Kaufman gooseneck to tow them.

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man. Not everybody understands that no truck, or any vehicle for that matter is perfect. They are all going to have their pro's and con's.
      I must admit, I don't tow much with our trucks. We have a 20ft bumper pull rated for 10k lbs and that's all we need. My Ram is a 2015 3500, I would have went with the 2500 but I haul 2 ATV's on a sled deck and wanted the extra payload.
      Take er' easy. Going to check out some more of your vids.

    Most of what you mentionned are fit and finish issues, with a few exception being lack of features (parking sensors, push button start and slow-opening tailgate etc.)
    The complaints about fit and finish issues on the truck are undeserved. At the end of the day, a Ford is a Ford and will have the fit & finish level of a Ford. This is an expensive ford because they load it full of performance upgrades to make it one heck of a capable tool, that's what you pay for.
    Sure you could buy an Audi A4 with better fit and finish, and I feel like that's the benchmark you're giving this truck because it cost even more $, but I don't think it's a fair benchmark to have. You're essentially saying you expect the achievements of one product (fit and finish of a luxury vehicle) to be applied to another (heavy duty truck) because the second is as expensive and therefore should have it too. It's as unreasonable as complaining about the towing capacity of a bentley.

It's not safe to have all these extremely bright lights because there's no way of diming them for oncoming vehicles. We bought a 2008 F-450 last year, (2015), and after the engine blew out, air conditioning died, two sensors went out, and the turbo died.... It's a really nice truck. Fortunately we bought the extended warranty so we only have about 1500$ in repairs, but I was disappointed that a truck with only 70,000 miles on it was so easily broken. It's been running great now and it is a beast. I still really like the truck...just hope the transmission dies before the warranty does!

I know cars as lowly as the Honda Fit has them so why not these trucks?

    If you don't like the 19.5" tire situation you shouldn't have bought a medium duty chassis.
    Ford gets the payload and gooseneck tow ratings based on the load rating of the tires.
    Also, when towing heavy the heavy sidewalk will help control sway better than your standard load range e tire.

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brad Sankey: Hey buddy, so you are incorrect here. However, you would THINK that the reason Ford put 19.5s were for the payload and towing...Not the case. The 19.5s are simply a marketing tool. Why? Because an F450 pickup will never have enough payload capacity to require the use of 19.5 Medium duty tires. Now, on the other hand, an F450 Classic Cab could. The difference in payload is almost 5000lbs between the pickup and Chassis Cab. Case in point, the RAM 3500 (properly equipped) has a higher payload and towing than the F450 but while using 17" tires. 19.5s sure look good, but aren't required. That's why they should have opted for a 20" wheel. I've learned alot about 19.5 wheels since buying my truck. Don't get me wrong, I love them, I just wish I had a greater tire upgrade option.

Pushbutton starting? Really? You're kidding right? That is an F450. It is a commercial truck, whether you like it or not. LED tail lights? My father in law had LED tail lights on his '02 Ram. One failed, and the whole assembly had to be replaced at over $300. Trucks don't need technology. They need to be tough and get the job done. For the next several decades. You want luxury? One thing that could have been mentioned, are the wheel flares on the Ford dually. Aren't they still separate composite pieces bolted to a standard bed? Whereas GM and Ram have incorporated dedicated dually beds, or at least body skins… But relatively minor downmarket details are to be expected of the Fords. It keeps the prices down, which makes Ford the commercial fleet sales leader that they are.

    LED taillights suck if you live where it snows. When you get the snow swirling around the rear of the truck and sticking to the light, LEDs throw no heat, so it's more difficult to see them. Good old incandescent bulbs warm up the lens, melting some of snow and helping make them visible. If you run with your lights on, that is. I dislike automatic headlights because hardly anyone turns their lights on during the day in inclement weather and auto lights normally will not trigger because it's not dark enough. That's my ranting done. :)

    Would be nice if you could get everything you want in a single vehicle. Not sure about the push button start, it's more of a gimmick that everybody wants. Give me a key in a keyway any day, I could say if it aint broke don't fix it but gm proved other wise. So did ford when the had to stop production of the ranger because they were having problems with the rear axle. Pretty sure that a model T had one of those so this isn't like this is new tech. Probably a bean counter thing saved 2 cents per axle only to cost production downtime. That lack of thunk that you want on the door is design feature oddly enough. So if things hold true everybody should wait til next Oct to buy a new HD truck. As the first year of production of any vehicle can be fraught with problems. Assuming that chev introduces a new truck at the Texas state fair which starts this 30th.

      Mista Butterworth I've heard people say that push to start is a gimmick and I laugh. Push to start is such a huge convenience. During the extremely cold and hot months I can leave my car running with the heater/AC on and be able to lock the car without having a second car key by just having the key FOB in my pocket. I could go on and on about how convenient push to start is but you always have these clowns who are stuck in 1930!

  • @startrek91481
    @startrek91481 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    there are so many components to a keyless entry and start from rf transmitters and recivers to the button on the fob and in cab. if any one of those components fail you are stuck, and the repairs (aside from battery replacement) will be astronomical.
    not to mention. you can copy a key for a few bucks, but replacement of a lost FOB is usually dealer only and will cost sever hundred dollars.
    So, as convenient as the keyless system is. I love mine, it has some major pitfalls. Pitfalls that I feel don't make it worth the risk.

    Honestly some of these features you mentioned, why would you ever want. Xeon headlights, yeah great so now when your headlight goes out, instead of a $25 bulb, you need a $250 bulb. Worse yet a $500+ controller. Led tail lights, yeah great now when a taillight bulb goes out, instead of a $5 bulb, you need a $200+ tail light assembly. Push button start, yeah great now instead of just a standard ignition key, you have smart fob, that if lost or damaged is $200+ and typically requires to truck to be at the dealer to program. Even worse if the controller goes on those they can $600+. Its obvious that ford built this truck for the sole purpose of cheap to maintain, incredible reliable, and incredibly strong to do work. I honestly think this truck is more suited for a commercial use, than a daily driver, and that is why it lacks some of this stuff.

Trouble with integrated LED lights is when they go bad (and they will... after the warranty is over) replacements are $300 - $500 and after 10 years, nobody is making them. :( Whereas you will be able to replace those light bulbs for the next 30 years.

    I'm with you on the quality concerns too. This money in England would buy a near top of the line Mercedes S-Class. It's very reasonable to expect top of the line build quality and equipment levels at this price point, and Ford are just not giving it to you. They do seem to have got it right for 2017 model year, at least on apperiances. The new interia especially is a huge step up on materials used. I'm picturing a black metalic F-Series with tan leather in my mind. Very appealing proposition. As long as the quality is right. I'd want that new box-section chassis (frame) fully wax-oiled though.

    one thing I don't get is why other trucks don't offer adjustable headlights like the Toyota Tundra does. of course it isn't in the same league as the 3/4 amd 1 ton trucks, but if anything they should have them. with the tundra you can point the headlights down when loaded so they aren't pointing up blinding oncoming traffic amd impeding your vision at night. That is one feature that every truck should come with in my opinion.

    Here is a simple reason that super dutys do not come with LED tails, or projector headlights.
    The majority of super dutys are purchased by large corps that dont wanna spend 400 dollars to replace a taillight when an led section goes out or fails, (that they can be fined by the DOT for) the regular bulbs are quick and cheap to replace, same with headlights. HID bulbs are still up around $100 a pc, (if you dont want ebay specials) so for cheap truck maintenance, thats out.
    There is a reason SD's are so widely used in construction and by large corps, because they are cheap to maintain, crash parts are readily available, and they are the King of work trucks.
    I agree with you on the consumer side these as options would be nice, and like you said not sure why they arent even offered.

      VTWINKIE: You are kind of right the LED pricing, but wrong when it comes to fleet vehicle usage. Fleet versions of F-Series pickups do not have LED taillights or headlights for that matter. No do Fleet versions of most cars (Police Interceptor Cars do not have the same LED taillights as their Taurus sibling). The LED lighting package on all F-Series trucks (F150+) is an option on Lariat and included with King Ranch and Platinum trims 99% of the time. XL and XLT as well as base Lariat models do not get them.

    Be thankful you do not have a push button start. Lots to go wrong that keyed vehicles do not and at a friendlier price when they do fail.

    seriously ill be very happy to pay 75k for a truck like this is australia. we have to fork out 165k here in Australia for one of these. considering the exchange rate at almost parity.

    Almost everything you wish your truck had is on the '17. Even though the '17 doesn't have front parking sensors, you would never need them on a platinum or truck equipped with the 360 degree camera system. I had a '14 350 king ranch and it had all the same Caviods that your '16 has. I recently upgraded to a '17 platinum and love it. Much quieter, all the creature comforts and much more powerful. The worst feature on your gen is the air vents. They are so big then don't have much force even though they have great volume. I live in AZ and it was very bad for AZ.
    You have to remember; the chassis and design is sort of old tech and that's worth the upgrade. You would be very pleased with the 17.

      Gebhardt Insurance Group: Thanks for the great comment! I am holding out until mid next year for the Job2 model of the Super Duty. I've already started hunting for a F450...... Might end up getting one sooner if I see one at a local dealership :). Thanks for the great info though. Are you on FTE?

    the thing about the super duty is it looks the same for what, 10 years now? i could be wrong. but this thing is a work horse and i think ford knows that. work trucks don't need 20 inch wheels. while I do agree for that price you should expect premium features. I like the truck. I'm not a ford guy but i respect ford for keeping the same design on the super duty for so long and keeping it a work truck
