How to Identify an Anchieta's Cobra

  • In this video we look at some of the key identification characteristics of the Anchieta's cobra. This will help members of the public to accurately ID this snake.
    This is Namibia’s largest cobra exceeding 2 meters in length. They are light brown to dark grey in color, while some individuals have broad black and yellow bands. The black band on the neck. Pay close attention to large scales on the back of the neck as they are key to identifying this species!
    Anchieta’s cobras are highly venomous, however they are shy snakes that are seldom responsible for snakebites in Namibia. They feed primarily on other snakes, reptiles, birds, frogs and rodents.
    This snake is mainly active during the day especially in woodland areas where it hunts from a permanent ant lair.
