- This video is a follow up to the video "Original BMPCC vs BMPCC4K | Blind Test".
Original video: • Original BMPCC vs BMPC...
In this video we compare the Original Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera to the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. The video consists of a blind test where both cameras were given the same amount of light and used the same in-camera settings. The cameras were later on matched in Davinci Resolve in terms of exposure, contrast, white balance, tint etc. But the key difference in this video compared to the original video is the fact that the Original BMPCC has been upscaled to 4K using Davinci Resolve's Super Scale feature. How do they compare this time?

The initial shots I thought correctly that 'B' was the BMPCC but then was surprised that the 'balcony' and guitar shots look sharper and more focused - but then remembered that a smaller sensor chip means a greater depth of field. You can particularly notice this on the 'balcony' shot with the fairy lights on the railing. The OG still holds its position as an amazing 'filmic' digital camera.
The balcony got me too, the detail on the table looked so much cleaner I convinced myself to switch. The first shot of the dog had convinced me of the opposite right away.
Thumbs up for the dog. BMPCC moire is still noticeable after those smart upscaling
Hi Carl - Your video was one of those that persuaded me to dust off both my BMPCC -OG and BMMCC and see how video SUPER Scaled with DaVinci Resolve 17 compared to similar video shot on my BMPCC 4K. My lenses were the Meike 8mm and the Olympus M Zuiko 9-18mm (both MFT). While I have a Metabones Speed Booster BMPCC T (0.58x) adapter, I didn't use it because it won't fit on the BMPCC 4K. I compared the same video clip (1) non-SuperScaled video to (2) SUPER Scaled "Medium Sharpness" and (3) SUPER Scales "High Sharpness". Images (each shot in RAW Cinema DNG or PRORES HQ) were compared to each other and then to the BMPCC 4K images. In my cameras using the described lens - I felt that the "High Sharpness" setting was a much closer approximation to same lens recorded in the native 4K of the BMPCC 4K. All 3 cameras - BMPCC-OG, BMMCC and BMPCC 4K are equipped with the RawLite OLPF + IR cut filter.
That's awesome!
Very nice comparison video. Thank you very much.
Excellent, Carl! Thanks, I love these. 👍
Awesome :)
Its great seeing the OG still able to do amazing work, makes me happy that I was able to get one a few years ago
In terms of image quality it for sure still punches above its weight
Looks really good! Thanks for sharing
You can easily tell them apart by the depth of field and bokeh size, but in terms of colour and dynamic range they're both excellent.
Thank you for your video. I guessed the answer after the 2 first shots. Apart from moire which is a problem, difference is really acceptable. And raw capabilities in post are certainly comparable in good shooting conditions. Bravo!
Yeah the moire really is a giveaway, but apart from that the image quality is in most instances very similar. As I talk about in my in-depth comparison its other factors such as features, working with it on a set etc that sets them apart. But on image quality alone, they are very close.
Hi, Carl! Which speedbooster did you use on the BMPCC OG with the Sigma 18-35?
hahaha i knew it from the first shot that B is the OG. But at 3:32 i knew it 100% xD! that moiré in the shirt is sexy
Yeah that really is a giveaway :/
I couldn't tell on a phone screen but I guessed B was the OG.
👍👍
A is bmp4k whille b is og superscaled. it still looks preetty good honestly
Yeah, in some shots they are very very similar
Maybe my eyes are going crazy….but am I seeing better color resolution in the B footage? At 2:41, I’m looking at the color of the lamp and the edges. I’m also looking at the melting ice on the table. It looks like there’s more color resolution in B vs A. I guess one could make the argument that shooting cinema DNG @ 1080P might have advantages in color reproduction, vs shooting a compressed RAW format, BRAW @ 4K. 🧐
It seems like the bmpcc has more tint in the shadow.
I guessed right but maybe not for a good reason, on the B shots you often had a deeper DoF, is that relevant at all? lmao am I smart or lucky? I'm scared to know the truth.
Since the original used a shorter focal length to compensate for the difference in sensor size, that results in a deeper depth of field. So one could say that was a smart play from you haha ;)
Ah! I knew I was pretty wisdomous! Cheers mate
