    The most important thing you said was Trust the Technology. The first time I heard that was right before I bought my first drone 4 years ago. I was watching Rick from Drone Valley and he said the same thing. I took my time and eased on into the hobby. I've had a few times where I thought all was lost, but I remembered how the automatic return to home function worked and instead of packing up and going home with no drone, I just waited. My remote was even frozen. but sure enough, just like clock work, my Mavic Air 1 returned and landed. I was so happy when I heard it first then saw it. I tried to regain manual control but like I said, my remote was frozen. I didn't have to do anything. It landed where it took off. 4 years later, I'm flying all kinds of drones. I really like the attitude meter the most. I have flown in the dead of night and by learning to read the meter have been able to navigate right back to my position without the return to home function. It is a skill that all good pilots should learn. I watched videos like this one and many others daily to hone my knowledge. That first year was rough, as I crashed about 4 times but once I knew what I was doing I don't really crash anymore. I once had the fan in my Air 2 malfunction. The drones processor overheated and would not take any commands from the remote. I could see it just hoverning but couldn't regain control. I could see the GPS position though and quickly maneuvered to that location. I knew the drone would force land at some point and it did. I was right on top of it as it came down just missing a tall building. The point I'm making is the more you become familiar with the drones functions the better pilot you become. I replaced the cooling fan and fired it right back up again, and haven't had a problem since. There should be more videos like this for beginners. Don't be one of those guys who gets your drone and goes out on a long range flight the first day without any training. Take your time. Step-by-step. Great Video Sir.

    Well i must be crazy my very first flight ever was over the sea! plus you're not wrong my first flight over the sea was so nerve wracking that my thumbs where shaking lol! I started watching all your Mini 2 videos then found out about the release of the mini 2 via your channel so i have learnt so much from watching you that i felt confident to have my first flight over the sea. Still didnt stop me crapping it lol.

    Crashed my Mini 2 at the beach. Dipped it in fresh water to flush out the sand and got it back in the air after drying it. Two obvious problems, the yaw had a hiccup, as if a grain a sand was stuck in it. It never yawed normally again. It would glide away and around if you yawed in a hover. And the camera had a foggy lens, which after a few days in the AC cleared up. On another flight I crashed it at a water fall. Thank goodness it was fresh water. When I got it up again after drying it with a fan, to my surprise the hiccup was gone and now it yaws perfectly fine. The batteries work fine as well. Take what can from that. But take every precaution as laid out in this video; it's great advice.

    My first proper flight was over a river, whoops! I felt confident with it though and was not worried. I guess flying over the sea can be a lot more challenging though with the waves and wind speeds etc. I don't live near the sea but there are lots of rivers, ponds, lakes etc. Thanks for another great guide

    Great advice, i have just got the mini 4 pro and took it on holiday for its maiden flight, or rather mine, i had a situation where it was fighting the wind and loosing, so i dropped the altitude and it came back safely. Good advice winds tend to be stronger the higher you are, it was just instinctive and lucky for me but had i watched your video first it would have been less of an anxious moment.

    I fly over water all the time as I have a large lake on my doorstep. But, I did most of what you say. Stay close to the edge and practice loads. Now I fly about 3mtrs above the water. But we have a lot of wild life on the lake. If this is the case I fly about 10 mtrs above the water. Then use the zoom.
    I have started using the sport mode and followed your advice. What fun that is Darren lol. Hope your well, thanks for more great info. Speak soon my friend

    Setting disconnect behaviour to hover should come with a HUGE disclaimer. Especially as alot of these recommendations are important but very much for rookies.
    If the drone dc's and sits hovering in place many folks could lose their drones due to signal dropping out unexpectedly. In situations like filming from a boat it works great but if filming over water whilst stood on land I'd say it's pretty risky.

  • @Glenrsi
    @Glenrsi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    All valid mentions and a must to remember. Most drone disasters i have seen were due to wind and or flying too far. Things i never ever do.

    Hi Darren, thanks for another good video. Today I was flying over water, a nice river in Dublin (Liffey) but as I was doing so, one unexpected thing: birds started to fly by as I was going. I have no idea why but I just raised it by some 30 meters and flew back. Some birds were on the water so maybe I scared one and it called its mates to attack, but I wasn't very close to it, so maybe they just didn't like the drone. Happily, the drone is back and nothing bad happened to it (they didn't actually attack it). Flying over water can be tricky indeed. I wanted to go under a bridge but I was afraid the down sensors would detect the water and it would rise and crash into the roof and then plumit into the water, so I gave up on that.

    Hello, excellent video and very good advice, very useful. Last weekend I made my first flight over water (in the port area in the Province of Buenos Aires, in Argentina) and I felt very comfortable, although I was quite conservative with the altitude. I have noticed that the changes of the wind are significant (especially advancing in the afternoon and arriving at sunset) and that of course affects the battery. It has been a fantastic experience, and watching your video I will surely use some tips (I have already used the zoom for quite some time). Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina, a happy owner of a Mini 2!

    I have always wondered why DJI does not allow the choice to have RTH to the controller automatically...is there a reason we can't choose the controller as the home-point and not have to manually update it all the time if we are on a moving boat?

    • @TerryMcGearyScotland
      @TerryMcGearyScotland ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just guessing here but surely you only need to update home when either you decide to bring it back OR the drone is running out of battery and tells you it’s going home. I assume you can change home at that stage. I’ll try that next time I’m out with mine. Deliberately let the battery get low and try to make home somewhere else -on land!

    • @REB556
      @REB556 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because it goes off the set gps point, if you lose signal it will go back to the point since it lost connection with controller. At least I'm guessing that's why.

    • @Marvin-fn7ks
      @Marvin-fn7ks ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was my question as well. Default to controller should be an option.

    • @HeathBlythe
      @HeathBlythe ปีที่แล้ว

      RTH works with GPS coordinates, hence why you need to update the home point location if you’re on the move. It isn’t dark magic that rules this technology.

    I’m hoping to get one next week, first drone. I will be practicing in a wide open area first for a few days and then going into the countryside before eventually flying over my home city of Bath, UK ( I put UK because there is a Bath in America 😂 ). Some beautiful views here, but with anything I do I always practice first. Because £650 might not be much to some, but I am an unpaid carer and money isn’t exactly flowing.

    Thanks again - another very useful video. Water is a great source of stunning videography and photography - alongside buildings (new and old) and dynamic natural scenery. All great tips though - and another thing (if wind is flat against the drone) would be to adopt the sailing technique of tacking - take the wind at an angle then turn and tack back to the original course diagonally; that way, you’ll make progress, albeit slowly. Sailors have to factor that all the time when combatting tides and winds. 👍

    Great tutorial sir, thank you! Quick question for you- how safe would it be to film a mastershot of a subject that is actually in the water? There is lighthouse that I want to film that is in a river near my house. How high should the drone be in comparison to the lighthouse before I draw the rectangle around it to select it? Would I be safe being level with the top of the lighthouse? I just don’t want the drone to do it’s thing and get confused over the water bc I know that the bottom sensors aren’t the best over water. Thank you very much in advance!

    • @DMProductions
      @DMProductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      in that situation id prob use a few different quickshots as MasterShots does tend to lower altitude a few times during its videos so the safer bet would be quickshots.

    One of my first flights was near an "authorization zone", I was standing just over the edge of the zone about a dozen yards from the shore, and flew it over the open water. When I fired up the drone, it said my location was OK to fly, so I set the home point and I was good-to-go. I flew in the direction away from the authorization zone, got some footage of the shore, then decided to bring it home. I hit "return to home" and it flew toward me but stopped about 5 feet inland but would come no closer to me. It seems geo-fencing was preventing it from coming any closer. I took over manual control and it refused to make the last 30 feet to where I was standing. I was sooooo thankful that it least was hovering over land, but it was ridiculously close to the water's edge. I don't know if GPS positioning has an error margin that large or what happened, since it reported me being outside the zone where I launched. In the future, I think I'll get authorization first even though I won't be flying within the authorization zone, so this doesn't happen again.

    Great Video! I am somewhat new to this and water (with I live by) scares me to death. I have ventured out a little more lately and last evening I planed to fly to the Madisonville Lighthouse just before and during sunset. When I arrived I forgot how far it was (.393 miles or 2070 feet) from the only access point, because I've always taken photos there with a 300mm lens. But I ended up not flying for two reasons. One, the wind was a cross wind at 13 mph and two (the main reason), on the power lines at the access point were about 80-100 Purple Martins. I did not want to be 80-130 in attitude about 2000 feet away, and have those pesky birds getting nosey, since they do so when you are over 80 feet. That would not have ended well, so I chose to wait and fly another day at a different time. Thanks for giving me more confidence. I know the M3P will do well... just worried about me!

      definitely try it first on land in high winds. while minis are realy good (at least 2 and 3) for such a small and light drone, then aren't miracle workers and will never be same as mavics etc, when it domes to wind resistance. but should be just fine in some moderate wind.

    A question in reference to resetting your home point @ 5:39. You mentioned having a wifi connection with my mobile phone to be able to change the home point while the drone is in the air. I understand that part but the next part was unclear. You said by clicking on the controller icon on the screen it will pinpoint on the map where the drone and controller are at that exact time. By doing that will the drone only land at that updated point or will it land wherever the controller is (even if the boat has moved from that set point) ? I ask because I am an Autel flyer and we have the option to set the home point to me ( meaning if I am driving a car or in a moving boat, the drone will find me and land wherever I am at that "return home" activated time) enjoyed your video mate, yes I just got the mini 3 pro as I believe this One will be a keeper, she's a beauty !!!

    Great Advice Darren, water is great to record but its like trying to hit a golf ball over water. Yup I have sunk a few ( golf balls that is). Nervous at best.

    I did start the drone on a river from my SUP and landed there as well. Almost no current, but a bit of wind. So i was drifting. I can say, that was risky, managable, but risky. Better you stop for that at a river bank. I did that again in the Rhine: too risky! No control at all. I had to stop at a beach to get the drone back

    This is my first drone. Initially I thought now where am I going to fly it and I went to the park to get down the basics..... Next day I was up over the lake. I NEEDED and WANTED to know what it could do. It was not a windy day but as a new pilot my inexperience was quickly noticed. What I did was go out 500 ft. Find my location and come home... 750.... 1000... I wanted to know my surroundings visually thru the remote. Happy Flying!!

    Awesome flying over water tip's Darren? I must agree with you on how awesome it is to fly out over water? Every time I'm near water with my drone, it's a must.

    question regarding approaching manned aircraft. If you are over water, how low can I go and be okay? I get the landing on land part, but over water I kept my drone below 20ft above the water. No way was I going to hover 2ft above a lake. Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you.

    If you are using the new RC controller, do you always have to connect it to your phones wifi hotspot before flying or is it just for risky places like flying over water etc? Great video though, good tips

    Fly into the wind ,stay over 3 meter above the water ,watch the battery,tell yourself it isn’t anything different then flying over a field…mostly self confidence…I live on the coast and I fly out to a large rock in the middle of the ocean …so once I felt brave and finally flew out and took some incredible pictures of it I was okay, but I remember the rules I set for myself and try not to be careless…you can do it !
