When learning to fly straight I would fly parking lots and use the painted lines to follow just looking at the screen. Fly forward,backwards and side to side. It works good for muscle memory!

I absolutely agree with you. As a novice for this new pastime of mine to get me out and about and thoroughly enjoy it, this was the (now only) channel I needed to go to for anything for a newbie drone related lessons that are easily understood. At 74 years old, that means a lot to me personally and this chap makes it a joy to listen and learn - and never be bored like on some channels.
Wow! I have to say, Matthew, that you do the absolute best videos. Your video editing, instruction, pacing is so good! You don’t wander off-topic and you share crucial tips and insights, including all the settings. This video, for example, has a large image of the controller on the right, perfectly mimicking what you are explaining on the left. Perfect! I guess you did a screen record, but how you kept the video of the controller perfectly still was stupendous! It allows the viewer to actually see what you are doing on the controller settings. Having the larger close-up view was perfect, compared to other TH-camrs screen records. You deserve a million subscribers.😊
Great video. Exposure is always tricky. Having a fixed exposure where the light is constantly changing is not a good look. Some of your footage will be under exposed and some will be over exposed. Personally, I think auto exposure is the best option in these circumstances.

@@TheDroneCreative I live in the USA. Thankfully I purchased the DJI insurance, and was able to get a replacement from DJI for a reasonable fee. I strongly recommend the DJI insurance. My poor drone after my crash had a broken arm.
Solid recommendations. Coming up on one yr with the M3P. One thing I am trying to master now, while using all of these recommendations, is to fly inside a canopy going down a slope while maintaining the same smooth low altitude perspective, it's very tricky. An altitude cruise feature would be a great software update

I am a newbie in this field of flying. I have the DJI PRO 4 Mini and so far I have logged in only a mere 1:35 min of air time. Mostly just trying to figure out what I can do with this. Your videos are great!! Thank you for making them so people like us can have somewhere to get our foundation built and get our confidence level high enough to be a pro flyer. Hopefully, I could make a cinematic movie! Need help though!!!

Thank you so much for those tips! My wife uses her iPhone when walking to get video and even the iPhone 14 pro max doesn't remove all the walking motion. Flying the mini 3 with obstacle avoidance off did the trick. I felt a bit foolish on that one lol but worry about hitting things telling me I should be walking closer to the drone and watching the drone, not the controller screen! Thank you for all your great tips videos

Excellent video 👍 As for flying straight… wouldn’t it be great if you could lock the controls so to only go forward/backwards… or maybe customize the buttons for forward & backwards so that you couldn’t accidentally drift left or right? 1:56.... WHAT! I had not clocked this, I keep the controller in Cine all the time and had not realised I was actually in Normal. MANY THANKS for pointing this out.
Hi Matthew, I had never noticed it defaults to Normal mode when you turn it on and does not respect the button position! Thanks for that! One thing I do whenever I can is follow the drone to make sure the path is clear. Of course, if it is over water or something I can't follow it, that does not help. With the Mavic Mini, I used to use the Litchi app only for the VR goggles mode. I have one of those cheap goggles you slide your phone into and that made flying in tight spaces way safer and much more fun. I guess the Avata or FPV drones do this but it would be nice if the DJI goggles were not so pricy to use it in such situations. I loved flying with the VR goggles.
The button position is always worth checking the first time you turn the drone on. I have heard of others doing the VR mode too for tight space flying. I believe the dronemask is good for this but haven't tried it myself!
Yeah - this is a great point - thanks for sharing. The only niggle is it will still drift up and down with obstacle avoidance set to bypass and sideways movement turned off. So if you fly close to a branch it will duck and dive. This isn't a huge issue, but if you want a perfectly straight tracking shot for example it's just something to be aware off. Thanks for sharing - really appreciate it!
Absolutely! When you first start trying to fly straight I have found that it is super easy to wander off course. By practicing flying straight over time you learn exactly how to hold the joystick in position to fly straight without wandering. Basically practicing the move to get better at it. Hope that helps!

Cracking video with some really useful tips. The Obstacle Avoidance sensors can't be turned off. Setting OA to Off in the menu only disables intervention. All the OA sensors remain active, feeding info to the drone's electronic brain. This is why the radar thingumajob still works with OA set to "Off". The real reason the drone rises as the ground rises with OA "Off" is because of how the infrared positioning/landing sensors function. The Mini 2 does the exact same thing.
Superhelpful hints for beginners. I lost my DJI Spark years ago when batteries got crucial in the woods and the aircraft did what it was supposed to do, it simply tried to return to the homepoint, unfortunately at RTH height. As the result it made upflight into the branches, the props were destroyed and also the batterie when it crashed on the ground.
Well explained and especially for beginners but also interesting for me because I did not know e.g. that the down sensors are always on. Like to see more of them useful videos.

you forgot to mention turning off the sideways movement, this ensures the drone won't drift. Which makes it flying straight much easier. Great vid!
