    Serie called Frieren talentless in relation to her age because Serie expects more for someone has lived more than a thousand years. (This is also why Frieren said that she isn't the mage Serie wishes her to be)
    Serie's capabilities are also way beyond what Frieren can do. Lernen, the old 1st-class mage was able to detect Frieren's real mana, compared it to Serie saying it's almost as big but what he fails to realize is that the mana Serie is projecting is also suppressed. This means that Frieren's full mana is only as big compared to Serie's suppressed mana.
    Another thing about Serie is that her words do not always reflect her action. She first did not agree with Flamme's will but then she established this system of having first class mages of who she closely mentors. She also said that the spell of flowers was stupid yet cultivates a greenhouse full of it. And finally, she regrets having human apprentice only to be excited to take Fern as hers.

    Serie's a fun character. She's an OG tsundere. Despite how she talks down on her peers, she does seem to genuinely care about all her apprentices; otherwise, she wouldn't care to remember things like Flamme's favorite spell and dreams, or Sense's quirk of being silent when troubled. There's a lot of irony in her actions too. She didn't want to carry out Flamme's will, but 1000 years later, she chooses to head the Continental Magic Association. She calls the field of flowers spell useless, but she proctors her exam in a greenhouse full of flowers. She says constantly suppressing your mana is an unpractical, inefficient skill, yet she's mastered the ability to an even greater extent than Frieren. If their default mana suppression is 1/10th of their total mana (how Flamme instructed Frieren to do), then Serie's actual mana pool is 10 times the size of Frieren's. It seems to me that the way Serie speaks vs the way she acts is her way of coping with her own extended lifespan. She has to constantly downplay the importance of the humans in her life because she knows she'll outlive them all.
    As far as the dub's quality goes, it's pretty good and worth watching if you want to focus on the visuals. I don't think it hits as hard as the Japanese voice acting, but they still chose some really good voices for all the characters.

    • @adamwu4565
      @adamwu4565 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Regarding Serie's use of mana suppression. The technique wouldn't really be that useful for her in combat. She's so famous that it is highly unlikely it would prompt anyone to underestimate her in battle in any way that would be materially useful to Serie in a fight. And even suppressed she presents as having the largest mana pool of any mage alive in the entire history of the world as it is. So her using the technique is, basically, "on a whim." Like taking Flamme as a student was "on a whim".
      As in, she's doing it simply because it reminds her of Flamme.

    • @adamwu4565
      @adamwu4565 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      She also is described as a war monger who claims to only care about talented mages, but she intervenes and changes the usual final test stage to one with zero combat, just so that the weaker examinees would not have to be exposed to a high risk of getting killed.

    I think what Serie means when she said that Frieren is not that powerful for her age is not because Frieren is weak for an elf, she was the strongest in her village, she is a genius. I think she means that she could be much more powerful if she was like Serie, Frieren doesn't care about conflict and power as much

    • @adamwu4565
      @adamwu4565 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Yeah. Serie is judging Frieren only on combat power, and we know Frieren actually puts more of her energy and effort into learning non-combat magic.
      But of course, this also means that what we saw Frieren and her clone uncork in the battle in the last two episodes, is something that Serie would consider to be "weak".

    Basicly Serie full release manna pull at least ten times larger then full Frieren mana pull and she is better then Frieren in terms of concealing it (probably it was Serie who teach Flamme how to use this trick in first place).
    .
    Lernen was able to detect that Frieren hiding her true mana pull (first in decades after Demon King himself), but he fail to saw the same in Serie. Fern was able to detect it

    • @adamwu4565
      @adamwu4565 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We do not necessarily know that for sure. It's not a given that a mage suppressing their mana will always reduce themselves to 10% of the their maximum. The visual representation of how much mana Frieren was showing was noticeably smaller during her fight with Aura than it was at the beginning of the mage exam when Lernen was observing her. So she likely suppressed it extra low for the sake of deceiving Aura, while for the mage exam she was letting it ride higher. Meaning that Serie very likely can also choose to display however much mana she wishes to. It may be that she is only suppressing her mana a little bit, because she's only using ability for sentimental reasons (in memory of Flamme), or she could be suppressing it a lot lower than 10% because she's just that good at it. So her mana pool relative to Frieren's can still range from maybe only 5 times as big to maybe even 100 times larger.

      @@Алексей545-т6б Yes, but in that scene Flamme was only suggesting that value as a target for Frieren to practice at, near the very start of her training in the skill. There's no reason to think that the 10% number is somehow locked in as what Frieren always does. Indeed, since that scene was at the very beginning of Frieren's training, we would actually expect that she can likely do much more than 10% now if she wishes to.

    • @kpetalis
      @kpetalis 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@adamwu4565Lerner said that Frieren's unrestricted mana was almost the same as Serie's mana, meaning he has seen how much mana Frieren has. He probably knows how to judge the true amount of mana someone has if he hasn't seen her with it unrestricted. We know this because of Serie's own comments that Lerner was the only one to have so much control and detection capabilities that he managed to see that Frieren was concealing her mana. But, at the same time she comments that even he was not able to see the fluctuation in her own mana, meaning that Lerner assumes the mana he sees her output is her total mana.
      And comparing the mana Serie is shown to output in the anime and manga, it is comparable to Frieren's output when she unleased it against Aura. Now, assuming that Serie taught Flamme the way to restrict her mana, a safe assumption since Flamme was taught by Serie since she was a child, that means that the restriction method should be the same, meaning 1/10 of the total output. That means that Serie's mana pool that we see is 1/10 of her maximum output, and that 1/10 is even larger than Frieren's total output.
      While we make some assumptions, those are all pretty safe assumptions to make I believe, and those assumptions are all almost validated later on in the story.
      In sort, Serie is an absolute monster, Frieren is a moderate mage for an Elf, and Fern has amazing potential. If Frieren ever had to face Serie in battle, then she would say the same thing Denken said, no thanks I'm bailing out.

    The anime made a bigger contrast than the manga between Fern's silence (when she was asked by Richter whether she was Frieren's disciple) when she was upset with Frieren, versus her final proud and loud declaration that she is Frieren's disciple after Frieren had her staff fixed for her.

    Heiter's dialogue in the manga in that flashback was a bit more clear in describing what Fern was realizing in the moment. He's basically just saying "Yeah, Frieren struggles with understanding humans. While this will make some people upset (like Fern), Frieren cares about the problems that she might create and will put in the effort to fix the situation/grow from it (which Heiter said he finds admirable about her in the manga)." Also, in the manga instead of saying "few masters are better than her," he says, "you will truly find no master better than her," which I liked better hehe cause Frieren is best master ofc. But we love Flamme and Serie, too.

    I personally suspect Frieren is especially good at what she does because Flamme approved of how far she had gotten in her training 3 years in and later 50 (53?) years in. That, or Flamme was using a human measuring stick to hypothesize what an elf could accomplish in the long run?

    Really sad moment that is really easy to miss is that after Fern turns Serie down. Serie is looking at Fern and is smiling as she says "I'd be foolish to turn down a promising mage", but as she turns her head away she loses the smile and says you pass with her back to Fern. She loves magic in her way and i think wants to share it with others but doesn't have the emotional/social skill to deal with people who are orders of magnitude weaker than her. When she meets someone who she thinks can bond with her on nearly equal footing about magic she gets very excited, but it also leads to constant disappointment because they reject her or just fail to live up to her expectations. It leaves her very lonely, something she may not even completely realize with how dense Elves are when it comes to their emotions. A lot of it is of her own doing for sure, but i think Serie is a really tragic character and a great foil for Frieren and and example of how she could have turned out if she had never met Himmel

    The spell Frieren talked about back in episode 26, when she said she hadn't been pushed so hard as to use it in 80 years, referred to whatever that force push she did on Fern was, what Fern called The Height of Magic. The spell Frieren did that killed clone Frieren was a simple zoltraak that she cast from under clone Frieren... that was the circle you saw on the ground, under clone Frieren's feet.
    So that wasn't the big spell she hadn't used in 80 years, the big spell was whatever clone Frieren did to push Fern back.

    Serie and Ferien are foils. Both are strong, long-lived elves, but their philosophies on both magic and life are directly opposed. Could Ferien be strong at this point in her life? Yes of course she can, if she spent her all her time gaining combat experience and developing powerful spells. Ferien just doesnt believe thats worth while. She'd rather spend her time seeking folk magic, mostly because she enjoys the journey in finding it. And that leads us to the crux of the matter. To Frienen, the journey is more important than the end point, while Serie getting to the end (height of magic) is more important than the journey there.
    Also, you can tell by Serie's actions she knows Ferien is correct in her views. She's just too proud to admit it, and that annoys her to no end. Serie is a tsundere through and through. This is illustrated so well by Serie saying that a spell to create a field of flowers us useless, while standing and enjoying a field of flowers presumably made by that very magic.

    Yeah, Serie and Frieren don't see the world the same way. Frieren couldn't care less about being a First Class Mage. Serie knows that and fails her because that's perfectly fine with Frieren anyway. Fern is the first one that could see that Serie is suppressing her mana because Fern could detect the fluctuations. Serie is better than Frieren at controlling her mana even though she said that suppressing and hiding it was a waste of time. Even then Serie cannot suppress her mana any more than Frieren's full unsuppressed mana. We don't know how much power Serie has, we don't know if we're seeing 10% of her mana or only 1%. About "Frieren is not strong enough for her age" - basicly what Serie means - making hidden your mana to the point of perfection (otherwise you would fail to trick demons which are very sensitive to this) take a lot of time. Time you that can spend on lerning other things (destructive spells, advanced combat magic, whatever). Like hundreds of years which for humans is unsustainable (due short lifespan) - it better to use your time properly and lern something else. But Frieren could afford such "waste" for herself and she turn it into weapon against demons (to the point where only Demon King was able to look beyond her trick)
    .
    Serie basicly here praising Frieren for her tactic and amount of efford she put into this. More then this - considering that Serie even better at hidding her true manna then Frieren - it look like at some point of time she use that tactic herself

    don't know why fern was the basis of "the era of humans have arrived" when there are already strong humans before like himmel, heiter, lernen, and flamme. Not to mention the character hero of the south which frieren mentioned before to be mankind's strongest. So the era of humans should've started a long time ago. Or the era of humans means when humans start to see the fluctuation of serie's mana?

      Age of Humanity already began when Flamme began to spread knowledge of magic.
      And Flamme is a freak of nature then being tutored by the greatest mage around, she is not part of the Age of Humanity
      But those Heroes are not mages. Most of them are warriors, even Hero of the South seemed to used his swords as main weapon.
      There was no human before Fern.

    13:40 its funny to watch ppl telling Aura could have a good shot in EP 27, after they saw all that shit in EP 25-26... are you guys serious? Aura had no chance, not even slightly, same as Qual. just look at her spells, she could wipe Aura's entire army with that black Zoltrack her clone used against her. the only reason she didn't do it, is that she didn't want to damage those corpses. but if she was in danger she could just nuke Aura and her army at once. it was one-way fight, period.

      All I did was quote Frieren herself... We also have been told and shown that Frieren isn't the world's strongest or most powerful mage. Keeping that in mind isn't necessarily a bad or negative thing.

    • @Circle9ru

      @@TheGenreVerse, i mean, yea, she's not the strongest, just 2nd strongest of all who still alive. as for Aura, her army can be counter by simple levitation. Frieren doing what she did had 2 reasons: 1) she didn't want to damage those corpses Aura controlled and 2)she didn't want Aura to escape AGAIN, because she did escape from thier party ~80 years ago. Frieren wanted Aura to cast that spell on her, because it gauranties Aura won't escape. and Aura's arrogance was almost a guarantie of her not having a way to cancel her own spell. Frieren sayd she would be in trouble if Aura try to overwhelm her with nimbers, butcause in that case keeping those corpses undamaged would be almost impossible.

    My theory for the test was half right I expected a Serie interview I just expected the main question to be what spell did the person want and if they refused like friren did years ago they passed but this works to so I'll give my self a little credit. Also as iv said nearly every week definitely recemend the dub the actors are great only real iffy one is specially when stark goes in scard mode the voice doesn't work as well but normall stark is great and the dubs diologe when they have to change for lip flaps or just the general changes you have to make from one language to another is also great last week's dubed episode had me laphing at a bunch of ubels lines

    So Serie's mana is at least 10 times more than Frieren. So her age is at least 10k.

    • @andrewli6606

      That assumes she suppresses her mana at the same rate as Frieren. Could potentially be either more or less. In a straight magic fight, she'll always win. Specific circumstances or non-mage tactics would be needed to defeat her. Serie wouldn't regard herself as invincible.

    Disregard for characterization and lack of empathizing with characters will invariably result in this kind of reaction unfortunately. Thankfully it isn't near as bad as say, the S.O.S brothers, but it's still difficult to listen to theories and readings of scenes and characters that come from the flanderization of said scenes and characters.
