Exactly. I have 2 skeleton watches. A cheapo forsining watch that basically showed up in my mailbox out of nowhere (didn't even order it), and an invicta. Hard to tell the time on the cheapo as it only has hour markers at 12, 3, 6, and 9 positions in roman numerals. Very beautiful movements though
Cyril Fo it’s a timeless classic just because of fashion and “fame” created artificially by a 5 minutes drawing. Think about how AP has been dragged by the fame of that 1 design for basically 50 years. Then, revolution! The new Code 11.59. Except it’s an incredible anonymous design, which has already been forgotten 😂

Never understood the 'wormwood' look to cheap skeleton watches. This goes for the $40 - $2000 (perhaps a bit more) range. It looks infinitely better leaving the bridges left brushed or engine turned than the bizarre assortment of random squiggly lines. I have two, including a vintage caravelle and it makes them look exactly as this video describes...cheap.
I got that Oris at first glance at jewellery store display for full retail price. Every time I check time I’ll stare at movement for couple of seconds , there were some instances mates use to ask me why I’m staring at watch , the watch aficionados understood but the hip iwatch gang makes fun of me.
You can very plainly see the difference in quality with the machining marks left over from the Oris CNC machines. They didn't bother to go back in and polish everything out by hand, so there are little burrs and chaff sitting in some of the engraved grooves. From a distance it looks great but... a machinist can tell.
At time stamp circa 4:00 think of a WWII pursuit P-38 Lightning aircraft with counter-rotating propellers. The plane had minimal "P factor" i.e. left-turning tendency at high climb angles. Because each propeller turned in opposite directions, the pilot didn't need to worry about the torque of the engines pulling the plane to the left as in other twin-engine aircraft.
I thought I would say that AP isn't worth the mentioned amount after I watch this video, but... what a watch. Not only for the points mentioned in the video, but also for basic design cues: golden colour is used for both arrows, for legibility, and then for the front balance, to draw attention to it. Amazing piece of art. I wonder how they combine the balances oscillations, is there some complicated pallets setup?
I think that only one has impulse jewel, the other one is there for added stability. Springs have different modules of elasticity in different direction, when spring is deformed it heats up slightly

But it's like any art form, there will always be those works of art in which the greatness or skill required to create an effect, whether on canvas, in music or a bit of metal, aren't immediately apparent to the eye. But when you see it, you get it. Some really beautiful photography in this too. Thank you.

Here is where mechanical watches sometimes make very little sense. Take a Swiss mechanical like a Hamilton or Tissot, or even many Oris watches. Then when they need a service you will have to prepare to pay a rather ridiculous amount which sometimes is more than what the watch costs. So you end up like me and you purchase every single watch tool you can and you learn. Now I service many of my own watches that costs less than $2000.00 . When a Chronograph service costs at minimum $750.00 then you will understand why it makes more sense to buy the tools and a bunch of cheap watches to learn. So if you decide to get into a Swiss mechanical then understand that comes with maintenance costs later.
I have a few skeleton watches, with the most costing $40. I love them, skeletons don’t have to be expensive like people in the comments making them out to be, it’s just a watch without a face
I know nothing about watches, but always loved the meticulous craftsmanship. When that hand crafted one came up on my screen, I felt a bit of an aura coming off of it. It was beautiful!
The actual issue here imho is that most mechanical watches are the same, and are much more identical inside than say quartz ones which can differ massively inside depending on how it is soldered and the shape of the crystal. The AP is nice to look at because it breaks the mold and has a more unique interesting movement inside.

Its as if a part of the person is transfered into the work which makes it one off unique. Your $10 quartz watch works well. We know they're far more precise than mechanical watches for 50 years now. But there is a battery, electronic components and a quartz crystal which can't be seen. What's more, your watch will be less precise than your phone.
I hope you understand there are practical purchases, and passionate purchases. Who needs this nice handmade shirt which costs $150, while you can have a chinese shirts which costs $15?
@@clementr Yeah the AP is more art than tool.. perhaps watches in their current form are just artworks which provide an excuse to be looked at repeatedly throughout the day - they tell the time

@@AverageAlien a gshock is a giant peice of molded plastic, an skx is a Malaysian sweatshop made pile of trash that is guaranteed to have a host of defects. An orient bambino looks like something straight from ali-express. None of these are luxury watches. This channel focuses on luxury watches, entry level luxury watches start in the thousands. If you don't like this fact then go to channels that focus on budget watches. There are hundreds of them.

SKX is an amazing watch for under £300, orient bambino is the best dress watch below £200, and the g-shock is an indestructible beast of a watch. Defects at £300 are acceptable, however a Tudor was known to have some seriously bad defects which is unnacceptable at that price.
