I enjoyed it and thought that gold watch was beautiful!
The Sugess is a fine watch for a price that would've been considered impossible even ten years ago. A tasteful design, enamel dial and tourbillion for $500? Not bad at all. It will never be an AL&S and isn't trying to be. I just wish the Chinese manufacturers would go to a little extra effort in keeping the parts clean during assembly. Nothing is more depressing than seeing smudges of grease and dust on what should be a perfect little machine. Some Swiss companies screw that up too, which is unforgivable considering their greater experience and higher prices.

I like these pieces for different reasons. 1. The Sugess is gorgeous. Truly gorgeous, and it is real. It’s a real tourbillion, and it is clear that care was taken to make it something special. 2. The A. Lange & Söhne is equally beautiful, but for different reasons. It was made to be beautiful, and made by hand. Sure, the Chinese model did it cheaper, but like a hand built V12, or a Corvette Z06’s V8, you can see a sense of pride that was taken in the craft of her build. Some individual didn’t just clock in (no pun intended) and get to work, rather they worked to create art. Art that took countless years to perfect and finish. In short, you buy these two for different reasons: you buy the Sugess to appreciate the tourbillion. You buy the A. Lange & Söhne to appreciate the art of the piece.
fun fact about the sugess - since those tourbillons are so cheap to make, most swiss watch manufacturers actually use those tourbillons because legally only 60% of the value of the watch has to come from swiss craftsmen in order to be considered a swiss watch.
GOOD NEWS, he knows about the Dacia Sandero. All joking aside, your videos are always made with amazing quality and I love watching them, keep up the amazing work
Thank you for not acting like many other watch youtubers that scoff at china for horology. I would argue it's actually quite impressive given that it only established itself about 70 years ago, compared to the multi centuries industry in Switzerland. Both watches are absolute marvels for different reason, but anyone would be happy and proud with either
It's actually not really that impressive. It would be one thing if these parts were hand made but these are all machined made. If you can afford the right machine all you have to do is go to a country with cheap to lower the costs. China was/is the hub for knock offs. A forger will always have that stain.
What's even funnier is how the Swiss watchmakers tried to copy or "homage" American pocket watches back in the day. Just like how nowadays Chinese watchmakers are doing with the Swiss and wristwatches.
In fairness, China bought a whole manufacture, movements, case stamps, dies, etc. Minerva, if memory serves. It’s not as if they had to invent it from scratch, they just had to copy faithfully.
@@JJ-zr6fu It's impressive indeed when watch experts like Watch Finder himself says so. How are you to say otherwise, you keyboard troll? If it's that easy, then aren't yourself giving the watch companies a run for their money? And if you know anything about horology, you would have known that the Swiss copied French watchmaking which copied British watchmaking, so are the Swiss also forgers in your eyes? Why is it so hard not to be a racist and a hater?
I recently bought a Sugess watch. It was the starry sky, reference MG 177. It's got a Seagull ST2528 movement. And my watchmaker talked rubish about it just because it was Chinese. Sadly, my unit came with dried up oil, most likely because it was sitting there for quite some time. But man... Not all Chinese movements are created the same. And he swallowed his words when he opened it, observed at it up close and personal and saw the perlage decoration all over the movement. That's what it took him to chill and agree to service it. But he compared my watch to other $20 scrap movements he had laying around. I wonder what he'd say about that beautiful tourbillion. It even has an enamel dial!
What is it with watchmakers? Most of them do no watchmaking. They do service and repair work out of a spare room in their modest houses and have the heir of a Patek CEO. This faux snobbery is comedic.
@@jamesrobert4106 it’s pretty sad to be honest. My wife brought home a little travel alarm clock that belonged to her grandfather and I can’t even get a watchmaker to look at it. It’s not a fine time piece but it’s no different to a Jacob & co to her
This comparison may seem completely nonsensical at the first glance, but as the narrative of the video gets shaped and the reasons become apparent, it starts to make more and more sense. In the end, it leaves the audience with a joyful feeling of revelation and discovery. Well done Watch Finder.
My heart will always be with the Lange, but I have to admit - if somebody with some polishing talent got their hands on the Sugess and spent a few days giving the movement a good detail, it’d come up looking _very_ good.
The only watch I’ve ever seen with aligned screws is on the Royal Oak’s bezel, and those screws can’t turn (they’re seated in hexagonal holes). A lot easier to align non-functional screws.
Clear demo of the law of diminishing returns...far more impressed with the Sugess , yes the ALS is exquisite but so it should be! Excellent video, thank you 👍🏻👍🏻
Well put. I've always been quite fascinated by the law of diminishing marginal returns. I'm an accountant, so often having to explain why massive businesses have such small profit margins and I always rely on this good old law. Diminishing marginal returns or not, that ALS has to be one of the most beautiful watches I've ever seen. I've still got the Watchfinder original video of it saved in favourites!

For many years, I bought watches. My love started almost 70 years ago. To start with, the fact the case is rose gold (and far to reddish), should just add the gold price. Take the caliber out, and try to sell it, you will get the day gold price (probably 300 Euro). But let's stick to facts. First, prices are completely idiotic. This started somewhere in the eighties. Antique watches became collectors items. While some years before, I walked in to a shop, and bought a Calatrava brand Patek, for 1500 Dutch guilders. Some 700 Euro's now. No one wanted the old winding thing, everyone wanted a quarts. Fl. 1500, was less than a month salary to me. Buying a Calatrava today, try to buy it on a years salary!
I got lost in this video :) I know how long these usually are but when it was over I had no idea how long I'd just been entranced for, such consistently good work mate. The content in these videos is so much more than just watches and I am thankful you are still doing your thing!
Just might purchase that Sugess. They did a fine job and deserve some respect for it. The ALS is in a class all by itself and out of reach for most people, so the Sugess is a perfect fit for the general masses. Also, I am really impressed with the hacking function of the ALS. That is ingenious.
Wow that Sugess got it right. A tourbillon should be the centerpiece of your watch but pretty much every watch company can't help themselves but to make their tourbillon dials as busy as possible. Even HMC's tourbillon watches are the least restrained ones in their lineup.
Just wished the Sugess lined up those blue screws. But man it holds up very well to your camera for the price. And props for not being dismissive of Chinese watches that aren't counterfeits.
One of my watch acquaintances did a service on the sugess and came to the conclusion that is was a very capable movement. Even a very durable one at thatz
A brilliant video Talking Hands. Other than a certain Douglas Adams (R.I.P) I have no idea how you manage to think up parts of the dialog in describing some mechanical masterpieces. Phrases like "polished with a brick", and "soiled his sheets" both nearly wrote off my keyboard while attempting to have a drink. Limiting the number of ALS to 30 probably make sense as the time it takes to do all that work by hand may take a master watch maker from school leaving age to retirement. Keep up the great work!
.... a 200k watch great value for money? Let's be objective here - what does the 200k watch do that the 500 dollar one doesn't? What does the 200k watch do that even a 29 dollar watch from walmart doesn't? They're both time-only watches and the 29 dollar one from walmart will keep time better than the 200k watch. The 200k watch is a status symbol. It's so the owner can show it off to their other rich friends.
@@BLdontM function-wise, you're absolutely correct. Function-wise, we don't even need a watch because we all have a phone nowadays. If you choose to wear a watch, a Casio F-91w would certainly be the most rational choice. But let's face it. You admire a Rolls-Royce more than a Dacia. They're not on the same plane of existence, not even close. But that's not to say that a Rolls-Royce isn't worth every last euro/dollar/pound of its price.
@@EEE_MMMEh that is subjective. I wouldn't say a rolls royce is "great value for money" like you called the watch either. It's not great value for money. There is objectively a lot greater value for money that can be had. One can purchase assets that will actually appreciate in value. Status symbols, which is what the watch and RR are, are almost NEVER great values for money. If they were a great value for money they wouldn't be a status symbol anymore. Part of the reason those items are a status symbol is because there are much better ways one could spend the money - but they chose not to spend it as wisely as possible in order to show that they have money to spare.
@@BLdontM as I said, it's just different value for a different amount of money. Do you need a RR or an AL&S? No, nobody does. Is it a fair price for what they offer? Absolutely. If you want to see bad value propositions, check out watches that pretend to be premium by virtue of their label-- aka fashion watches. You're paying a fair bit and get very little in terms of quality.
Chinese are known for their love for quality. Make no mistake about that. I have a very similar, if not exact the same watch like the Sugess (without the Tourbillion) and it's a very nice watch, well made, reliable HW-er.
Thank You for this comparison! I'd just like to add that the Sugess even has a flying tourbillon, which, according to what I have read so far, seems to be the more delicate construction. I have owned a similar watch and its tourbillon stopped working after I had worn it on my left hand while playing the harp in a concert. The sudden movements of octave jumps and such probably bent its axis slightly out of shape. I wonder if that would have happened to the Lange. ;-)
The Richard Mille Tourbillon can withstand playing championship level tennis without falling apart. Nadal wears his watch on to the court and the watch has no problems. That's quality!
You can't put a price on aesthetic perfection. It shouldn't be difficult, but it's the absurdly expensive watches that send that perception of "rightness" flowing through my mind. Obviously there is a law of diminishing returns. If you want that "right" feeling and can afford the Lange, go for it.
A fantastic video today. I feel we should all celebrate a shared hobby which sees both these watches existing. The Sugess is a remarkable watch for the money while the AL&S is just remarkable in every way. While most of us can only ever afford the former, I am grateful that there are those to can fund and support the latter allowing all of us to see the artistry of high-end watch making. £200k is a lot of money, but in a world where people have no issue with blowing millions on a piece of fabric with paint on it, there is some degree mitigation.
I said it before and I'll say it again: I have three Sugess pieces, two of them chronographs (one with moonphase and date) and they're all fantastic +6 per day on one +12 on the others and if you swap the name out for anything Swiss, you would have to do a long double take to catch it. I'm going to pick up a variation of this specific co-axial tourbillon immediately after my tax refund comes in and won't think twice about spending the $500
I have this watch - different dial design but otherwise the same watch, in rose gold. I am happy to commend it to you, albeit I paid rather more than $500.
I’ve known for a long time that I need a Tourbillion in my life. Have seen the Seagull many years ago but not found one for sale. This could well be the next watch purchase for me. Thank you!
When you look at the detail shots in the video it becomes quickly apparent that the A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Tourbillon has not been finished as well as it should have been. There are many flaws there and as far as I'm concerned its either a fake or should never have left the manufacturer. Hand made is not better in this case. Look for example at 6:50, the edge of the number 4. Horrible. 7:05 and again the letters are poorly finished. 8:58 and the scrollwork is rough. For that money I expect near perfection. Look at Grand Seiko in comparison. I'm far more impressed with the Sugess!
I think its about damned time that people in the wristwatch community tipped their hats to the fact that you can purchase a high quality tourbillon for less than 1,000$. That alone makes the sugess and other similar models from china as much of a trailblazer/innovation as the A.L.&S. they're two complete polar opposites, one is an achievement in unbridled craftsmanship and art at no thought of cost, and the other is an engineering marvel and unbridled artistic expression while constrained to a very tight budget and strapped to mass-manufacturing production protocols. The fact that the sugess looks as good as it does is brain-bending. Its a gorgeous watch. Its absolutely gorgeous. And I'm sure its "more hand made" than most of the chinese offerings due to the level of complexity, but remember, this thing was designed to be punched out in a factory, and is still managing to be a pleasing peace of artwork and reliable engineering. To me this is just as breathtaking and noteworthy of an undertaking as the handcrafted tourbillons. The sugess represents the impossible. Because until the chinese figured out how to mass produce such a complex watch, it simply "could not be done". So if I buy a 500$ tourbillon and the works are less than spotless, that's OK. it was built in a factory that probably also stamps out 500 thousand 10 dollar quartz watches a day. THAT ALONE IS AMAZING TO ME. Plus, for 500 dollars, you could purchase one of these and take it STRAIGHT to a fine watchmaker and have them disassemble, clean, re-assemble, and calibrate it for you and you'd still be under 1,000$ and it would then absolutely spotless and pristene at that point. with my current budget I could only afford the sugess. But if money was no object I'd have both. The sugess for regular wear, and I'd put on the handmade one for nights on the town or date night or parties or get togethers. Why? Because even if I could afford the lange, the sugess is as much of a work of art in a completely different way from a completely different direction, and I just can't help but appreciate it. Its a modern marvel to say the least.
The A Lange & Sohne is in my personal view the ultimate in watchmaking perfection. I don't particularly like the model shown, but the quality of manufacturing is beyond belief!

Exceptional presentation and comparison of what could seem like to diametrically opposed watches. Let’s give my man here a thumbs up. How many people want to see him succeed in 2022?
I feel most of this comparison is” oh it’s cheaper thus worse and was done by machine not hand “ Yes the expensive watch looks better but it’s a different style of watch and u don’t need to keep saying it’s only 500 cause that is still seriously quit a lot of money and I don’t quit feel that the expensive watch is worth the price
I would love to see Chinas attempt at making somethething like an A. Lange & Söhne, and by that I mean with the same level of detail and craftsmanship, it would be interesting because if it worked it would be so much cheaper due to their labour costs, and you could have a beautiful hand crafted watch for a fraction of the price that the average person can afford.
Can someone please tell me the name of the font used in the A&S for the numbers? I LOVE that font so much because we had a wall clock with the same font when I grew up, and it's kinda drilled in my memory....
Historically speaking, the factual old Lange & Sohne company made no contribution to the development of wristwatches in the first half of the 20th century with the exception of the production of an aviation watch for the military purposes (B-Uhr) along with three or four other German watch manufacturers. After 1948, it ceased to exist at all, and what was (not much) left after the turmoil of the war, became part of the state-owned precision manufacturing plant of the GUB concern. The current L&S is a completely new company, founded in 1990, which owes its success to two gentlemen - Walter Lange plus Günter Blümlein also Swiss capital and innovation, undoubtedly very advanced. But 15 years younger than the Chinese Seagull. The rest of referring to a long tradition is fancy marketing, or as we say in various forms in Mitteleuropa "jemandem ein Ohr abkauen" or "Honig ums Maul geschmieren" (pouring honey in one's ear). Has anyone seen a pre - II WW L&S wristwatch with complications in person?
I have to disagree. Walter Lange is the grandson of Adolf Lange, the founder of ALS, and Walter Lange had to found a new company since the old one didn’t exist any more. So the new company has a long history. Oh, by the way, the company „Glashütte Orginal“ was founded because the Swiss copied the Glashütte movements and called them „System Glashütte“.
@@kurtkurt3626 OK. But how beeing the grandson by Mr Lange is connected with the fact that L&S did not manufcture wrist watches at all except one govermental order in 1930s? What did they develope in those times? I agree, Glashutte is completely different story but in times of DDR they had a lot of problems with proper quality raw materials for their production. I am truly amazed by the latest progress of Nomos manufacture. In the times between two world wars Saxon and generalny German manufactuters often used to apply Swiss calibers in their wrist watches. The demand for wrist watches was so growing after Big Crisis that Swiss companies devoted a huge part of their production specially for German market e.g. ARSA, Cyma.
@@piotrkaczmarczyk1792 A movement for a wristwatch or a pocket watch isn’t that different from each other. Wristwatches for men were quite a new thing for the industry back then. They only started popping up in the mid 20s, I am talking about dedicated wristwatches not modified pocket watches. Walter Lange did found the company to continue ALS and the only possible way to do this was by newly founding the company. I am very sorry but this a fact he once said in an interview. In the times of the GDR there was no interest in high end watchmaking, so they didn’t bother making high end watches.
@@kurtkurt3626 Of course you are right the wrist watches were not so popular before II WW, but it was German pre war market along with American one, which stimulated production of wrist watches in those times. I can't fully agree the design of wrist caliber is very similar to pocket one and that pocket movement can be easily turned into the wrist one, it is the matter of technology due to miniaturization. Movements from GUB of 60s and early 70s were very rustic in the nature but quite solid ones, the real tragedy were 1980s. I have the comparison with popular Swiss brand watches of 1970s.
@@kurtkurt3626 To be honest and fully informative - I know the post -war history of Lange family and their efforts to maintain the company in the neighbourhood of Phorzheim. However their workshop was limited to not more than 8 persons and production as ALP (A. Lange Pforzheim ) was very limited and mainly based on ebauches delivered form Switzerland. Walter Lange himself had much more prosperous results from being representative of Altus, Glycine and Swiza brands as well as from selling jewellery than their own production. They had also a short romantic affair with IWC but it was a ... pocket watch. Although these numerous pits on the edges of teeth (jagged material?) of the thooth weel ... , macrophotography is merciless.
Hand made art. Says it all in a way you only can in German. Such a good language like that. If you don’t have a word or an acronym for something, take some existing ones and bolt them together. For once, I’ve seen a high horology watch that I can see where every dollar is spent and I want one.
It’s actually getting very difficult to tell the difference with some styles. For instance the Swiss alp watch by moser and cie. It looks like an Apple Watch. Even has an infinite scroll wheel. It’s like 30-40k depending where you get it.
Wow, the A. Lange & Söhne is many things in one: - probably the first REALLY expensive watch, that doesn't look questionable (to put it lightly), but actually looks really nice. - the most beautiful REALLY expensive watch I've seen - a great contender to be the most beautiful watch in general I've seen - the first watch I've seen, where the inclusion of diamonds actually looks really nice
Sugess has some really nice watches out and I am going to get a few because they are such amazing value. Even on sale when I looked so a watch like in the video is under $300us. Still I like my high end watches and that A. Lange & Söhne is beyond beautiful and beyond a work of art. It's something if I was lucky to ever own one would see me just sitting for hours watching it and enjoying the amazing level of craftsmanship.
I could identify the AL&S even from the thumbnail on my smartphone. AL&S has a style statement that I really like. They manage to be extra without looking tacky or gaudy. This watch in particular feels like a piece of Victorian architecture.
I own a Luis Bolle' tourbillon that most likely has a seagull movement. It is an amazing timepiece. No it didn't cost near as much but it is an amazing piece of engineering. I always get a bit disturbed when I hear people down talk eastern products because it's the pinnacle of bias. These are excellent moral people of the highest intelligence merely trying to achieve the same thing the finest watchmakers in Switzerland are trying to achieve. Excellence. I am so glad that I don't see that bias here. So my tourbillon is made in the east and I love it. I have my eye on several sugess timepieces. As well as another Louis Bolle' tourbillon.
@@JJ-zr6fu Keep on dreaming if you think that swiss or german watch parts are "hand made". It's all just marketing BS you pay for.

As always.
My heart will always be with the Lange, but I have to admit - if somebody with some polishing talent got their hands on the Sugess and spent a few days giving the movement a good detail, it’d come up looking _very_ good.
Transform a 500dollar watch into 100k? Guess what? It would look much better than A&S, u can customise it the way your client wants 😉
For 200k. Those screws not being perfectly aligned with each other would drive me insane
Agreed....I would find it exceptionally distracting.
The only watch I’ve ever seen with aligned screws is on the Royal Oak’s bezel, and those screws can’t turn (they’re seated in hexagonal holes). A lot easier to align non-functional screws.
@@davidliu323 ...you mean the screws that have no purpose?

For 200 the screws need to be gold and it should have a kentic solar charge with Bluetooth flash light lighter compass lol
Clear demo of the law of diminishing returns...far more impressed with the Sugess , yes the ALS is exquisite but so it should be!
Excellent video, thank you 👍🏻👍🏻
Well put. I've always been quite fascinated by the law of diminishing marginal returns. I'm an accountant, so often having to explain why massive businesses have such small profit margins and I always rely on this good old law.

good luck for them finding gold or diamond for extra 500

the point of sugess is to allow common folks to enjoy something that is normally high-end and not-so easily obtainable. if you expect that much then you are missing the point. and should just buy swiss/german that can meet those expectations. even for chinese produce, there is a limit on how cheap they can make something.
@@teecchnoboy they have one with african diamonds for 700, so...
Plain-spoken and frugal, as a good Dutchman should be.
I wish a micro brand like Baltic or Lorier made a piece with the Seagull tourbillon movement with a beautiful dial and case.
I got lost in this video :) I know how long these usually are but when it was over I had no idea how long I'd just been entranced for, such consistently good work mate. The content in these videos is so much more than just watches and I am thankful you are still doing your thing!
I always felt quality and price for luxury items has log relationship. To increase quality by 1, price increase 10 fold.
To increase quality by 1 what?
+1x means 2x
not only luxury items haha
Just might purchase that Sugess. They did a fine job and deserve some respect for it. The ALS is in a class all by itself and out of reach for most people, so the Sugess is a perfect fit for the general masses. Also, I am really impressed with the hacking function of the ALS. That is ingenious.
If you are a multi billionaire, it is like a guy making $35k/year buying this Sugess.
Wow that Sugess got it right. A tourbillon should be the centerpiece of your watch but pretty much every watch company can't help themselves but to make their tourbillon dials as busy as possible. Even HMC's tourbillon watches are the least restrained ones in their lineup.
Yep, pretty much. But ate Sugesses reliable 🤔
Just wished the Sugess lined up those blue screws. But man it holds up very well to your camera for the price. And props for not being dismissive of Chinese watches that aren't counterfeits.
Bit disappointed that you didn't compare it to the luxurious hand engraved Thomas Earnshaw tourbillon from the shopping channel🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

He has done a separate video on this AL&S (and many more like the Triple Split, Terraluna, Zeitwerk, etc) already in case you are new to this channel
I don't like how in the al&s the screws holding the tourbillon aren't straight
Does the seagull movement hack?
I would say these watches *both* offer great value for money. Just, different value for a different price.
No. The $200k is plain and simple daylight robeery.
.... a 200k watch great value for money?
Absolutely.

Chinese are known for their love for quality. Make no mistake about that. I have a very similar, if not exact the same watch like the Sugess (without the Tourbillion) and it's a very nice watch, well made, reliable HW-er.
That A.LANGE & SOHNE is one of the most beautiful watches I've ever seen.
I wonder if that would have happened to the Lange. ;-)

I would bet my $$ that Sugess can make a watch on par with the AL&S watch for half the price and make twice the profit.
You can't put a price on aesthetic perfection. It shouldn't be difficult, but it's the absurdly expensive watches that send that perception of "rightness" flowing through my mind. Obviously there is a law of diminishing returns. If you want that "right" feeling and can afford the Lange, go for it.
I suppose that a routine servicing of the A.L&S would be much more that the price of a new Surgess.
Its probably more than the price of a low end Omega.

Best video in months in my opinion, good work.
Superb. The video, the narration, the message and the two main characters.
I'm going to pick up a variation of this specific co-axial tourbillon immediately after my tax refund comes in and won't think twice about spending the $500
Lol
I have this watch - different dial design but otherwise the same watch, in rose gold.
I am happy to commend it to you, albeit I paid rather more than $500.

The sugess looks like a flying, while the other one looks like a standard.

Love u for not being a snob rather a true admirer of watches regardless of their make or model
You’re really funny man haha! The craftsmanship that’s gone into that A. Lange & Söhne is mind blowing. Love the channel mate.

@9:18 the teeth on those gears seem to have a little blow out from the cutting process? Maybe cut slower and cut less material?
The cinematography here is just insane.

Great, great video.
