James R Squyres dude you not use a red dot in the air force? If you have you should know that they don’t care where the dot is after you zero. I mean you are not going to be a sniper on cod with it, but you will hit the target. Red dots are amazing and more useful than just being a dot in instead of a post. That’s the whole point, is not having to go nose to charging handle and everything that comes with irons.

Only been shooting pistol red dot for like 8 months, and only a hair over 2k rounds. But what I can say is it makes it a lot easier to stretch your range out, speed at distances past like 15 yards are way better, also the biggest thing is practice drawing so you reduce inconsistency in the draw stroke. The learning curve is sharp so it will not offer advantages at first but the curve isn’t hard to overcome where it starts really helping. By sharp I mean it will be hard at first but once you start doing well you will improve fast.

The biggest difference is when you are aiming at the target. You focus on the target vs the front sight for accuracy. It causes your situational awareness to be better.
James Burke Stated this below and I agree with him. Posting it here if you cant find it.
"Not only try it, but understand how it works too. Easy to say it’s junk if you don’t understand the concept of single focal point shooting. Now I’m saying in terms of true defensive use in the real world and not just punching paper. I’m a cop and I’ve shot for 24 years, I’m 45 years old. I thought an RDS was a gimmick. I have been proven wrong. Being able to keep your eyes focused on the threat with your dot on target is massive compared to the old dance of look at bad guy, look at front sight, look at bad guy, back and forth. Now I’ve trained with many thousands of rounds down range. There is a learning curve. But once you reach a level of proficiency, you will impress yourself with what you can do" - James Burke

that’s because a pistol is 100X harder to shoot than a rifle and takes a lot more training and practice to become proficient with. It’s just the physics of a 6 or 7 whatever lb rifle with 4 points of contact to your body vs a handgun held with only your hands and extended away from your body. Don’t beat yourself up, it will come with time , proper practice and round count
