    Hi Dennis - I want to thank you, your setup's have helped me a lot. I have both the 9x and the 9xr, the 6way switch setup helped when I did it on the 9xr w/ the naza. You will find the er9x fw is a little easier than the standard fw so don't worry about it. Also the smarty parts usb board fits into the slot where it's wires feed thru. (gives more room and protection)

      @dennisbaldwin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip on the slot. I should've figured that out! I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can about er9x. All the best.

    Hi Dennis, i though for sure you would have bought the TelemetrEZ (TEZ for short) module that Steve at SmartieParts has for sale as well. Works with the SmartiePArts Solderless Programming Board( SPSPB) and the FrSky DJT Tx module. I installed it and I am about to make the last connections. The Tez takes the received serial data from a DJT FrSky Tx module and thru the Smartieparts Solderless Programming board UART buss, makes the info available to the MPU of the 9X and while incorporating ER9X FW, easily brings the telemetry data up on screen. There is a specific version for use with the TEZ, which fits inside back section of the 9x case and makes connection with the SPSPB thru a multi pin connector. There are two ways of running the wires from the DJT module, either externally or internally. Tonight, I am about to file down the protruding plastic that interferes with the DJT's fitting nice and flush inside of the 9X's Tx module bay, and then decide on how to connect the telemetry data to the new tez board. I will do a vid on it and have it uploaded as soon as I can on my other YT channel. FlyByTheGrace which I am just getting up and running. Got to tell people about the neat stuff on that site. BTW, I am not only new to multirotor, I haven't hardly any experience with ER9X or APM 2.5 and Mission Planner. So I am virtually swamped :-)

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris, thanks for the great info. I haven't see TEZ but will definitely check it out. I just received my FrSky Taranis so I've been looking into the built-in telemetry options with it. I hear you about being swamped. There are so many aspects to this hobby that makes learning a never-ending process. I'll definitely be on the lookout for your vid. Thanks again.

    Great video. You make it so much easier for a new multirotor pilot to solve issues. I received a 9X for Christmas without a module. Bought an Orange RX module. The servo connections don't match with the OrangeRX receiver channels. So I have to configure each multirotor by watching the GUI and changing each servo connector to match the radio channels,ie throt,ail,elv,rudd. From what I've read with the ER9X you can re-assign each channel. Thanks to your video I have more confidence to install this board and FW.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate the feedback and yes, you can re-assign each channel which is pretty cool. I like that better than having to rewire things!

    Dennis Baldwin Now you are going to love er9x, it's way better then the Turnigy software, you can even customise the boot screen to your liking too , all the best for the New Year - George :-)

    It's a great thing! Had it in my 9x from the start, sadly it is now collecting dust since I have a Taranis...
    EDIT: You actually can slide the USB connector PCB neatly in the slot that is already in your 9x, it fits exactly!
    EDIT 2: Stop using er9x and go for OpenTX. It is newer and more actively developed since it is also used in the Taranis.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeroen, I can always count on you to keep me straight. I figured that connector would fit nicely in the slot but didn't actually give it a try. Thanks for validating. I just got an email from alofthobbies last night that I could order my Taranis....finally! So I've ordered it and hopefully it will be here soon. Looking forward to OpenTX. Have read great things about it. Thanks.

    • @JeroenBrosens
      @JeroenBrosens 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Dennis just nice to see someone else does the exact same things as I do ;-) And I know we're not alone in this haha!
      I also received the email from Alofthobbies, asked my buddies if somebody wanted one, it is a very nice radio!
      I am currently doing some 3D modeling in SolidWorks to 3D print some cases for the OrangeRX OpenLRS tx and rx modules I have. I want to try them together with my Taranis, the OpenLRSng software is great! Love open source :-D
      Have a great day man!

      @dennisbaldwin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeroen Brosens Great stuff! I will definitely be following your progress. I can't wait to get my Taranis and start experimenting. Hopefully it will be the last TX that I'll ever need to purchase :)

    Hello I'm fairly new to the rc community (neewbie) . My question is if i add this board to my radio what am i really getting and do I have to have the frsky module in order for this to work. Also Dennis I have watched a few of your videos... great job keep them coming. I'm hitting the subscribe!!!

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dwayne Batson Thanks for the kinds words. From what I know the SmartieParts board and er9x firmware don't care about what module you have installed. So this should work for the standard module or FrSky. Check out the different firmware loads if you have any concerns:
      openrcforums.com/wiki/index.php/Er9x_firmware_information
      Best of luck with your setup.

    Hi Dennis thanks for your videos they have always been very informative.. I have a dilemma in with radio to buy. to start I have already 8 receivers FS-R6B with my transmitter FlySky FS-T6..now between the turnigy 9xr and the flysky th9xb (newest model) witch one do you recommend for my upgrade keeping in mind I have all those receivers.(in term of module and binding)

  • @daveroche689
    @daveroche689 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would have thought it would be better to just use your Taranis and buy replacement reciever/s with the $36.
    Open TX is amazingly powerful and Taranis is made for it.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave Roche Yeah that probably makes a lot of sense. This was before I upgraded to the Taranis. Good point and I agree about OpenTX being great firmware for the Taranis.

    Hi Dennis great video! I want to say... I heard that is possible to monitor the internal voltage of a battery with the FrSky D8R II Plus receiver. Question, if I flash my Turnigy 9x with Er9x software would it be possible to monitor the voltage on my quad???

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jorge Ortiz I haven't done this before but from what I've read it seems straightforward. Apparently you jumper A1 and X on the side of the receiver as mentioned here:
      www.alofthobbies.com/frsky-d8r-ii-plus-8-channel-receiver-w-telemetry.html
      Then I believe you retrieve that data at your TX. If you have any problems with it please checkout www.garagepilots.com and post in the forums We should be able to help you out there.

    Also, something worth nothing regarding your backlight. If you power the backlight from the Smartiparts board, the backlight then becomes controllable in the er9x software. Meaning you can have it shut off at a certain time, turn it on and off with any of the switches, blink when you hit a certain flight time, etc... Really worth doing.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's awesome to know about. As I mentioned in the vid I'm an er9x n00b but have been enjoying it already. Hope to learn a lot more from you and others. Thanks Chris!

    How do you like Er9x now that you had a lot of experience with it? I'm thinking of trying it out due to the increased model memory, but I have found the various videos out there make it seem less intuitive and more time consuming to program than the stock firmware. What are your thoughts?

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +tlgrimmy I really enjoyed it although I got rid of my 9X and purchased a Taranis. Mainly because I wanted more channels. I found the UI to be more intuitive than the standard firmware, but I realize that's not saying much :) I really needed the flexibility and that's what you get over the stock firmware. BTW not sure if you've seen this recent product: smartieparts.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=378 Good luck and let us know what you end up doing.

    • @tlgrimmy
      @tlgrimmy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dennis Baldwin Thanks for the reply! I ended up just soldering in cheapo ribbon cable and put the connection point in the battery bay. I finished up loading OpenTX and added the backlight with a transistor so that OpenTX can control it. With a new LiFe batteryand the ability to control the backlight, you really get a lot more flight time than with the AAs, so that's nice. Really digging the new firmware! It's actually much more user-friendly than I originally thought it would be. I also like how you can customize which options you want, reload the firmware with the changes, and not loose any of your models or previous settings. That's super handy! I was actually able to load it up with the full 16 models and not have any connection issues either, which was a bonus. One day I'll likely upgrade to the Taranis or something similar, but it's sure nice getting so much functionally with so little investment. Those sub $10 receivers are also great when you have a ton of models. Thanks again!

    Hi! Thanks for the vid - I too am about to warm up the soldering iron! Two questions, not strictly related to 'flashing':
    How many model memories can be stored on the new programme,and
    2. Can I use my Turnigy receivers with it?
    Once again, thanks very much , Den

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure how many models it can hold. I know the extreme version can hold over 60:
      smartieparts.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=378
      Yes your turning receivers will still work after installing this board. Good luck.

    great vid. is the procedure the same for the fs th9x? i decided to get the fs th9x and add the smartie parts with the cc2500 4in1 module so i could replace all of my toy grade quadcopter transmitters. with this set up you can use it for 192 different models, including planes and helicopters. the only con with this is the poor range (it varies with protocol). for longer range fpv mini quads i have the radiolink at9. the smartie parts board now comes with the backlit screen. just thought i'd put that out there for any noobs (that includes me).

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know that the FS TH9X is fairly similar, but I'm not sure if the procedure is the same. I believe the internals are pretty close to identical but we'll have to rely on you to let us know for certain. Thanks for sharing that bit of info. Very useful to know. Thanks.

    Isnt the led panel wires suposed to be cut and soldered to the wires that come with the smartieparts board to plug in the LED plug?

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      sparrowlt Great question....and yes that can absolutely be done. I didn't cover it in the video because I was fine with my backlight being on all the time. But if you want to be able to configure it to come on and off, as well as adjust the brightness, then you can definitely do that. Just make sure you have the backlight module:
      www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__16720__Turnigy_9X_LCD_Backlight_Kit_Blue_DIY_.html
      Thanks for the question.

      Oh i had not tought about that.. i just followed smack's instructions while watching your video and a couple other.. thanks for the job..made my life easier.
      In my case it was removing an older smartieboard that had burnt out somehow and the old EL panel for replacing them with the LED panel and the newer board.. but everything worked and i have USB interface again (and a brighter backlight)

    one question i wanna use my Turnigy flashed with Er9X , and i am gonna use it for quad-copter .. what it will be your advice about the hex file that i should download it ? it is the ER9x-ARDUPILOT right... thank you for helping me again

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      elie eid From what I read is that if you want to get telemetry data on your screen and have done the mod to support it then you want the ARDUPILOT version. Other wise you can use the standard.

    Amazing. You take a $70 transmitter, add a $40 board to it, plus you've already added a LIPO battery and changed out the transmitter so you now have what, a $150 transmitter where you could have bought a $150 OpenTX transmitter in the first place and gotten a better unit.
