I saw Wendy in concert many years ago. It was a nighttime, outdoor concert. She sang this song, just her and a piano. The full moon came up over the trees and reflected on the lake behind her. When the song ended not a sound was uttered. Wendy, the musicians and every single person there just sat in silence. You could feel the emotion in the air. It was one of those moments of wonder a group experiences as one. Such a beautiful, emotional and magical evening.

Brotherrrr you did my request! Wooo hoo. This song was huge in Australia and would play on the radio non stop for years. It is about death and loss. Very soulful and sad.

That was a big call for the brother. I think that will land for him on account of his father.
It still chokes me up from 30 years ago, when my girlfriend left for Germany.

The author who wrote it said it was a mix of events in his life, not specific and the original version was a jungle mix

He is remininscing because he lost his love. Some of us, lose our love and never get over it because we can't forget. This song expresses that. This song is also about the day I left my youth behind and became a parent at the same time as losing my love....that which you can never forget, never dies.

Wendy Joan Matthews (born 13 January 1960) is a Canadian-born Australian singer-songwriter who has been a member of Models and Absent Friends and is a solo artist. According to rock music historian, Ian McFarlane she provides "extraordinary, crystal-clear vocals a soulfulness that was the mark of a truly gifted singer".

I was privileged enough to be present the first time she ever performed this song live. It was before she had released lily.
She was the support for simply red at the BEC. She performed this as her last song…just her and the piano.
You could have heard a pin drop as the last notes faded away…….then the most thunderous applause you could imagine.
Even once it was over and simply red was on stage…Mick Hucknell asked the crowd….”how do we follow that?”
Then bought her out for a last bow. Still makes me cry.❤️

Wendy was born in Canada but has lived in Australia since she was a young woman, she now carries Australian citizenship. Wendy sang backup on Cher's 1989 Album, Heart of Stone and I heard some years ago that Wendy was also brought in by Cher's team to help Cher with her singing/phrasing

Hey, does it ever make you wonder what's on my mind?
I was only ever running back to your side
I never cried, I just watched my life go by
It's just a pack of lies, 'cause you're leaving me behind
After this long is there nothing I'll keep
    Oh I can shout
    You'll pretend you're falling asleep
I never lied, yeah believe it, let your mind
It's just a waste of time, 'cause you're leaving me behind
Hey, there's not a cloud in the sky
It's as blue as your goodbye
And I thought that it would rain, on a day like today.
Hey, there's not a cloud in sight
It's as blue as your blue goodbye
And I thought that it would rain, the day you went away.
Hey, does it ever make you wonder what's on my mind?
Ooo yeah, I was only ever running back to your side
Hey, there's not a cloud in the sky
It's as blue as your goodbye
And I thought that it would rain, on a day like today.
Hey, there's not a cloud in sight
It's as blue as your blue goodbye
And I thought that it would rain, the day you went away.
