It's absolutely brutal. When you know what the song is about.... and the terrible thing he did, it's absolutely heart-wrenching. You can feel, hear, AND literally see the genuine pain he's experiencing when singing this song and reliving the awful way he betrayed his "brother".
100% agree. I have genuinely lost count of how many times I have watched it and still get choked up by the raw emotion he shows at the end. Just incredible, incredible talent
Everyone who comes to Australia all agree Australia has crazy talented artists and groups but trying to break overseas is extremely difficult unless they are willing to move to America or UK. American record companies don't want to sign Aussie artists because they are so diverse and can't be labelled as a single genre. At least Aussie artists get the love they deserve by Australian audiences and by reactors like this.
the mainstream is coming around to aussies artists, but the issue is the industry isn't really about music anymore, its about pushing a product its pure business . Alot of aussies feel uncomfortable with being an actor in Hollywood, navigating through the music industry. its the reality of the situation and why alot of australian artist stop at the door
He's criminally unrecognised, he should be someone any music lover knows of. There are two other performances I can think of he did on the same radio show here in Aus: a cover of The Black Keys' "Lonely Boy" and TLC's "No Scrubs". Then his performances on his Resolution Tour are great too, with "Trick Of The Light" and "Song For Interlude" being my faves, with those two you'll get to see him with his band, they have a very cool vibe.
Thank you for doing this. This song is one of the most emotional, profound, and captivating songs I've ever heard. It moves me deeply...it was shared with me by someone who I loved very much, that ended up taking his life. This song reminds me of him always.
Thanks for reacting to this Bethany. Really glad you got around to this track. It was what launched him at least here in Australia. For me it would be hard to go past his performance of "Song for Interlude" - Live on the Resolution Tour if you are looking for another example of the breadth of his musicianship.
He's so amazing. Soooo much dynamics, solid guitar, great song writing and a good voice. He has a live video of him looping with just his voice that I thought was amazing too, I think it's called Monday.
The mixing around in a Yodel and transitioning around the different voices are super unique and I can't comprehend how easy it sounds for him. He's sitting in the pocket of something that takes effort.
Have been privileged enough to see him live. Just phenomenal and this is my favourite version of this track. He is a chronically underexposed musical genius 🤩
@@ScottBateI’m kinda glad he didn’t tbh, most other winners haven’t had the stellar careers over here that were anticipated, with the exception of a few.. Matt chose his own route with his own label and is recording his own music the way it was intended to sound, with no input from industry hangers-on. And I for one am eternally grateful he decided to do it his way. A truly independent artist producing top quality independent music with a bunch of brilliant musicians. Massive respect 🙌🏻👊🏻💕
This is one of my all time favourite songs. The emotion just pours out and washes over you and towards the end I feel like you can hear agitation in his music as he speeds up . He's such a phenomenal talent
I remember sitting in my car listening to this live on the radio. Ended up starting as I pulled up to my destination and just had to sit and listen in awe
The performance you listened to is called Like A Version which is hosted by Triple J, a radio station here in Australia. The artists perform one of their own songs, and also a cover of another artists song. You should check out some more Like A Version songs, there are some awesome ones! Us Aussies sometimes get a bit forgotten about but there is some great musical talent here
Great reaction! I’m always biased when I watch your Australian artist reactions. It was a joy! Also, very interesting when you highlighted the movement between falsetto and chest voice because for me, I didn’t really know what chest voice was until it was highlighted here!
Your eyes and facial expressions tells us how good this song is, you can tell how much you struggle to stop listening so you could comment on his performance. Beautiful song and a wonderful reaction thank you.❤
Matt is like a vocal coach's wet dream. He is so good and versatile and can do anything with ease and technique. I cannot believe his music doesnt resonate with more people. Or they just never heard it. Its almost like Australian Jacob Collier, he's a musical savant. Extremely gifted in musical theory and ability and artistic vision. Yet we all know who Jacob is.
Cant believe you did this one,my first night watching you. And soo much connect,my old friends sister knew this guy from church and a very important song to this guy a friend and he fell out used to listen to this one when i was at one of my lowest times.
Song For Interlude (Live on the Resolution Tour) is one of my personal favs. He doesn't get the recognition he deserves here in Oz. He's definitely earned it, but a middle finger to the industry pigs following Australian Idol has "you'll never make it in this town" written all over it. Good on him
When you used the word primal at the beginning of your reaction, I thought, "Oh God, you ain't heard nothing yet" when it comes to primal. Matt is an outstanding, lyricist, songwriter, performer, musician and all round star. We have been blessed in Australia to have him and so many other truly uniquely talented performers that the world has missed out on. Check out more of Matt and also Tash Sultana, an Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with "Jungle" (live bedroom recording).
It’s because of people like some in these comments being afraid to embrace musicians that push the boundaries. I’m glad they weren’t around when Elvis or the Beatles started out.. what would they have said then?
You have to react to more Matt. He is the most singular vocalist on the planet in my opinion. He can do it all. Please check out; Monday, Made of Stone, Miracle Love, you really cannot go wrong. His gift deserves to be shared. 25k views, I hope some of them have never heard of Matt before and are now experts in his discography. His voice is a gift everyone should enjoy. Why isn't he top 40 on the radio? Thank you for sharing his voice with us all.
Thanks for your analysis of “Brother” I just loved your thoughts. I have to let you know that Matt is a “Live” player, and by that I mean there is so much more to him playing live over studio renditions. It almost seems like they are done as a contractual obligation. Matt really is his own man and described as the “Reluctant Superstar”. A brilliant track you must see is just him solo at Paste studios producing live while looping. The track is just called “Monday”, its just stunning.
Pretty sure at about 8:30 when he let out his first growl Bethany fell in love. :D It's funny you say you could listen to this many times as there is so much to hear. I've not only listened to it at least 75 times, I've watched every reaction video (as I'm sure others commenting here have) numerous times as there is nothing reactions to the last stanza of the song when he goes full raw emotion. Even the most avid video pauser cannot bear to pause that last section. Try Matt Corby Resolution Live at the Enmore. It's pretty awesome. He has a lot of amazing original work.
One our great Aussie artists.....Matt has toured the US a few time and has a big following over there. But like a lot of Aussie artists the world is too far away lol. Appreciate your reaction and analysis ....love from Australia
Incredible performance which clearly comes from alot of pain. For anyone unaware, the song is about an incident between him and a friend. He had slept with his friends girlfriend and couldn't handle the guilt and pain he caused. Obviously what he did was truly horrendous but him using the pain is just mesmerising. Especially that final 90 second flurry where he seemingly let's all the anguish take him.
OMG! I have not heard this song in a long time and have never seen this live version. Totally amazing singer and musician. Is he still recording as not heard from him in a while?
Matt is amazing with so many hits, Lonely Boy, Miracle Love, Made of Stone, Belly side up, to name a few...I'm sure you will enjoy more of what Matt has to offer
The Triple J like a version have some BRILLIANT live versions of some songs. Aurora does some excellent stuff with them. Great for some nice quality live music.
Very VERY unique!! If I had to attempt to describe him to someone I would say if Dave Matthew had a son who took great notes or guidance and took it to the next level with just an acoustic. Very Nice! Thanks Bethany and all who recommended!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
For those wondering, the reason the emotion in this performance is so real.... is because it *IS* real. Unfortunately the true story behind the lyrics doesn't paint him in a very good light. He slept with his friend's girlfriend. That's why he's "fucked up by the blame". The "brother" in this song is not his literal brother, but his close friend. He betrayed his friend in the worst way anyone could possibly betray their "brother". The emotion is raw as hell. As terrible as the story is, I think it makes this performance even more powerful, when you know the context and meaning. 😢😢
I have a lot less respect for him now. I know this is the reality of the situation and there's nothing he can do about it. To think that he found fame from this single because of how he felt, even though he wasn't the victim, and he profited off it. It makes me a bit sick for his friend.
This is from Like a Version. Live on Australian radio each week. An artist does an original and a cover. Take a look at Denzel Curry's cover of Bulls on Parade. Ridiculous energy!!
