    From the video:
    1:09 Find a place that's appropriate for your area and accessible for your supplies: Big doors, no stairs, enough space
    2:15 Buy ready to fruit blocks, avoid growing from cultures at the beginning to start your operation faster, and ease the learning curve avoiding the frustration that might came from it
    2:50 Start in a temporary growth space, like Tents
    4:00 Get to a local producer and get the ready to fruit blocks (estimated price 20-25$ per 10lb block) (the starting margins wont be great, but you'll be growing the mushrooms almost immediately
    5:15 Get exposure: like in craiglist or your local equivalent, or maybe the farmers market, where you can sell your harvest.
    5:40 As you grow more familiar with the process you could increase your profit margins, by buying grainspawn and colonizing your own substrate. This could give you a profit of 10-12$ per 10lb block
    6:05 As your profits grow you might want to invest on a sterilizer, and he recommends the Bubba Barrel Steamers (3k approx)
    7:05 Another thing to consider at this point is a flowhood (3k approx) (NOT MENTIONED ON THE VIDEO, but Fan filter units might give you a more affordable equipment, like less than 1k while you gather money for a better one).
    7:40 This will substantially increase your margins if you are able to sterilize and inoculate your own
    8:00 At this point some operations stall their profit margins at 10-12$ per 10lb Block. Cause its easy to buy the grainspawn, inoculate, and move to fructification and then selling it to restaurants or markets. But in order to get to the next tier of profits, like 20$ per 10lbs block, you're gonna need to make your OWN grainspawn, which has a lot of new logistics and requires more time lead time for production and have the added risk of contamination if you don't have proper conditions and sterilization. But this could make you scale up your operation to get to the 100k per year: by producing 100 blocks per week at 20$ profit per block that's 8000$ per month.
    10:00 This stage is considerably more labor intensive than when you just started buying the ready to fruit blocks, but the increased margins are the reward for it. At this point you could hire help, or perhaps growing seasonally and use the time between crops to really clean your operation and get a break to avoid the burnout
    10:40 At this point you could add new products to increase the value of your operation, like mushroom seasonings, dried mushrooms, grow kits, or even become the guy who sell ready to fruit blocks/grainspawn/cultures

    "Maine Cap N Stem" has colonized blocks, minimum block order is 20 of one strain, for $9.00 per block. I live close enough to them to drive to their facility so I cannot speak about the shipping cost. Like you mentioned Gary this is a great way to get started and build up the client base first, which to me is the hardest part, and have a rather small investment initially and then work yourself into the front end of the business if that's what you want to do.

      yes! You are lucky to live near by it is definitely an advantage although you would need to account for drive time, gas, wear and tear etc. which there are apps now for business tracking expenses! This is definitely the way to start these days

      @@FreshfromtheFarmFungi Hi Gary and David, do you have an idea of the average price for colonized block in USA?
      Im europeean and the price here is around 400 to 1000 euros per tonne ( equal to 200 to 500 dollars per long tonnes for you).
      Gary talked about 20/25 dollars per 10 pound bag. but sounds expensive for important volume.

    Seems like a small time mushroom farmer buying blocks would barely break even. With farming becoming more popular, the competition would be producing mushrooms for far less than you could. Am I missing something?

    Sage advice here, along with your Pizza Analogy Overcrowded market video. Defo possible for people to carve their own unique niche and work collectively to spread the grower network, with ones own slant, to cater for the demand.

    I picked this up as a hobby around September of last year, and finally have about 20 blocks of Lions Mane going that I started from LC. Now just need to post up at the farmers market.
    Great video man, definitely wouldn't recommend people buying ready-to-fruit blocks however as you're probably only going to get around 15-20$ per block yield max anyways so buying a block for 20-25$ wouldn't be very practical from a profit standpoint.

      awesome! My advice is don’t “chase the x” let the mushroom find the oxygen it will produce better fruits and next time cut it a little earlier so it wont start pinning in the bag 👍 you will figure it out

    Very cool video, i started trying to sell all in one mushroom grow bags on Amazon and etsy that i made myself but it seems like that market is pretty much taken over, and i don't have the money to advertise myself. I could've waited to actually sell before production but the shipping time has to be pretty fast.. Im very interested to hear about the scheduling and amount you have to have ready, perhaps i can still make use of all my premade bags sitting around. Do you have an estimate of when that video will release? Thanks and love the videos!! 😁🍄

    I have a question regarding the Bubbas Barrels, they are described as not built to sterilize grain spawn since the barrel does not build pressure. Can you comment on that and tell us if you use it for grain sterilization?

    • @FreshfromtheFarmFungi
      @FreshfromtheFarmFungi  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes this is true - We use pressure cookers (15psi/250F) for our grains and run the barrels for bulk only. Some farms say they get away with grain spawn but for me there were always inconsistencies

    I was considering growing mushroom in my garage but the issue I have is there are no windows for ventilation what's your advice on that ?

    • @FreshfromtheFarmFungi
      @FreshfromtheFarmFungi  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you feel comfortable and you own the house, maybe there is way to vent through another opening/doorway or cut through an exterior wall? Also, consider making a temporary wall the height of one of the panels for the garage door and vent through that and close the door up to the height of this temporary wall. It is extremely important to have air flow and vent out spores or it will be very difficult to have any sort of success and can be bad for your health (high CO2 levels, high spore load are not good to breathe). Maybe try growing in vitro as well if these options are not feasible (pioppino and chestnut in bags, reishi in bags, cordyceps in jars etc.)

    I did learn a lot from his old videos but I hate to say this....The mushroom market os so flooded he has to resort to selling TH-cam premium and patreon amazon affiliate and there ready fruiting blocks, merchandise and book on there website. He says what he did in the past as if its going to work in 2024. Maybe find a state that's not flooded or monopolized like i have a problem with in las Vegas and LA. The west coast is for big money companies now. There is no longer room for the mom and pop mushroom shops. maybe he should sell all them gold necklaces. i know it sucks but growing mushroom is a lot of labor and money. the cost of supplies for growing mushroom art getting cheaper. :( I think if everyone grows for them self and stops buying from money hungry companies would be best. :( sorry but this is the truth I'm going through.

      the local market largely decides who succeeds and fails. Here in Denver there is a large market for fresh whole mushrooms - I know of 10 or more farms here all succeeding. Create your own niche and you will not be competing against everyone. These techniques still work and people have paved the way for faster innovation- The Future looks bright for mushroom farmers 🙏🏻🍄❤️

      @@FreshfromtheFarmFungi For sure you are correct but its the big investors that are paying millions for equipment, advertising and celebrities to push the little guys out that work hard from the start. Even paying the little guys for a consultation on how to grow them throwing them to the curb after promises where made. Its not friendly competition capitalism its big corporation capitalism that want to control the market.

      Im sure lions mane and some of the more specialty mushrooms (maitake, king trumpet, beech) can get close to that when you sell direct to consumers
