Swiss Alpenflage vs US Woodland Camouflage Test

  • In this video, the effectiveness of Swiss Alpenflage is tested against US Woodland camouflage in the American South in winter. Alpenflage is distinct because of its unusual use of the color red. So does it only work in an autumn environment with copious amounts of red leaves, or does it perform decently in the setting of this video? Give your opinions in the comments section.

    At the end of the video you basically summed up what I observed. Past a certain distance, you really can't see the red in the alpenflage at all, and it actually looks brown which blends in well with the surroundings.

    Both patterns are effective. Alpenflage is better for the short distance, because its segments are relative small. And Woodland is better for the long distance, due to large segments. In my opinion; every forest camouflage pattern performs well enough, so it is a matter of personal choice.
    I used Woodland in the Eiffel region of Germany during the 90's for wild camping. I never got caught by a forest ranger.

    Alpenflauge is best for Fall/Winter where vegetation is brown.
    Woodland camouflage has alot of green, it will be better for spring/summer.

    Alpenflage is surprisingly effective. The eye-catching red stops catching the eye as it moves away and works with the color spectrum to trick your eye. It's rather elaborate, though, and uses a complex pattern of seven colors. Woodland camouflage uses simpler pattern of four colors. The tan caught my eye as you moved closer.

    2 years later. WOW. I think that Alpenflage is a very good camo, but the Woodland was better in the sunny day while in the overcast both work at the same level... but I think the Woodland performed a little bit better. The woodland not only has a small pattern like the Alpenflage but also has a bigger patter of lights and shadows that makes it perform better in both cases.

      The old BDUs did too, but you had to be careful about what kind of detergent you washed them; no color brighteners, and you didn't want to starch them, even pressing and starching was required. But I've heard that some, not me, kept a specific set of BDUs just for the field that never got starched and pressed.

    Both pretty good although for fall hunting weather and in the video it looks like the redish alpenflage slightly wins. German flecktarn would be great for fall hunting weather too. Not sure if you tested it much but I have heard that digital comes work great up close but at further distances look like one solid color which actually draws the eye much more than clearly separated patterns like dpm, flecktarn, or that pimping Belgian camo. Any thoughts? Cheers

      @Viking Sharia
      O. K. But I am a Czech. Leibermuster provides makro/mikro camouflage. The whole idea behind the Leibermuster was: Patterns, that are effective at longer distances and break up the outline of the human body, lose much of their effectivenes at short distances. And vice versa: Patterns, effective at close distances, turn into one solid colour at longer distances, thus losing the properties and advantages of multicolour camouflage. Plus, the intended camo should have been effective in IR spectrum too. Leibermuster succedes in overcoming the makro/mikro camouflage dilema, while Woodland fails to do so. Leibermuster was copied not only by Swiss, but also by early Bundeswehr, Spanish army, and, since the WW2 in Europe ended in Czechoslovakia, thus making the German troops here the main users of this very last camo pattern, the Czechoslovak army copied Lwibermuster too. While woodland was used primarily by the u.s. vasal states, lacking their own capacity and expertise, needed for development of sophisticated camouflage pattern. Thats why I wrote what I wrote.

      @@jankorinek2397 I was just joking around man but I appreciate you explaining your point. Do you think in my tests, Alpenflage beats woodland close and far away or do you think the distance needs to be greater to really demonstrate that?

      The point is: Anybody can see and figure it out himself, that closing the distance would affect woodland effectivenes in a negative way, and increasing the distance would make the woodland concept more and more justifiable. On the other hand, Leibermuster is much more inert to these distance games. Thanks for your video anyway.
