    Is the Swiss Alpenflage Poncho a stand-alone wet weather system? I've been working in the rain a lot in my forestry career and I can tell you that the Swiss Poncho will not keep you dry as a stand alone system. No poncho will keep you 100% dry as a stand alone system. Poncho's will keep you partially dry but your extremities will be sopping wet. I use the system when carrying a pack sack and a belt order (as in this video), ground sheet, firewood tarp, etc... The applications are wide and this poncho meets my criteria for it's rugged construction, quality waterproof materials and camo pattern. I say "Don't buy one - buy two". The cost of modern hunting clothing and equipment is tremendous. Save yourself some money and seriously consider surplus military clothing. It is field expedient, durable and a lot easier on your wallet. I hope you enjoy the video and as always - MAPLE LEAF UP!

    if you hunt with a Taz-83, go with your k31 not a Mosin :)

      I wish I had a K-31... I believe that the SIG SG 540 would have been the rifle in service at the time though.... In either case I agree - I need a K31!!!!!!

      Riflechair In that Time(+- 1987), we were staring to replace the STGW57(Sig510) With the STGW 90(Sg 550). The 540 is just the predecessor.

      K 31 is an amazing rifle. I got a 1939 K31 and it is a flipping tack driver. The bolt is smoother than 90% of modern bolts and the straight pull is amazing. I consistently get under 1 moa at 100 yards. Just one of them rifles that just feels right as well...I've even whacked a 9 inch gong at 300 yards a fee times. Amazing rifle.

      @@Kman31ca I've always liked them myself. There are 2 minor 'point's' of suck to the K31 though....it has a stock that's made to fit Elves, and the stripper clips aren't very good.

    Good video.
    I find that this is not so much a Poncho as it is a Rain Cape. If you approach it's use in that way it works fantastic.

    i HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO ASK, HOW TO YOU CARE FOR YOUR RIFLE BEFORE AND AFTER HUNTING IN SUCH A DOWNPOUR? tHANKS

    • @camoman132
      @camoman132 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dry down every part , run rag through barrel , light oil every part , slow dry , oil moderately heavy, store rifle.

    • @tomhickman1006
      @tomhickman1006 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can also use car paste wax, do not rub off.
      This will repell the water.
      You can also seal the barrel with electrical tape, it will pop off when you shoot.
      This will keep your rifle from rusting during your hunt.
      When you get back home in a week or two.
      Strip down the rifle and clean off the wax and oil the rifle.

      I typically take the whole thing apart and wipe all moisture off and use some kind of cleaner that displaces water like gunscrubber on every part and I will let it sit inside, in the air conditioning under a fan to dry thoroughly and then oil every part. I also use those cotton mop brushes for your rifle to wipe the moisture out of the bore, use gun scrubber to displace water and some patches. It works very well for me.

    Just saw the price on that Helle Hanson rain gear- damn! Is it really worth that much? I suppose you wouldn't be wearing it if it didn't work, but what perks make it so great? I'd love to get something that doesn't stand out too much in town, but works for all-around use in the woods & packs down small. I was looking at the Snugpack Patrol Poncho, but it has varying reviews.

    I got dis one, payed 9 Swiss Francs for it. Bt i prefor de Taz 90 , or Camo 09. De Color Red works only in autum

    • @gamramjam535
      @gamramjam535 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Martin Spörri it works much better in urban terrain as the TAZ90 or TAZ09.
      De TAZ90 isch viel zdunkel, zu wenig verschachtel und viel zviel grüän. Leider. Schnallets aber in Bern nöd, dass sich do i de letschta 10 Quantäsprüng to hend. Penncote Greenzone wäre echti Altenative.

    • @gamramjam535
      @gamramjam535 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      On loong distance look the TAZ90 dark geen/black.
      The red one more brown/dark grey.
      In urban terrain you have more brown and grey elements then green or black.
      But both are not perfect for urban terrain.

    Wouldn't you get hot (and sweaty) wearing both a poncho AND raingear? It might be OK if you are taking things fairly easy, but for hiking purposes?

    • @Riflechair
      @Riflechair  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      For full on hiking over a long distance I'd still likely wear just one or the other. However this video was taken in October in a slow stalking and / or garrison type of duty so for comfort both is fine. Remember it was WET and COLD. If in warm rains you're going to get wet either way whether its from the rain or by sweating. That's my 2 cents. The poncho allows a lot of air movement.

    True waterproof packs (lacking in frames, though). Used to be available at mec.ca, but don't seem to be atm.

      Thanks GM4 - appreciate the link. If you really want waterproof then yeah... You've basically identified the only option. I've actually used these systems a lot and they work - and they're way more durable than I ever thought they would be. I've been using one of these bags to house my chainsaw bucking pants, bar oil, fuel mix, spare chains, file ,wedges and saw wrench for years. Used and abused and never leaked. I'm a believer. Thanks for the post - you obviously have a shared experience. I didn't know they had a mid-sized pack system. I've only seen the freighter packs (HEAVY).

      Riflechair Happy to, sir. Looked at them & tried them on in the store a few years back & kind of like them, but did not "pull the trigger". Felt they would be great for special applications, but not a very good all-round pack, unless you commute on a jet-ski or something. ;)
      Am enjoying your vids, regards G.M.
