  • 1985 35' Senator Sundeck $85,000. Slow 'M'Ocean has good sight lines and a high bow.
The teak hand rails and toe caps are varnished.
The teak interior has beautiful joinery that the Taiwanese boatyards from this era are known for.

There are over 60+ brands of Asian Trawlers like this that are probably built in 3 or 4 shipyards in China / Taiwan- On many of these the shipyard build the hull then the hulls were farmed out to local familiy shops for finishing out the interior - that's why no two are exactly the same. The stamped bamboo design and arched doors are common. When dealers in the US ordered these boats in the 70s - 80s, they were never sure what they were going to get in terms of floorplan or finish details. Some of the boats are really OK, some not, some pretty bad and leaky. All pretty fun to look at though - and there are varying degrees of builder's skill in each. If the owner wanted to sell this boat, I'd say the price point would be at 40k...maybe 45k. It's got some pretty bad joinery near the front, and that rough box for the bathroom sink is a joke. Thanks for the video!!

Thanks for commenting. That’s crazy the dealers didn’t know exactly what they weee getting. And they are all so different this makes them the perfect boat for me to focus on with my channel. Comment anytime. I have a few coming up. Let me know if there’s a good website to lean more about this era of boats.

@@HarborYachtTours The failing upper ceiling panels & trim in the v-berth area, for starters - could be deck leaks too as these boats have very common problems with wet hulls, decks and cabins. The bathroom, the door bottom edges, etc...Ugggh. . From a distance the interior is sort of OK, but don't look too close....It's not a reflection on the owner, it's just that's how these boats tend to age. Some age really well...others not so much. They really last much better in a covered slip.

@@HarborYachtTours By the way - get yourself a Pinless Moisture Meter when you're walking around one of the trawler (or any wood interior). They are not expensive. You just set the meter for hardwood or softwood and hold it up against some of the interior woodwoork. These are not a perfect way to test but you can usually tell right away where a window or door has been leaking and you'll see the moisture content show over 30 -35%%. A dry wood interior might be around 15% or below, depending on humidity - maybe higher or lower is normal for your area. In the PNW we see dry wood at around 15% or lower. These gadgets may not work very well on fiberglass, but you can compare different areas. They do NOT replace a good marine survey with a pin-type moisture meter.

We looked at a new 35' Senator Sundeck in North Carolina in 1986. We ended up getting a new 1986 CT Sundeck; we loved our CT (w/Ford Lehman 135 SP) but the Senator is a 'bigger' 35' boat; better lay out, and some better features. The major thing wrong with the 1986 35' Senator we almost bought was that all (yes ALL) of the stainless steel (on a NEW boat) was very rusty, and the boat was very 'top-heavy'.... The CT was a much better sea boat..By the way, that is not a hull number, nor a tally.... it is the Fed. Documentation number. Senator did not make that many boats.

We looked at that boat in fall of 2021 in Little River SC. That is when covid had the prices inflated. They were asking I think 64,500 and it needed a bottom job per a recent survey. They did the bottom job and raised the price to 69500, I think. I don't know the sale price. I think I offered them 40k....But after 3 years of looking at old trawlwers, I wish we had bought it. It was the nicest of all we looked at. Never thought we would see it again. Hell of a lot of boat for the size.

I gave You a 'Thumbs Up' for you review. The drooping OSB in the forward cabin gives me Major pause. A ceiling drooping shows water leaks, and there was 'wear' water stains under the venting in the lounge, even though the floor was freshed,I have to say No.Thank you though. The 'Storm damaged' for this price was so much better maintained.

You mist two very important points. When you were on the bridge. The upper radar Arch has hinges to drop it down. Very important if you would be doing the Great loop with that vessel. You are so missed the bridge cushions which were suspended in the forward birth. They looked very attractive and in very nice shape. All in all a very well maintained boat. The engine room really showed well. The only downside for me was the heads. Everything else was close to perfect.
