I take a look back at Mario's mobile debut: Super Mario Run. Edited by Sam Essig and Scott Wozniak Main Channel: @ScottTheWoz Twitter: / scottthewoz Facebook: / scottthewoz Instagram: / scottthewoz
I feel like WarioWare would make for a great mobile title. Just short little mini-game blasts that you can kill a little time with. And if they need to do gross money stuff they can sell game packs for like $2 that have a bunch of games in it because they'd all be micro-games. Maybe even include the DIY micro-game creator
I used to play WarioWare: Twisted (the one on GBA using gyro controls) using an emulator on my phone. It felt like it was made for smartphones, I’d be happy if they straight up ported it.
I feel like Mario Run would have a lot more replay value if one of the modes had an endless run where you need to collect as many coins as possible. Structured sort of like the final boss, it’s Subway Surfers/Temple Run but you move vertically opposed to horizontally. Swiping the screen up or down to move to layers.
I would play the shit out of that. Maybe they could add the spin from galaxy as an attack or powerups to make things more interesting. Edit: I typed this before remembering crash bandicoot on the run was a thing that existed, and it also had a spin attack. It would work kinda like that.
I think Remix 10 was just as good of a solution, at least from my experience playing the game. It had a definitive beginning and end, but it was extremely addicting trying to do a perfect run each time, and I sometimes ended up playing it for an hour or more straight.
I remember the biggest criticism given to this game was that it was too expensive compared to other games, mainly the Rayman runner games which as you said were pretty much the same concept and were like 3 times cheaper.
@ that too.... for some reason people are too scared to admit when a Nintendo property geniunely makes a bad game, let a lone an incredibly mediocre one
@@bluebosnian I think they mean that Woz videos have become too overproduced now, losing a bit of that groundedness that the older videos had. Scott's Stash being the side/low effort channel is less filtered and more of the "real" Scott can shine through, which some people prefer over the Woz videos.
Mario Run is the only mobile game I actually play. Its great for quick, simple plays, and re-playable. I bought the full version and wish more companies experimented with the idea of a trial, or a one time purchase with no ads or microtransactions.
So far it seems like the only mobile games that can get away with it are the digital board games, since most of those seem to be of the 'pay up front, or get the base game free and pay for expansion' model.
@@violakazooie no it's not hard to understand. It's literally saying "but we are only ripping you off of little money, what's the big deal?" That's what I call bullshit.
If I recall correctly, the Carpet is actually on top of a table. He's standing up to film these (frankly I know I wouldn't film so much content like this if I had to lay on the floor to film it).
I didn't buy this when it originally came out, but one day I saw it on sale on the App Store for $5 and I thought "Yeah, I'll hit purchase now." Pretty glad I did, the game is fairly fun and the amount of content in the game was surprising (even if most of that content is just replaying the levels with different goals).
_Super Mario Run_ is probably most important historically for the unprecedented success of shareholders to put pressure on Nintendo's higher-ups. I imagine they had the exact case you describe in mind: they saw Nintendo as leaving money on the table from app impulse buyers.
12:05 Just to clarify, there are actually three more unlockable screens for kingdom building (accessible south of the screens that Scott displayed) that unlock via rainbow bridges that you can get from the store once you have enough Toads in your kingdom (earned via the "Toad Rally" mode).
I remember loving Super Mario Run back in 2016... The first four levels that is! I didn't have any money available to spend on that kinda stuff, so I played and replayed those first levels tens of times... until I got bored and forgot about it completely
In order to record these videos, do you think that Scott: 1. Sits on his knees, 2. Lays on his stomach, or 3. Sits on a chair and extends his arms to the floor like Inspector Gadget
8:22 the rumor I've always heard for why Nintendo's mobile games are mostly in portrait mode is because they're made for busy Tokyo commuters who have one hand holding on to the handrail on the subway and the other hand on their phone
I actually went all out with this game and tried my best to get EVERYTHING. All the characters, all the colored coins, all the decorations. All I’m missing are a few high-end decorations.
I'm ashamed to say I never went beyond the free content on Mario Run, yet a few years later I spent a total of around EUR 150 on the Mario Kart Tour gacha bs.
as bored as i'd became of super mario run, i gotta hand it to you for praising it even a little bit. back in my last year of middle school, even tho i could never (and would never) pay $10 to unlock extra stuff for it, this game had its moments in the limelight and i liked it for what it was
Super Mario Run is my favorite Nintendo mobile game, mostly because you pay for it and you don’t need to deal with all the bs of other mobile games The game itself it’s fine, it’s fun, it’s a decent challenge
My 3 year-old son is just now getting into Mario after the watching the movie, so I got this game for him to play around with. He's pretty bad at it (he's a toddler after all), but its simple enough that he doesn't lose too horribly, and he absolutely loves the dumb thing.
Dr Mario World was easily my favorite of the Nintendo mobile games. Solid puzzle game that I miss so much. I was able to super far into the game without spending any money.
i’m so pissed i only found out about it after it was gone. Dr. Mario was my fave Gameboy game growing up and i was freaking addicted. maybe it’s a blessing i never knew about the mobile version because i would have lost so many hours of my life XD
Scott on the main screen of the kingdom edited you can swipe down and there is an extra area down there, you didn’t showcase it there so I’m wondering if you knew about it.
I personally think SMR is a pretty good time for being a mobile game. It’s actually decently repayable, with Toad Rally pitting you up against the shmoves of others and unlocking buildings in the shop for your kingdom, and Remix 10 sending you through a random assortment of 10 small levels in a row. It’s a pretty simple game, and compared to other mobile games it might not be as expansive, but a simple 2D Mario on your phone is still pretty good. And hey, 10 bucks for the whole thing as opposed to ads and micro transactions is pretty alright compared to many other games on the mobile market.
I remember when this game came out. I had it on my IPad because my parents refused to get me a phone until a few years later. I bought the full version and it was pretty awesome! I still play it today… working on maxing out all my toads!
I still have Mario Run and Mario Kart tour in my phone. I played the others but got bored and uninstalled them. I think that Nintendo was experimenting with the pricing seeing if people would play for a game. I think 10 bucks is good enough for a game that is complete. I think is absurd how people whine for spending 10 dollars on a game but they don't care spending 100 times more in microtransactions. I doubt will see a Mario Run 2. I doubt Nintendo will release mobile games anymore. They did these to survive during the Wiiu/3DS to Switch transition and it worked. They haven't announced new ones and even some were discontinued.
It is unfortunate that people weren't that receptive to higher priced mobile games. That forces games on mobile devices to do all of the monetization stuff. Ironically, I bet a lot of people are perfectly okay with spending far more than $10 on microtransactions in free games. Also - I see the price of premium games on phones has gone up. Wingspan is $9.99. Super Mario Run was maybe ahead of its time with its price.
It wasn't the price really (although it contributed a lot), but rather the complexity. I learned when it comes to smartphone games, the simplier it is, the wider the playerbase is. Sega had a similar issue with Sonic Runners, the mobile endless runner made by the core Sonic Team at Sega and marketed as the next big thing to Sonic. It was a great endless runner that had a lot of effort out into it. But the always online, menus, loadings screens, gameplay mechanics and leveling system were too much for casual audiences, who gravitated more towards Sonic Dash, the bog standard temple run reskin made by Hardlight. Sega then shut down Sonic Runners and made Sonic Forces Speed Battle, which was a reskin of Dash, and it was a bigger success.
Miitomo, Mario Run, and Pokémon GO were legendary for the very reason that they exist. 2016 really was the year of change. Nintendo never made mobile games before, and they did 3 times in 1 year
I love super Mario run I love how the different characters are unique I love how they made Daisy really playable in a non spinoff platformer. Especially before Wonder ruined that I love how each level has different ways to play it too it’s a great game that gets sleep on and I really hope they port it to Switch or something

Knew this video had to come eventually, I still play this game sometimes, the updates were nice but I wish it actually got more levels and characters. I wish they didn't abandon it, it's got real potential
Remix 10 was awesome and so was the fact it came with Daisy as a playable character (iirc you need to reach world 10-13 in Remix 10 to even unlock her)
I play it daily for the platinum points. It's a fun little game. When I downloaded it happened to be on sale for $4.99, and I thought that was a good price. I told myself I would play the free levels and then decide. I hadn't realized $4.99 was a sale price. Of course once I played the free levels, the sale had ended. If/when it goes on sale again I'll be getting it. Yes there are only six worlds but played in bit sized bits just finishing all of world 1 took me a couple of weeks.
I think its the opposite for Pokemons sales. Pokemon Go was successful because of the Pokemon games. Pokemon Sword and Shield would have been the most sold regardless of Pokémon go.
This game is really fun. I found doing 100% a fun little challenge, Toad Rally and Remix 10 are fun to do as well. It can get repetitive but they are always fun modes to go back go after some time not playing. The game is very expensive though, although the game does go on sale every now and then so if you were to get it do it then.
I got Super Mario Run for my 4-year-old son last year and he loved it. It was easier for him to play at the time than the Switch games. Now he’s more interested in 3D World and the other games on Switch, but as an entry point, Super Mario Run was a good choice.
This was a magical experience I’d love to see them do a part 2 and get all the artists together and share every step of the process so the artists can see the inspiration and celebrate each other
I played this back in the day. It was fine. I was actually happy at the payed model it used, since you could demo the game free, then purchase later if you did like it. If you didn’t like it, then you didn’t lose anything from trying it. Probably the biggest thing I absolutely hated though was the simplified one touch controls. Yeah it made the game easy to play, but it absolutely ruined any sort of intentional, precision platforming. I died/ lost way too many times because of the lack of control.
Not to he that guy, but I feel like that's a skill issue, the only times I died in the game was due too going after the special coins. If I just went to beat a level, I feel like the game is too easy
I liked Dragalia Lost. I really wish they made a Switch game of the IP or one switch successor. Its a shame for that IP to be gone forever and never be in home console.
And One More thing !!!!! It woulda been cool if they made a Mario mobile game with Pokémon go features . Like instead of catching Pokémon you have to break bricks , collect coins , meet people in public , defeat goombas etc etc like they could implemented the VR …
I bought Mario run ages ago and still have not beaten it, got stuck on the ghost level in world 5 but I still think the game was solid fun and well worth the $10 entry fee!
I had a good bit of fun with this game when I used to play it I would play it back in class because it came out while I was in high school it was good to pass the time
The Fire Emblem mobile game is interesting. Its still doing really well and keeping the games in the minds of players. It also makes a metric ton of money especially compared to every other Nintendo mobile game.
It's a gacha game with appealing anime characters and waifus. Makes sense why it does so well, plus the fact that the gameplay is 100% Fire Emblem but optimized for mobile play, very satisfying and fun.
This game may not be super deep for an adult, but my daughter absolutely loves it. The 1-touch controls and short levels are perfect for a young ones first game. Plus, the fact that there no in-game purchses means I dont have to worry about ads and such messing things up.
Back in like 2017 I got like REALLY into toad rally (One of the games side modes) And I got like really good at it. That's how I spent like 90% of my time in the game.
❗️I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Star Music in this game. The ONLY SmartPhone Games I play now (on my Z-Flip3 and now Z-Flip5) is 'PokéMon Go!' and 'Super Mario: Run'. However, I did love 'Miitomo' as I LOVE the Mii characters. 8:44 "Who the hell bought an iPhone..." FULLSTOP? Samsung's newest models are kicking 256-Bits out of iOS.
when the Mario movie was coming out, they slashed the price in half to $5. If they launched it at that cost, it probably would've done way better for what it was offering
i used to be super addicted ot that game for a year straight! This was the best version of an endless runner game i swear!!!!!! i hate that it was an endless runner but still
I will never get over that Super Mario RUN and Sonic JUMP existed at the same time
Almost like they swapped universes or something XD

I’d love to see them do a part 2 and get all the artists together and share every step of the process so the artists can see the inspiration and celebrate each other
I still open it up from time to time and play. And I have to say, the ad for this game is one of the best Nintendo has made.
I'm still salty about having to pay for extra stages. They are STAGES. Not characters, not structures, they are stages.
But you can't unlock most stuff without the stages anyways
But i get that's not what you mean
The fact that you mentioned Rayman Jungle Run, made me happy.
16:08 rare occurrence of something Scott said ageing like milk now that Mario Kart 8 deluxe has dlc characters.
This game controls super well and mario moves slow enough that you can paragraph most stuff
I liked Dragalia Lost. I really wish they made a Switch game of the IP or one switch successor. Its a shame for that IP to be gone forever and never be in home console.
I had so much fun completing this game and collecting everything
felt very weird seeing my model IPhone shone in the ad at the begining.
I enjoyed this game a lot, it was super fun for 5 minutes at a time.
"You haven't played Super Mario Run? You have to play Super Mario Run, is just ok!"
I still play Mario run and I love it, I wouldn't pay for it but for free the remix levels that take tickets are fun and varied.
You can scroll down as well as left and right on the kingdom builder mode for more space.
I literally COMPLETELY forgot about this phone game until you posted! Thanks scott
And One More thing !!!!! It woulda been cool if they made a Mario mobile game with Pokémon go features . Like instead of catching Pokémon you have to break bricks , collect coins , meet people in public , defeat goombas etc etc like they could implemented the VR …
i picked the game back up a few months ago and its been a fun time like a plain bag of chips, rather basic but still nice to have every now and again
On the map, where you can build, try to slide your screen up and see a brand new land thing with space you can build on
Unironically enjoyed this game. Friend bought it for me when I got 3 black coins on 1-3 for him. Was a great free (for me) game
I bought Mario run ages ago and still have not beaten it, got stuck on the ghost level in world 5 but I still think the game was solid fun and well worth the $10 entry fee!
I had a good bit of fun with this game when I used to play it I would play it back in class because it came out while I was in high school it was good to pass the time
Feels like Scott's channels swapped their main purpose in a day lmao
wow when the Miitomo music started playing I got hit with a little dose of nostalgia
There are like, four other unlockable kingdom screens. Shows how much effort Scott put into his kingdom! 😝
You summed it up in the beginning. It’s fine. I may even download again cause YOOOUUUUU reminded me of it lol
The Fire Emblem mobile game is interesting. Its still doing really well and keeping the games in the minds of players. It also makes a metric ton of money especially compared to every other Nintendo mobile game.
Because it’s fun
It's a gacha game with appealing anime characters and waifus. Makes sense why it does so well, plus the fact that the gameplay is 100% Fire Emblem but optimized for mobile play, very satisfying and fun.
The remix 10 music constantly plays in my head. I couldn’t tell you why
Modern Daisys first appearance in a mainline mario platformer game
Super mario run is one of my favorite 2D super marios
People on mobile are like backwards, they don't want to pay 10$ once for a full game, but they have no issues paying 2000$ a day in micro transactions
when you mentioned lep's world 2 so many forgotten memories came back
This game may not be super deep for an adult, but my daughter absolutely loves it.
Should've been permanent tbh
Mitomo is really nostalgic for me it came out at a young age for me and I was so sad when it’s stopped working
i used to be super addicted ot that game for a year straight! This was the best version of an endless runner game i swear!!!!!! i hate that it was an endless runner but still
I remember playing Mario Run day one, not like I played it much
And also with Miitomo, I liked it a lot when the service was live.
Say what you will about the game, but the soundtrack is pretty fire (especially the Underground theme, it's so groovy)
I remember my friend wanting to play this game so badly and would check the App Store everyday just to see if Super Mario Run came out.
OH BOY A NEW EPISODE!
I played a DeNA game recently. Takt Op Symphony lol funny to see them in scott video
