Similar story at my school too. Everyone was playing during every class and lunch and then boom, 2 days later news stories come out about the lack of online play and gatcha mechanics and NOBODY touched it after that

mario kart tour becomes so much better when you look at it like a score attack game, rather than a racing game. i believe this game truly shines when you take advantage of the combo system by doing drifts, getting frenzies, and using items strategically. it definitely starts off slow at first, but when you build up a collection of high leveled kart parts and characters, it becomes way easier to keep and start combos, along with insane possibilities for frenzies, leading to some of the most addicting gameplay you can find out of a mobile game when you hit a score of like 30k or more. theres still a dedicated community for this game online and in-game even after content updates stopped and i wish more people would give it a chance
that's exactly it! it is so good to use items in a strategic way while taking an optimal path around the track, taking advantage at each drift and trick to build a long, and sometimes non-stop, combo. the ranked is also something that takes the most of it, making you playing it again and again to get the perfect run combo-wise and specially frenzy-wise, making you needing to get one coin frenzy/coinbox + another good one or even 2 coin frenzies (or even more if you're in a REALLY high tier), just so you can reach 1st to get all the prizes and win other real life players. and that is something that worked better with the gacha mechanic, imo. I'm a F2Player so I had to get good scores in order to get more rubies to pull more pipes or sometimes even emptying them (most of the times just to get the things I likes instead of the competitive better ones lol). I still however think that the removal of the gacha mechanic was the right step, but I think the ranked suffered a bit from it.
Agreed, I hate the online multiplayer. It doesn't seem to matter what I do it's impossible to win as its so laggy. Don't know if that because I'm in the uk and no one in the uk plays it as an MP? Only played half a dozen races MP, I do enjoy the game and just completing the tour to gain characters, items etc and the ranked cup is good too

You're only getting it in mid positions, but only when the match has already been running for a bit, so much so that you'd be better off being in 1st place already (to get a coin frenzy or coin box frenzy). And you'll get a okay-ish amount of points and nice combo building, not something underwhelming but not really good too (and to get more points/actions you'll need to be futher back too...). Its frenzy sucks ass tho lol
It really was a monkeys paw when Nintendo gave us a Mario kart with a bunch of cool and long awaited characters, only for it to be the mobile version of it.

The fact that Dragalia Lost was a new IP that lasted almost 5 years with consistent support was pretty impressive. Almost as impressive as Dr. Mario World barely lasting 2 years.
Not to mention it barely had any advertising on the nintendo side outside of the nintendo mobile channel(which, tbh almost nobody in the nintendo community is checking that channel out of interest unless they play the mobile games on there) so the game was practically left to be carried on the backs of cygames

Mario kart tour has become my number one biggest “guilty pleasure” game over the last year or so. Ever since they removed the gacha mechanic it’s improved my enjoyment of the game a ton. Glad to hear someone like Scott finally acknowledging how much better the game has gotten!

Dragalia Lost was honestly my fav of the nintendo mobile games, tbh. I remember the story & cast being genuinely pretty good, and the crossover events were fun as well. I do think it's very funny how in a lot of ways the plot et al was basically a Fire Emblem game if it wasn't a strategy game, but honestly I thought it was fun. I'd love it if we got a de-mobile-ified version on switch sometime but yea that's not gonna happen lol
I would love if they made a offline version for the Switch. I wouldnt like for them to ignore such huge cast of amazing character and the unique world.
the game play was also very nice. Not your typical turn based gacha. Skip stones and changing game speed made grinding really easy too on top of them being generous with summons. Such a shame

I actually am a big mario kart tour player. I started playing in early 2020, before actual multiplayer was open to everyone (it was in beta for gold pass subscribers), and I have missed very little days since then. Yes, you heard me right, I've played the game almost every single day for 4 years straight. During those 4 years, I watched as the game evolved from a crappy game, to an actually good game. I remember back then the game was actually not the best, it was not very easy to get rubies, much less good drivers / karts / gliders, but it was fine. It was actually pretty fun watching the new trailer for each tour just to see what new things got added. Over time it actually got much much better. It got way easier to get rubies for free (in fact I get around 100 each tour), the controls got better, they added landscape mode to the game, but only in races, not the menus, and eventually removed the gatcha pipes from the game, or at least the main pipes. Yeah, there's still some gatcha pipes, but those pipes are completely free. The event token pipe that you use event tokens to fire the pipe (which you get during races, they're the green coins), the multiplayer pipe, which you earn fires from playing multiplayer, and some pipes as rewards for getting stars. Over the years, I've actually collected a massive collection of drivers, all without paying money. Ok, that's a lie, I did get the gold pass a couple times, but that was only the free trial (twice, somehow), and bought with gift card money. Other than that, I'm completely free to play. Oh, and contrary to what scott was saying, you do actually need skill in mario kart tour, and getting first does matter. You see, you earn points in the courses by doing pretty much any action, and you get more points by finishing first. It is hard to get a good amount of points without actdoing anything. Oh yeah, I'm also a mario kart tour dumper, as in, I dump the game files for others to use (such as extracting the music). I actually kind of tasked myself to play mkt every day until the game shuts down.

Appreciate you making this video, was a great watch especially since Mario Kart Tour doesn't get much video content anymore. I have always enjoyed this game, and of course it isn't without its faults; but what thing that we love truly comes without issues?
Great to see someone with influence giving this game a chance. Tour IS a great Mario Kart game, and there’s a whole community out there like myself who has been deep into it for 4 years. It involves a ton of strategy and and of course involves skill, you just have to think of it in a different way.
One of the strongest features that gets overlooked a lot I feel is the Weekly Ranking competition. You have to try and get the highest combined score on 3 tracks against 20 other real people at the same skill level as you. If you get a better score, you get more rewards and go to a higher skill level, if you get less, you get fewer rewards and level down. And sure you can pay to get rubies to do better at this, but it’s completely possible to do all of it with just your own skill and no paying, and you get rewarded with characters that would have cost money otherwise.
Yeah this is the exact thing that gets me to come back every tour. The points mechanic is outright addicting and trying to grind out a really high score is a lot of fun. I hope to see a scoring based system as a separate mode in a future Mario Kart game.
Exactly. My wife and I both play ranked every week. Sometimes not even playing the other tracks or online. Ranked is easily the best and most affecting part of this game

The five star system was really annoying for a WHILE because it required just way too many points and they sometimes felt impossible to achieve. And the cart parts gave point multipliers and some other bonuses which seem nessesary to get five stars. They since lowered the number of points tho (now it's too easy though...) And the horizontal mode really saved the game for me, made drifting for example way easier. That's why it's fitting that the screen is horizontal in the thumbnail

Most people don't know, that there's more in Tour than just mindless racing. There's always a strategy when it comes to resources. Sure, you can just buy and upgrade the most stuff. But the catch is, which item will get you the most coverage or is better suited for certain tracks. Also there's some skill (and rng) involved too. Like some driver items (Lucky Seven, Giant Banana) require different strategies. Wanna risk 2nd or 3rd place to get more combo actions or get lower score but getting the 1st place? The most fun in this is reaching higher scores (especially in ranked) without spending much on the upgrades. Kinda sad that most people don't consider it as the ninth mainline entry (aka MK9) only because it is on mobile. But there's so much potential in the future entries when it comes to things introduced in Tour like different track variants. Heck, even in the Booster Course Pass they created dynamic lap changed mainly for the Tour tracks.
I remember when Mario Kart Tour first launched. I was still in high school and our PE teacher was subbing in for a sick teacher. Even she was hyped about it and she just allowed the full class to play together and even then I remember it not being that good. Thank God they improved it
I’ve been playing this game since the Amsterdam Tour in 2022 and once they removed the pipe system for the shop system I even got the gold pass and it’s been so fun! $60 a year is fine for me when the game still changes every 2 weeks (1 if you care about ranked cups). Happy to see you shouting out how it’s changed, sucks it got better only after the game stopped introducing new content.
I think multiple costumes for each character should become a staple in the next Mario Kart game. Its just a nice quality of life thing to have a bunch of different outfits for your characters, plus they could take a lot of the designs directly from Tour. Not to mention the costumes could be something fun to grind for as unlockables
It would also help soften the blow for situations like Mario Kart 8, where instead of fan favorite characters people had been asking for, they added Pink Gold Peach or Tanuki Mario as seperate characters.
Guys, Scott knows Piranha Plant Cove is a new course. If you rewatch that part again you'll see he says along the lines of "new courses that aren't cities and remastered courses that haven't been remastered before" and then uses Sunset Wilds and Piranha Plant Cove as examples. He just said them in the wrong order.
Scott didn’t even mention the Mii suits. They are by far the best part of the game. Letting you play as yourself is boring in some other games, but all your Mii suits stack +10 points. They also have really good designs. If you sign on right now, you’ll see the Para-Biddybud Mii suit, which looks awesome.
Mii Suits were such a useless and greedy addition lol, they aren’t even worth the expensive amount of rubies. Don’t even get me started with the dogshit mii racing suit bots that are incredibly more annoying than a regular character. I’ve invested my resources in more optimal characters and the results were very successful.
@@theawesomeali8834 If you take them at face value they seem useless, but they're super valuable in the high tiers, especially if you have most or all of them. Pretty much every mii suit can score higher than non-mii plus skills like coin box and boomerang, and the miis who do have plus skills can achieve crazy high scores. The +10 BP do a lot more than add just 10 points. A level 6 triple cap non-mii gets 72 more points per action, but if you have all miis, a mii of same level and cap gets 104 more points per action. That's 32 more points per action over the non-mii, and you get a bigger score boost when you finish a race as well. You can score like 25% higher with a mii. CB and Boomerang miis are monsters. Some people have hit 100,000+ on Cookie Land with gold mii. I don't think I've seen a non-mii hit 80k.
One thing ive always wished with live-service games is that when they eventually die off they get converted to entirely-local/offline games Preserve them forever but never update/fix them

Yea I hate when mobile games do this, especially the games that actually don't require multiplayer to play, like there was this city builder type game called cartown streets that I loved playing, but then they shut it down completely instead of just making it a offline game when the game itself doesn't require multiplayer.
I love Mario Kart Tour. Ive been playing since release date. I always open it at least once a day for about 10-15 minutes and it's honestly the only mobile game I ever put time into other than Dragalia Lost when it was a thing.

Some games unfortunately have built-in checks to stop you from doing that. For example, that trick works for the mobile version of Plants vs. Zombies 1, but doesn't work for the mobile Classic Sonic games (it'll just give you a message saying you have to connect to the internet).
You could just pay for the ads free version. Games aren’t free to make. I’ve never really understood the pride that comes along with using Adblock. I’ve heard people lament the shutdown of sites/games they loved, while also talking about blocking ads. If you like stuff, you need to pay for it

Mario Kart Tour has the best selection of characters, karts, items, and tracks of the entire Mario Kart series (minus the grinding and difficulty of actually getting all the content). It looks good for a mobile game, and I’m glad people are giving it a bit more respect.
Excluding the original Mario Kart 8 DLC characters (Link, Villager, & Isabelle), the only playable characters from any of the Mario Kart games that aren’t in Tour are Honey Queen and ROB.

To be fair the pipe had a guarantee limit at 100 pulls or something. So it was possible to get that rare character for free, guaranteed, if you saved up.
I quite liked Dragalia Lost and probably would have played more if they hadn't shut it down. It wasn't the greatest game ever, but it was fun enough and a good way to spend a few minutes on a journey.

i was on a school trip when mario kart tour released and literally everyone in my class started playing it. we were supposed to look at art in museums, but we gathered on a bench or in the bus and all played mario kart tour. it was so fun!!
The only thing I truly miss from the early gatcha era of Mario Kart Tour, especially now that the game is essentially dead until it's finally taken offline, is how challenging some of the challenges were if you weren't spending money. One Tuesday night right before the end of a season, I played for hours because I was just missing the "use some amount of mushrooms dropped on the track" challenge and I didn't have any of the pilots that had the mushroom cannon. It's still a good time filler (although the 300 coin limit kinda makes it hard to want to spend more than 15 minutes a day unless you're a completionist) and the frenzies are fun, but the biggest thrill I feel these days is when I somehow don't get five stars even when using a level 1 pilot, kart and glider.
Funny thing is that MKT was never a bad game. The gacha mechanics were way less abusive than most of games of the genre, but peopl kept complaining about it without actually spending time with the game. Played for 2 years, never spent a single dollar on it and had a lot of fun.
Ah, yes, I remember I played this for like 2 races and deleted it. But the same goes for all of Nintendo's mobile games, except for Mario Run (which I actually played for quite a long time).
I've always liked this game lol. But the two defining factors outside of how you place in any race are driver and glider levels. Higher driver level increases chance of frenzy. Higher glider level increases the amount of time allowed in between combo actions. Even with the normal drivers you can get decent scores
I remember a point where tour only was announcing tours where they add a SNES track that didn't hype or the RMX tracks but after a point, BAM! Sunset Wilds? it returned into it's only announcing snes courses but outta nowhere, Choco Mountain, and it looked amazing for a mobile game it suddendly started getting Wii tracks after a whole year without them, more GBA courses that weren't Bowser Castles, more DS tracks, more GCN stuff, most of them probably because they were on wii, but still they loked really good for just being part of a mobile game, it also made Tour speculation more fun when the first wave of the booster course pass arrived, people analizing which tour tracks will get picked + the leaks made it feel like you got the whole puzzle solved

Mario kart tour has become my number one biggest “guilty pleasure” game over the last year or so. Ever since they removed the gacha mechanic it’s improved my enjoyment of the game a ton. Glad to hear someone like Scott finally acknowledging how much better the game has gotten!

Dragalia Lost was honestly my fav of the nintendo mobile games, tbh. I remember the story & cast being genuinely pretty good, and the crossover events were fun as well. I do think it's very funny how in a lot of ways the plot et al was basically a Fire Emblem game if it wasn't a strategy game, but honestly I thought it was fun. I'd love it if we got a de-mobile-ified version on switch sometime but yea that's not gonna happen lol
I would love if they made a offline version for the Switch. I wouldnt like for them to ignore such huge cast of amazing character and the unique world.
the game play was also very nice. Not your typical turn based gacha. Skip stones and changing game speed made grinding really easy too on top of them being generous with summons. Such a shame

A console version of Dragalia Lost is unironically my most wanted thing out of Nintendo right now, although I know how much of a long shot it is to become a real product.
I've loved tour since day 1, if you just don't spend the money on it, you can still have fun and progress really well.

I actually am a big mario kart tour player. I started playing in early 2020, before actual multiplayer was open to everyone (it was in beta for gold pass subscribers), and I have missed very little days since then. Yes, you heard me right, I've played the game almost every single day for 4 years straight. During those 4 years, I watched as the game evolved from a crappy game, to an actually good game. I remember back then the game was actually not the best, it was not very easy to get rubies, much less good drivers / karts / gliders, but it was fine. It was actually pretty fun watching the new trailer for each tour just to see what new things got added. Over time it actually got much much better. It got way easier to get rubies for free (in fact I get around 100 each tour), the controls got better, they added landscape mode to the game, but only in races, not the menus, and eventually removed the gatcha pipes from the game, or at least the main pipes. Yeah, there's still some gatcha pipes, but those pipes are completely free. The event token pipe that you use event tokens to fire the pipe (which you get during races, they're the green coins), the multiplayer pipe, which you earn fires from playing multiplayer, and some pipes as rewards for getting stars. Over the years, I've actually collected a massive collection of drivers, all without paying money. Ok, that's a lie, I did get the gold pass a couple times, but that was only the free trial (twice, somehow), and bought with gift card money. Other than that, I'm completely free to play. Oh, and contrary to what scott was saying, you do actually need skill in mario kart tour, and getting first does matter. You see, you earn points in the courses by doing pretty much any action, and you get more points by finishing first. It is hard to get a good amount of points without actdoing anything.
Oh yeah, I'm also a mario kart tour dumper, as in, I dump the game files for others to use (such as extracting the music).
I actually kind of tasked myself to play mkt every day until the game shuts down.

Great to see someone with influence giving this game a chance. Tour IS a great Mario Kart game, and there’s a whole community out there like myself who has been deep into it for 4 years. It involves a ton of strategy and and of course involves skill, you just have to think of it in a different way.
One of the strongest features that gets overlooked a lot I feel is the Weekly Ranking competition. You have to try and get the highest combined score on 3 tracks against 20 other real people at the same skill level as you. If you get a better score, you get more rewards and go to a higher skill level, if you get less, you get fewer rewards and level down. And sure you can pay to get rubies to do better at this, but it’s completely possible to do all of it with just your own skill and no paying, and you get rewarded with characters that would have cost money otherwise.
Yeah this is the exact thing that gets me to come back every tour. The points mechanic is outright addicting and trying to grind out a really high score is a lot of fun. I hope to see a scoring based system as a separate mode in a future Mario Kart game.
Exactly. My wife and I both play ranked every week. Sometimes not even playing the other tracks or online. Ranked is easily the best and most affecting part of this game
Tour is perfect as a mobile game. If I’m im in the waiting room for my doctors appointment, boom. Mario Kart Tour. I play for a few minutes, get called in, go on with my day
The five star system was really annoying for a WHILE because it required just way too many points and they sometimes felt impossible to achieve. And the cart parts gave point multipliers and some other bonuses which seem nessesary to get five stars. They since lowered the number of points tho (now it's too easy though...)
And the horizontal mode really saved the game for me, made drifting for example way easier. That's why it's fitting that the screen is horizontal in the thumbnail

Most people don't know, that there's more in Tour than just mindless racing. There's always a strategy when it comes to resources. Sure, you can just buy and upgrade the most stuff. But the catch is, which item will get you the most coverage or is better suited for certain tracks. Also there's some skill (and rng) involved too. Like some driver items (Lucky Seven, Giant Banana) require different strategies. Wanna risk 2nd or 3rd place to get more combo actions or get lower score but getting the 1st place?
The most fun in this is reaching higher scores (especially in ranked) without spending much on the upgrades.
Kinda sad that most people don't consider it as the ninth mainline entry (aka MK9) only because it is on mobile. But there's so much potential in the future entries when it comes to things introduced in Tour like different track variants. Heck, even in the Booster Course Pass they created dynamic lap changed mainly for the Tour tracks.

I remember when Mario Kart Tour first launched. I was still in high school and our PE teacher was subbing in for a sick teacher. Even she was hyped about it and she just allowed the full class to play together and even then I remember it not being that good. Thank God they improved it
I’ve been playing this game since the Amsterdam Tour in 2022 and once they removed the pipe system for the shop system I even got the gold pass and it’s been so fun! $60 a year is fine for me when the game still changes every 2 weeks (1 if you care about ranked cups).
Happy to see you shouting out how it’s changed, sucks it got better only after the game stopped introducing new content.

I think multiple costumes for each character should become a staple in the next Mario Kart game. Its just a nice quality of life thing to have a bunch of different outfits for your characters, plus they could take a lot of the designs directly from Tour. Not to mention the costumes could be something fun to grind for as unlockables
It would also help soften the blow for situations like Mario Kart 8, where instead of fan favorite characters people had been asking for, they added Pink Gold Peach or Tanuki Mario as seperate characters.

Guys, Scott knows Piranha Plant Cove is a new course. If you rewatch that part again you'll see he says along the lines of "new courses that aren't cities and remastered courses that haven't been remastered before" and then uses Sunset Wilds and Piranha Plant Cove as examples. He just said them in the wrong order.

Scott didn’t even mention the Mii suits. They are by far the best part of the game. Letting you play as yourself is boring in some other games, but all your Mii suits stack +10 points. They also have really good designs. If you sign on right now, you’ll see the Para-Biddybud Mii suit, which looks awesome.
Mii Suits were such a useless and greedy addition lol, they aren’t even worth the expensive amount of rubies. Don’t even get me started with the dogshit mii racing suit bots that are incredibly more annoying than a regular character. I’ve invested my resources in more optimal characters and the results were very successful.
@@theawesomeali8834 If you take them at face value they seem useless, but they're super valuable in the high tiers, especially if you have most or all of them. Pretty much every mii suit can score higher than non-mii plus skills like coin box and boomerang, and the miis who do have plus skills can achieve crazy high scores.
The +10 BP do a lot more than add just 10 points. A level 6 triple cap non-mii gets 72 more points per action, but if you have all miis, a mii of same level and cap gets 104 more points per action. That's 32 more points per action over the non-mii, and you get a bigger score boost when you finish a race as well. You can score like 25% higher with a mii. CB and Boomerang miis are monsters. Some people have hit 100,000+ on Cookie Land with gold mii. I don't think I've seen a non-mii hit 80k.

Yea I hate when mobile games do this, especially the games that actually don't require multiplayer to play, like there was this city builder type game called cartown streets that I loved playing, but then they shut it down completely instead of just making it a offline game when the game itself doesn't require multiplayer.
Putting the tracks in 8 really redeemed Tour for me, but I enjoy it in its own way too

I love Mario Kart Tour. Ive been playing since release date. I always open it at least once a day for about 10-15 minutes and it's honestly the only mobile game I ever put time into other than Dragalia Lost when it was a thing.

11:23 For those that are hesitating to pay for no ads in mobile games, just remember that you can always just turn off your wifi before opening the game, it gets rid of every ad as long as you're not connected to the internet (Ofc make sure the game actually works offline!)
What about mobile data? That cannot be turned of, or at least not without also losing the ability to use the phone as a phone.
if you go into settings and scroll to app specific settings, you’ll be able to turn off mobile data for any downloaded app while still having data on
alternatively you could use an adblocker app
Some games unfortunately have built-in checks to stop you from doing that. For example, that trick works for the mobile version of Plants vs. Zombies 1, but doesn't work for the mobile Classic Sonic games (it'll just give you a message saying you have to connect to the internet).
You could just pay for the ads free version. Games aren’t free to make. I’ve never really understood the pride that comes along with using Adblock. I’ve heard people lament the shutdown of sites/games they loved, while also talking about blocking ads. If you like stuff, you need to pay for it

Mario Kart Tour has the best selection of characters, karts, items, and tracks of the entire Mario Kart series (minus the grinding and difficulty of actually getting all the content). It looks good for a mobile game, and I’m glad people are giving it a bit more respect.

the thing about the Blooper in Tour is that it's not an attack as much as it's a combo extender and the combos are the only things that matter.

Excluding the original Mario Kart 8 DLC characters (Link, Villager, & Isabelle), the only playable characters from any of the Mario Kart games that aren’t in Tour are Honey Queen and ROB.
I got back into the game myself recently, and am tier 40 in the ranked cup. I can assure you, the game is way harder the higher in level you are

To be fair the pipe had a guarantee limit at 100 pulls or something. So it was possible to get that rare character for free, guaranteed, if you saved up.

I quite liked Dragalia Lost and probably would have played more if they hadn't shut it down. It wasn't the greatest game ever, but it was fun enough and a good way to spend a few minutes on a journey.

i was on a school trip when mario kart tour released and literally everyone in my class started playing it. we were supposed to look at art in museums, but we gathered on a bench or in the bus and all played mario kart tour. it was so fun!!

The only thing I truly miss from the early gatcha era of Mario Kart Tour, especially now that the game is essentially dead until it's finally taken offline, is how challenging some of the challenges were if you weren't spending money. One Tuesday night right before the end of a season, I played for hours because I was just missing the "use some amount of mushrooms dropped on the track" challenge and I didn't have any of the pilots that had the mushroom cannon.
It's still a good time filler (although the 300 coin limit kinda makes it hard to want to spend more than 15 minutes a day unless you're a completionist) and the frenzies are fun, but the biggest thrill I feel these days is when I somehow don't get five stars even when using a level 1 pilot, kart and glider.
Funny thing is that MKT was never a bad game. The gacha mechanics were way less abusive than most of games of the genre, but peopl kept complaining about it without actually spending time with the game.
Played for 2 years, never spent a single dollar on it and had a lot of fun.
Ah, yes, I remember I played this for like 2 races and deleted it. But the same goes for all of Nintendo's mobile games, except for Mario Run (which I actually played for quite a long time).

People are always wondering what MarioKart 10 will look like. Not realizing Mario kart tour(9) is right there.
I've always liked this game lol. But the two defining factors outside of how you place in any race are driver and glider levels. Higher driver level increases chance of frenzy. Higher glider level increases the amount of time allowed in between combo actions. Even with the normal drivers you can get decent scores
I remember a point where tour only was announcing tours where they add a SNES track that didn't hype or the RMX tracks but after a point, BAM! Sunset Wilds? it returned into it's only announcing snes courses but outta nowhere, Choco Mountain, and it looked amazing for a mobile game it suddendly started getting Wii tracks after a whole year without them, more GBA courses that weren't Bowser Castles, more DS tracks, more GCN stuff, most of them probably because they were on wii, but still they loked really good for just being part of a mobile game, it also made Tour speculation more fun when the first wave of the booster course pass arrived, people analizing which tour tracks will get picked + the leaks made it feel like you got the whole puzzle solved
