  • Well hello there!
    Really weird how one tank has a serious case of algae and the other one doesn't...a few different reasons I think...

    Hi Joanne , i think i got this one . The tank with algae has a substrate that is much deeper than the other so its PAR reading at the substrate is much higher than the tank with the no algae""

    As well as the Val and Crypts using up nutrients - they also cause shade so there is less light for the algae in that tank, but in the other tank, as well as no shade, there is some white hardscape which will reflect the light around the tank so there is even more light available for the algae ? Maybe ??

    I find a toothbrush is best for green hair algae twirl it and the algae gets caught in the bristles better. It is the tool of choice for me. Not only that but you can brush hard scape at the same time to break the algae off.

      Yup! Me too - a little harder to do in this tiny tank but I agree it is one of the best tools to use 😊

    I have a 10 gallon long where I am battling hair and staghorn algae. It is planted with quite a few crypts all along the tank, sag grass on one end that has carpeted the one end of the tank, Buce on the driftwood and rocks, one piece of java fern I stuck in a rock, and one larger anubia. The hair and staghorn algae appear to be growing predominantly on the Buce. I think though it is because all of the Buce are planted on a long piece of driftwood that runs the length of the tank. I have a couple of dragon stones on one end with the wood sitting on top sloping down to a small grouping of smaller stones on the opposite end of the tank ending in a carpet of sag grass. The wood makes a bridge running the length of the tank. So fish can swim around the hardscape and under the wood bridge. The filter is on one end with the flow going the length of the tank. It is a medium flow tank running the length of the tank like a river (the flow on one end is stronger than on the other end. The tank is stocked with a group of Venezuelan Red Sail Cory’s, a group of chili rasboras, a pair of amano shrimp and maybe 5 blue dream shrimp. The blue dream shrimp came over from another tank on some frogbit and I just left them as they seemed happy.
    Anyway, the algae is growing on the wood and the Buce which is on the wood with a little bit on the larger rocks in the end near the filter intake and output. It looks like the algae prefers the area with the most flow as it is heaviest nearer the output flow. There is not a bit of algae on the crypts or along the bottom of the tank. I initially tried manually removing and spot treating with 3% hydrogen peroxide. That did not work, and I think there was just too much light probably because this is a long tank making the light closer to everything in the tank. So, I have now reduced the lighting by lifting the light higher above the tank, reducing the brightness in general and turning the light on for a shorter period. I have also changed the output flow of the filter. I had a rain bar on the tank and I changed it to a directional flow that points more toward the glass and up so the surface is stirred, but there is less flow down the wood. I also removed the wood and manually cleaned off as much of the algae as I could. I am now waiting to see if these changes make a difference.
    The fish in this tank are very happy. I just got a large spawn out of my Cory’s in the tank. I did a 50% water change after I did a clean up along with the above changes. I am sure the water change triggered the spawn. The Cory’s were excited for the whole day after the water change.
    I am anxious to see the results of your experiment. Hopefully we will both be successful.

      Wow - thanks for all the info. I wish us both luck too! Funny how there is no algae on the crypts for you too…

    • @BTQ410
      @BTQ410 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thesmallscape the crypts weren’t in the main flow of the output. They were along the sides of the two groups of rocks that the wood was laying across. In my tank, I think the water flow has been a major factor of where the hair and staghorn has grown. I have since noticed that in one of my 5 gallons when I get hair algae in it, it is near the output from the filter on that tank too. It makes sense if you think about where you see hair algae or staghorn in the wild.

    Ugh! Algae, it’s the number one thing I fight to get rid of. I once got rid of a whole plant just to get it out of my tank. I can’t wait to see how it goes for you. ❤

    Awesome video! I'm getting ready to set up a 40gal breeder and I was going to use fluval substrate and flourite black sand gravel in fine mesh bags and cap with fourite black sand, is this a bad idea??

    Currently battling hair algae in two of my tanks. My driftwood is covered. It doesn’t look awful when I keep up with manually removing it but I wish it was gone. Has strangled multiple stem plants in one of these tanks.Have reduced the light. Thinking of adding some terrestrial plants maybe? Look forward to seeing how you deal with it because I’m close to dismantling and starting over. 💙

    For some reason, I don't have algae problems. I get cyanobacteria problems instead. I think I have too many nutrients in soil and need to redo my scapes.

    I have a 5 gallon Betta tank with crypts, anubias, and a couple Bacopas. I added a couple algae wafers for the 6 Otos I have in there yesterday, and a few hours later there was a green sludge on the stem plants and the stones. Did the wafers melt?? I've never had this happen before.
