Congratulations on your hellebore's, they are such an amazing species, freaking gorgeous! If you have sweeter soil than we in the Rockies you can also get fragrant witch hazels, that bloom "Helle early, lol!
Weathered and appropriately cleaned hardwood like oak and maple are considered aquarium safe. You can google every wood you can identify, and discover ways to test unidentified wood. Fresher oak, like new wine barrels, would be great to start a tannic tank. I wonder if walnut would still be allelopathic? That would be great for algae in an unplanted tank!
You were a wonderful way to spend an evening. I look forward to many more. Keep focused on that humor and shared passion, as diligently as a show tank, it gives you the recipe for a long and fruitful relationship! You are a delight to learn from. Thanks!!

I was thinking of trying iron wood for a type of drift wood. When the ground thaws out I’ll get some and try it.

A tip for keeping water wisteria and water sprite down (if you find you don't have the right touch to use bare lead weight strips) is wrap a bit of filter floss around the stems, then gently wrap the lead weight strip around that... :)

I'm not sure, I've lost a oto to filter floss, and almost lost one to an invisible strand of hair algae. Have you ever tried gluing it? I've been trying to glue everything to small pebbles and clear glass marbles, it's a super cute way to feature a nano, and easily re-scape on a creative whim, lol! on I didn't think lead was ok in the aquarium?

Keeping it simple makes it easy to clean and take care of. Keep some space on the landscaping sides to vacuum and clean the glass! And enough room for the fish to swim around too.

You and me both! I feel like Goldilocks trying to find fish that have the right size heads lol.
"This one is too fat. That one is too tiny. That ones eyes are 18 sizes too large. This one is JUUUUUSSSST right!" and outs at a guppy...
By the way, praecox rainbowfish ARE dwarf neon rainbows. Not sure what you had that had the iridescent silver unless you had a really bad strain of praecox that didn't color up. Mine are pretty bright turquoise blue most of the time, though they do tone down a bit sometimes to iridescent.

All I need now is a tank, some water oh and the fish. LOL

  • @MrGrombie

    $30/tank
    $20/Substrate
    $30 Light
    $10/Dechlorinator
    $5/Net
    $20/Air Pump
    $7/sponge filter combo
    $20/plants
$142 for a decent tank around 10-20g for nano tanks. And that is without the fish.
People sometimes underestimate how much just getting into the hobby with a decent tank. AND that is without the knowledge to know that Goldfish don't belong in 10g... lol

    • @MrGrombie

I missed this but I watched! Thank you for all the info. I heard you say you have kept dwarf praecox rainbow fish. Did you have issues with them jumping? Just curious because i want to remove my aquarium lid and have an open top. but i don't want to lose my beautiful sub-adult rainbows... they are great fish, and a lot of fun to watch. Best wishes and happy new year!

I have a variety of plants in my tanks doing well, only 2 anubias and they’re both rotting at the rhizome... glued on to driftwood. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong!

    • @thesmallscape
      @thesmallscape  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi Amanda! Thank you so much for the comment. I will talk to Mr PTA - that’s a great question to answer in the livestream! 👍As for your Anubias rotting ..hmmm...usually that’s due to infection. I would suggest cutting off and tossing any of the infected part of the rhizome (hoping that any healthy part has roots attached). I’ve personally never heard of any treatment to “cure it”. Or take pic to wherever you purchased it from?

You'd really like the neon green tetras. I had been wanting them for a long time and I finally broke down and ordered a 5 pack from Flip Aquatics (they sent 6) to try them out cuz I have really hard water. They're supposed 2 be softer water fish. They did great so I ordered another 5 (6) pack. I love them, they look so cool.
