Interesting! Now that I think about it..Star Spangled Banner does sound like an old Irish ballad or something? I can just imagine it now. People swinging jugs of beer in the air as they sing.
Exactly!!! I am friends with a VERY prominent Nashville studio musician (world renown). He has told me that so many of today’s “stars” refuse to go back into the booth to correct errors and have the engineer do it with software. Sickening. It’s a slap in the face to real musicians and mostly to the fans
Anywhere, bring back real singers but sadly the consumers of today's crap are completely tone deaf, as long as there's plenty of bass and thumping their happy and so are the ones feeding it to them because they make lots of money, pearls before swines you might say.
My ears are still bleeding from hearing this first hand. Only you Fil, could make me sit through it again. Yes, I'd say with my almost 70 years of music experience, this was indeed the worst performance of our National Anthem I've ever heard. You maintained your cool, calm analytical self throughout. This may be the only time I say "Yay, PC/auto tune." Bravo, Fil.
@trekkiejunk Roseanne Barr was attempting satire, possibly humor, maybe even to be offensive. This Dixie chick wannabe was actually trying to vocalize an epic rendition of the anthem. I don’t know which was worse. Both sucked. Eggs.
One of the things Iike about your videos is the joy that shows on your face as you listen to the great singers. This is the first time I have seen you keep a very straight face during a performance.
I gotta say, Fil, you are absolutely a true professional and a very decent person. Few I think could avoid the opportunity to trash this young woman. Hopefully she finds her way.
I don't know Fil irl, but he seems to have very likeable qualities. TH-cam, for all its.problems, does allow for people with certain likeable qualities to gain a following. For the older set, usually it's good presentation skills or voice. Sometimes it's special people like Fil.
Fil you are always a classy, empathetic and compassionate analyst. Hats off to you on this one. Nice to have someone who doesn't bash someone who is already down. You are top notch! 🎼🎸🤘💖
Fil, you are the kindest person in the world. You pointed out where things went wrong while also pointing out where things were good or had the potential to be -- and then wrapped your analysis up as a generous, considerate gift to this young singer who must feel absolutely crushed. I wish her the best on her rehab and hope she'll see your video and hear her real self in the song as you restored it. As in the video about Randy Travis, AI can be used with helpfulness and kindness appropriately.
Fil you are such a kind person. You also made an analysis of a debacle of a performance interesting with your pitch correction etc. I learned a lot as usual.
I immediately thought of your channel when I heard this. I agree with a commenter below that she should have had an earpiece to help her, and many artists struggle with the delayed feedback in live performances. The Cyndi Lauper example from Glastonbury you featured recently is a good example. Evidently, there is a phenomena called Delayed Auditory Feedback which has this affect, and there is an interesting video about it called Testing My Speech Jammer in Public it is by Benn Jordan, and the explanation is in the third chapter beginning at 4:12. By the way Fil, YOU did a magnificent job singing the National Anthem!!!
Too many singers these days mistake the mannerisms for technique. All those little ticks at the ends of her notes are undoubtedly inspired by someone who uses them as embellishments on top of an otherwise good performance.
And this poor young lady has zero technical skill. Great singers can do those things beautifully. Whether it is appropriate is a separate discussion, but she truly has a much bigger issue than being drunk.
@@don-music how does one graduate from Berklee School of Music with major in songwriting and *performance* without knowing the technical aspects of singing?
Perhaps if Ingrid wasn't in the state she was in at the time, it would have been a good performance. Also singing a national anthem is not something to be taken lightly nor as an opportunity to be stand-offish.
Fil, cheers to you for not wincing during that performance! That is why you are on You Tube and I am not.😂 Maybe the flag should be turned upside down in distress!
Hey Fil: The videos you do about artists of the 1960s and 1970s really point to just how natural and organic those recordings sound. To draw a comparison between music and filmmaking, you only have to look at films that were made before CGI and films that were made using CGI. For me, it doesn’t matter how slick the CGI is, I can always tell which films use CGI and which films feature actual locations and real actors. The same is true of recorded music. Auto-tune and pitch correction are usually quite detectable, and that is a distraction because the use of computers makes people’s vocals sound computerized. Another interesting facet of this is that when you listen to music from the 1960s, the recording studios had a real atmosphere to them. There is a real sense of the music being performed on a stage because you can hear the natural reverb in the recording studio, which adds to that sense of the music being organic, and and sounding authentic.
Until the late sixties recording was having 5, 10, 15 or 20 musicians in the same room with just one microphone, playing together usually in one take (time is money) and voila (see for example the best bacharach and david recordings, or any jazz record from that era)
@@justaguy12345 Your point reminds me of the "no good toupee" logical fallacy. Every time you see a bad toupee, you could say "see, there's no good toupee". However, if it was a good one, you wouldn't be able to say "oh, there are good toupee". Same might go for CGI.
@@someguy999I'd sure like to hear some of his examples of no-CGI. If it was made in the last 20 years it's virtually guaranteed to have kits of CGI and other VFX. Check out the 4 part series by The Movie Rabbit Hole, "NO CGI" is really INVISIBlE CGI.
I think you did an amazing job with the pitch correcting software, it sounded like a decent song...This was an excellent demonstration of the difference between pitch correction and a "troubled" natural voice...
Thanks for the very interesting, and compassionate, video, Fil. As I recall, Jose Feliciano was among the first, if not THE first, to "jazz up" the Anthem, at game 5 of the 1968 World Series. It was quite tame in my view-- nothing more than Jose's typical melodic stylings-- but man, it caused a furor! Mason Williams affectionately called it "The Star Spangled Beaner."
The French comedy film "Marguerite" (inspired by the story of Florence Foster Jenkins) has a hilarious scene where the heroine is singing the Marseillaise with ridiculous balloon leaps out of key; this is France around 1920 so of course her friends are very offended. :)
Phil, thank you for this video. I learned a lot and at the end, I teared up, not only because it was as though you gave her a second try, but that you have such humanity and kindness to be so level headed and not criticize this young girl, who I imagine has been raked over the coals thoroughly and who knows if she will recover.
I love your analysis. So cool that you don't just ridicule her, but explains how this can happen to anybody being under preassure in front of a huge crowd.
Give me Jimi Hendrix's version any day. This woman's "singing" was physically painful and I sincerely mean physically painful. My ears are still ringing. If she made the conscious decision to go out and sing it fully drunk, it's on her and she deserves the criticism. And don't give me the "Oh, but she's got substance abuse issues and be sensitive" nonsense. My entire career was working in the field of rehabilitation. She never should have taken that mic in her hand.
@@kosmosycheyou'd think. I can sing (even this song specifically) half-asleep, dead tired, or suffering bronchitis. Anything Hank Sr (aside from the his gospel works) sounds more authentic after at least half a drink.
That goes to show that anyone viewing this could sing the National Anthem, and it would be made to sound fantastic. No talent was needed, which in this case was the case.
Thanks for being kind and taking the time to highlight her in her own environment… you handled this one very professionally without the theatrical rant style others may have used… thumbs up…
Being drunk aside, there are certain singers that just shouldn't sing the US National Anthem. Ingrid uses that breathy, vocal fry, little girl voice that's been popular in folk-rock, singer-songwriter type music for the last 20 years. It's just not appropriate for the SSB, and she doesn't seem to be able to sing in any other way, other than the breathy, little girl, folk-rock voice.
I really dislike that breathy, little girl, folk-rock voice that is so common nowadays. Usually it's combined with weird pronunciations of words. I personally find it grating.
The SSB has a range of a 15th. It should be handled with care. She has no belt or mix. And she also has no common sense to realize that she was massacring it and continued to the top notes of "Flag was still there" instead of dropping back down to the original octave and playing is somewhat safe. But despite everything she still felt the need to "grand stand" those notes. The long run, well, I cannot even fathom the note choices- wanting to riff like Mariah Carey? WTF? Stick with the little girl stuff, Ingrid.
Fil, I give you such high respect for getting through this and not busting out with hilarious laughter. I still cannot. You Sir, are a true professional.
Thanks! Hi Fil, really enjoy your content and have learned so much from the isolated vocals and your, probably, perfect pitch. Great program! I’m not sure if you’ll ever read this but I had a funny experience as an x-audio guy around the world with pitch in crowds which was unusually surprising. It goes back to a Dave Barry article about crowds at basketball games in the US and he was amazed that when people sang “air ball, air ball” when the ball didn’t hit the rim, they were always on pitch. I tested this theory as I had worked 5 Olympics and all hockey, basketball (in an arena of course) and football in particular over the years. Amazingly the crowd was ‘dead on pitch’ singing “Air Ball” or a similar phrase in their country’ language of choice. I couldn’t believe it and thought you may find this fascinating (or not). But kudos to Dave Barry to point this out. Ps. This performer should have been taken away after the first 2 measure. Yuck. You have one of the best musical analysis shows ever. Cheers
It would be interesting to see what’s going on with all the series of The Voice. I’ve never seen a fumble from any of the constants. It sounds like it’s live but I’m curious if it’s lip sinking cause it’s impossible to have so many versions of this show yet no one makes a mistake. 🤷♂️
Heard about the drinking claim. On the other hand, every word is correct. Every word enunciated very well. Arrangement of words is correct. No slurring or mumbling. No drooling. No wobbling. Descent posture. Just can’t sing a note. Like she’s out of tune. I can’t sing either though. Drunk or sober. Man. I gotta get one of those pitch machines. Wow!
Here in the US we have a long tradition of singing the the National Anthem out-of-tune, and as you briefly allude to, the big problem is not starting low enough, and then you get stuck at the really high passage. This tune has a very wide range, and plenty of professional singers have butchered it. This girl isn't the first. It's quite common for them to get the words wrong too. Also, in the spot where she really flubbed it, for some reason she changed up the tune to make it go even higher than it normally would.
She clearly hasn't had a basic musical education. But she ACTS like she can sing. Having a nice singing voice is all well and good, but without an education you're heading for public embarrassment.
@@DaveyMulholland the wild thing is - she actually graduated from Berklee for songwriting and performance… Aside from her supposed drinking on the night of, I don’t feel her vocal range/vocal ability suits the national anthem-it’s a hard song to begin with, and she started way too high for her range.

Hi Fil, This was an interesting video. The Star Spangled Banner is not an easy song to sing. And she wasn’t even close to getting it right even with your corrected version. Thanks for looking at this, and trying your best to explain what was going on. If she was that impaired someone on her “Team” should have stopped her from singing this mess. Great job! Debbie☮️
You're absolutely right about "The Star Spangled Banner" not being easy to sing--an octave and a fifth. An untrained voice barely has that vocal range. Even a trained singer has to know his/her comfortable range. Yet there might be one exception: At my college graduation, this "noted soprano" sang "The Star Spangled Banner" and raised "the brave" by an octave. I think she turned ppl off, though. Yes, Fil did an amazing job! 👏
Yeah, but Fil, you only have to deal with God Save the King. :) Seriously, thanks for digging into this. There's no way not to feel bad for her, inebriated or not. And lovely rearrangement at the end. I hope she hears this as a reminder of what she CAN sound like.

@@davidburne9477 She has a performance (and a songwriting) degree from Berklee. As a jazz-focused conservatory I would think they would require proper microphone use as part of the training.
She is flailing for notes, but I *do* hear some kind of electrical/digital manipulation, as though the machinery is guessing the tonal center (and changing its mind every few notes). My understanding about those auto-tuning/auto-chording microphones is that they just need a tonal center and scale in order to work...so if she was *off enough to defy the auto-tune*, then that's why it was inexcusable.
It sounds so bad that I can’t hear the artifacts from an auto tune microphone (tbf, I was laughing a bit). Yet, in her performance on the piano, her voice sounds good. Maybe she can only sing in her head voice. 🤷♀️
Someone pointed out that her performance in the NPR Tiny Desk video wasn’t really singing but more like her speaking softly where her voice is in her natural register so singing the anthem was more of a vocal stretch for her. This is a very compelling example of what pitch correction can do for even the worse of performances. Which begs the question as to why a singer would even bother to achieve their best performance when they can just mail it in. This video deserves a gazillion views so people can get educated on what the abuse of pitch correction really represents.
Until I heard Fils' modification and accompaniment, I thought no way this is salvageable. It was embarrassingly "off" as he politely put it, and comprehensive/understanding in his explanation. He not only pulled a rabbit out of a hat, he was a true gentleman about it. I am very impressed on both counts, but not surprised he was so nice about it - that quality of character is only matched by his talent and mastery of the craft. I'm sure he looked at this as a challenge, something "I have to fix if I can... poor girl". It does show that pitch correction is a clever tool, essential in some cases.
“…we are not really maintaining pitch.” Thank you Fil for the statement which says it all. I wish she’d had an ear piece to help her. Filling a large space and singing this song is not easy.
It isn’t easy. But it is quite possible even without an earpiece. The singer has to maintain pitch and rhythm. If you nail those, the crowd will sing with you. There is sound distortion to deal with so you have to keep your ears open and sing out. Drinking seldom enhances pitch.
Yeah, it's already a challenging song to sing... why do it if you know you aren't up to it, especially in front of so many people, and you're so scared you get drunk (before a performance - how unprofessional).
@@mademsoisellerhapsody Can confirm. I had it as a solo once (at a much smaller event) and the microphone cut out halfway through, but I kept going, and the audience finished the anthem with me.
alicesmith, The Star Spangled Banner is a very difficult song to sing under any circumstances. This woman's performance is a strong plea for America to choose a different National Anthem. Years ago there was a movement suggesting "America The Beautiful." This performance is evidence that any song is preferable, but let's agree it must not be the one entitled "America," better known as "My Country Tis of Thee."

She could have and should have taken more time, slowed down instead to get control... rushing a panicky situation only makes it worse. She's not the pro she thinks she is, unfortunately. She did everything wrong. I mean if she got hammered before performing, she knew going in she was over her head.

It is by no means an easy song to sing and only actual professionals should attempt it a capela in front of a huge crowd.

This was roughly my theory too. I wonder if she didn’t exaggerate her drunkenness because this is harder to explain to the general public.
Too many singers these days mistake the mannerisms for technique. All those little ticks at the ends of her notes are undoubtedly inspired by someone who uses them as embellishments on top of an otherwise good performance.
Pomplamoose
And this poor young lady has zero technical skill. Great singers can do those things beautifully. Whether it is appropriate is a separate discussion, but she truly has a much bigger issue than being drunk.
@@don-music how does one graduate from Berklee School of Music with major in songwriting and *performance* without knowing the technical aspects of singing?
Perhaps if Ingrid wasn't in the state she was in at the time, it would have been a good performance. Also singing a national anthem is not something to be taken lightly nor as an opportunity to be stand-offish.

"I can always tell which films use CGI"
I agree with most of your points, but as for this, no, you probably can't.

I feel so badly for her. Thank you Til for your compassionate analysis of Ingrid's performance..
I looked at her Wikipedia page, and she started a metal band before she went to Berklee. Now she sings country music, and writes songs for others.
I really dislike that breathy, little girl, folk-rock voice that is so common nowadays. Usually it's combined with weird pronunciations of words. I personally find it grating.
@@whiteninja2006 , It is grating.
@@SuziQ.Oof... that's a black mark on Berk.

Cheers

She did get the words right, so she deserves a point or two for just that. Amazing, really, considering she was THAT drunk 🥴?

Hi Fil, thank you for persevering through this entire debacle. I honestly couldn't listen to the whole thing. It was just too painful❤
It still sounded unbearable. There was much more than pitch wrong with that performance.
“…we are not really maintaining pitch.” Thank you Fil for the statement which says it all. I wish she’d had an ear piece to help her. Filling a large space and singing this song is not easy.
It's not that hard. She just can't sing to begin with + she's drunk

Yeah, I thought the same thing, felt bad for her.
She could have and should have taken more time, slowed down instead to get control... rushing a panicky situation only makes it worse. She's not the pro she thinks she is, unfortunately. She did everything wrong. I mean if she got hammered before performing, she knew going in she was over her head.

You have to give her credit, even though she had too much to drink, she got through it all and didn't forget any of the words. The U.S national anthem does not suit everyone's voice, for sure. Hopefully she can bounce back from this.
I’m pretty sure they have the lyrics on screen for the performers to see/read. I’d never heard of her, either, but that’s probably because she usually sings country music.
