It's that vocal affectation that so many put on for talent show auditions that seems to be the issue. She's probably so used to not using her "non-famous" voice, and instead using the vocal affectation that's gained her popularity, that when she has to really belt it's just not there.
She usually (always?) sings in her head voice, which is the opposite of belting. Didn’t they do a sound check and a practice run? She has a soft, breathy voice. This song wouldn’t be in her wheelhouse if she was sober.
This probably. She doesn't sound like a very technical singer and seems to rely a lot on said affectations, from what her original music suggests, and it looks like she bit much more than she could chew. In fairness, quite a few tricky intervals in SSB, and if her monitoring wasn't good and she could hear too much of the echo wash from the stadium, that might have not helped either. Also probably wasn't too prepared/rehearsed, else she would probably have been able to just shut off all exterior noise completely and rely on muscle memory and inner voice.

JUstin, you've reached where I am in life as well. I'm a little over 50 and I have a different perspective on things. We don't want people to fail. We don't like to see people being embarrassed and certainly dislike people piling on afterward. Having a kid is certainly part of it. Maturity as well.

There's just a lack of empathy in general in the service of mockery and humiliation.

@@JohnFoley-cm8lm Being honest with anyone about their addiction and the need to get help, or that they should improve at something, is not the same as publicly trashing and humiliating them and making them the butt of a collective cruel joke. There's a difference. It's a lack of empathy for whatever someone is going through, and a resistance to letting people make a mistake without utterly tearing them down for it and clamoring for their end. I never heard of this woman before this, but she didn't k-ll someone, she just flubbed a performance. Publicly failing is humiliation enough for anyone, people don't need to actively make it worse. At the end of the day, what goes around comes around, and those who willingly participate in humiliation of someone who isn't a pos will at some point experience what the person they targeted felt.
Thank you to people like yourself and Fil from Wings of Pegasus for providing sensible, down to earth, compassionate commentary on this, injecting humour where you can that isn't at her expense or part of a pile on, while educating the viewers about various aspects of music, the music industry, the causes and pitfalls of addiction etc. People have been numbed by decades of Gordon Ramsay, Simon Cowell and the like who make/have made a profession (and plenty of money) of highly unnecessary humiliation, verbal abuse and tirades. Singing a cappella in a stadium with a major sound delay is no joke. People wanting to know more can Google Heather Youmans who has done videos and interviews about the challenges of stadium sound delays.
Yeah, there at the end she slipped and tried desperately to catch it and then panicked. 99% of those watching were just waiting for the game to start. The anthem is a tradition and a formality only a few are truly moved by. Who among us hasn't had a moment we wish we could "re-do" or delete all together? Forget about it and everyone else will follow. If they don't, F#¢k 'em.
I'm with you, Justin. Those of us who get on stage will invariably have a bad day/performance. I hope she gets the help she needs and for this experience to make her stronger as an entertainer. Thanks for your take.
As one who has been involved in the production of music (20 years a keyboardist worldwide and 30 years in education right up to university level) Mr Hawkins is absolutely right in his observations of voice production, intonation and pitch and general song delivery. There have been many times examples of the solo singer starting off 'a capella' singing eight or so bars of a tune and missing the real key by three or even four semitones. Accurate Pitching is a real test of pitch-memory skills. It is rarely done accurately. But then all of the other vocal inflections are perceived as "style". Vocal 'upper and lower mordents' where the voice bends a note for effect is commonplace in jazz and pop, but listening to the vocals here, remembering the original key seems to have left her in a precarious situation. I'm afraid that I had to stop at 4'15". It was too much. Mr Hawkins, you took one for the team. I commend you upon your patience and diplomacy. IMHO if you set yourself up to do this job, you must face the backlash when it goes upside down.
My mum was an alcoholic and she lost her battle two weeks ago aged 51. People commenting negatively have no idea what addiction is, how it controls your life and behaviour and how much destruction it can cause. Thank you for handling this sympathetically Justin.

I agree that Fergie gets unnecessary hate, as if she sang badly. The problem is that she seemed to make the 'national' anthem about herself rather than the simple ritual that it was.
JUstin, you've reached where I am in life as well. I'm a little over 50 and I have a different perspective on things. We don't want people to fail. We don't like to see people being embarrassed and certainly dislike people piling on afterward. Having a kid is certainly part of it. Maturity as well.
Ingrid Andress: "I was drunk. I can't perform while being drunk."
Ozzy Osbourne: "Bloody hell, she's an amateur."
Lemmy Kilmister: "What did she say? Amateur."
David Lee Roth: "That gal is an amateur."
Whitney: "I was on crack!" Jk
@@DWilliams-sf5th But she was. Just not while performing.
Keith Moon: nope
Eddie Van Halen : not so much

You have to check out Chris Stapleton singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl, it’s amazing!
Nice video Justin. I haven't dropped in for awhile and I enjoyed it. I like how you put up clips of other disastrous versions.
thanks for not being a Dick. You are what the internet needs more of Justin. Love and appreciate what you do
Good to see you back on youtube Justin
I'm surprised they're saying Rosanne Barr's performance. that one caused quite an uproar in the 80s
We never imagined it could get worse. Now it has. 😂
The difference is she's not a singer. Same with Karl Lewis.
Rosanne was the first thing that came to mind.
You're always so fair and understanding!
Meanwhile at the Euros the England fans were all apparently singing 'God save the Kwing'
😂😂😂😂
That would take a lot of time getting used to. You've sung "queen" for 50 years afterall.
@@Kasino80 70 years! I'm not a huge royalist, but it did feel like she'd been Queen forever.

Now, she actually became famous, as hardly anyone heard of her before
she is pretty well known in the world of Pop Country.
Yep! This had been my very first impression of her indeed! 😅
@@itsdavew5766I live in Nashville and never once heard her name.

You're amazing... You're being very generous, and just straight up honest about your response. It's *very* difficult to find any honest review of it... NBA, I think basketball.
She's singing all the right notes .... just not necessarily in the right order or key. But its sad...
She could release an album called “Ingrid goes to War” - a compilation of various anthems, yowled with gusto.
I reckon the stadium acoustics played a role too… the way sound bounces around the stadium on a delayed kind of echo… it got worse the louder she got… I wondered if she was getting pulled off the note because she was hearing her own voice coming back singing other notes
The singer got more publicity singing at worst of her ability than singing at the best of her ability.
No autotune
pretty good publicity stunt 😮
@@mootbooxleThat little thought whispered in my ear, too. I mean, you'd have to be doing that deliberately- surely? Even if we give her the benefit of the doubt, surely it was at least for a bet 😬
@@mootbooxlegood as a publicity stunt, but not good for her career! She’ll have to live that down FOREVER. Look what happened to Rebecca Black…

My son sent me this poor young lady's preformance. All I could say was "That took Courage" :/
Looking absolutely gorgeous Justin
I legitimately feel bad for her. It's an extremely difficult song and she knows from the very beginning how bad it is. The fact that she's a professional singer and is there means she's capable of better, if she legitimately couldn't sing there's no way she would expose herself like that. Something just went wrong and it snowballed, you can see the panic on her face.
Agree with you Justin. I felt very sorry for her.
But anyone who thinks that rehab is “fun” is in for a real awakening!😜Thanks for being nice guy and not piling on the nastiness.😻👏🏻BTW, you look fab hon❤
Been a fan of yours since I was in secondary school! You're the real deal aren't you, keep on keeping on x
The public is always unforgiving for those who fail, regardless of the reason. They would all feel terrible if others trashed their own individual failures, but they gleefully dish it to others. That girl wasn't taking the piss out of it, she was drunk and clearly had an alcohol problem if she had to check herself into rehab. There's just a lack of empathy in general in the service of mockery and humiliation.
People have to know there's a consequence for ignorance. Otherwise every addict and their dog would be up on the mound with a microphone. Wait...that just happened, right!
Hawkins is being incredibly kind.
Our Ears had to go to Rehab after that Anthem Performance
I'm with you, Justin. Those of us who get on stage will invariably have a bad day/performance. I hope she gets the help she needs and for this experience to make her stronger as an entertainer. Thanks for your take.
Her bomb surely was bursting in air.

Hi Justin! Yeah. It's pretty painful to listen to.
Justin, your hair looks great!
Haha love the Hoff
This kind of reminds me of Sheryl Crow’s leaving Las Vegas. In that when she’s trying to hit those notes it sounds like she is struggling. I’ve always felt like that about leaving las Vegas but that’s what I love about the song. Anyway just my 2 cents.
Sheryl Crow simply cannot sing. That’s the brutal truth.
The fact that Crow is in the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame but Supertramp is not, only proves that the Hall Of Fame is a complete joke.
@@Beachgirl1 I agree with half of this. I think she can sing ok. She’s no Tina turner, but she has no business being in the RRHOF before supertramp.
i'm just checking to make sure Justin says "dahrby."
