Just stunning. I Have Nothing is my favorite Whitney song, it is just so full of emotion. And actually seeing what is happening vocally - I’m speechless.
I always thought she was so pitch perfect. Her voice is beautiful. So much richness in her voice. Thanks for showing me this. My favourite singer of all times, i think. I just love the way you grin at the superlative bits.
‘Perfect’ is what we hear on the radio from the wretched Antares tuner that radio programmers have shoved down our throats. Whitney’s pitch was way better than ‘perfect’.
Whitney could interrupt any part of my day, her voice just builds and when the voice peeks my day just got so much better. I don't have the vocabulary to explain Whitney!
when I was stationed in Germany in 1991 I watched on TV as Whitney sang the National Anthem at the Super Bowl and I kinda knew I wouldn't hear a better rendition at any time going forward. And I haven't. Whitney was something else.

Great analysis on what made Whitney Houston as good as she was. I have learned so much from you Fil, a sign of a good teacher is one who doesn't put their pupils to sleep. 👍
Nuture meets nature to the max. Beyond Gifted and coached by her mother , sang in the church from a young child, extraordinary disciplined, a hot house flower groomed for success , and whether you Like Clive Davis or not he masterminded her image and songs for her that suited her voice her range and lead her to superstardom. He personally took 2 years to find the perfect songs for her. No other exec would have done that and he knew how special she was. With all that behind her, she had the spirit of the creator with her when she sang. Transcendent.
Fil. I've listened to you for a few years. Watching and listening to your comments and the way you explain things are just as impressive as the artist's performances. Your positive enthusiasm is contagious!
Whitney sang with total conviction, which is why we all respond so strongly to her performances. Her soft voice is like velvet. And when she unleashed those titanium vocal chords! Yes, Lord! Sing it, girl!!!
Damn, it took me forever to get to see this. At this time, I think Whitney Houston was one of the most beautiful, talented women alive. To see, pain and addiction take it all from her was so painful. Thankyou for highlighting her.👍🥰💝✌
Whitney Houston was, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful singers I've ever heard. She was another beautiful woman with a beautiful voice who was taken away from us at such a young age. I enjoy listening to her songs and loved watching her in, The Bodyguard and The Preachers Wife. I dont know if she did any other movie or not. I'm sure had she lived, we would've been blessed with more beautiful songs to enjoy. May she RIP.
Known throughout the world as 'The Screamer'. Listen to her when she hits the high notes her pitch is very hard when it should be soft. If you want to hear somebody do what I am saying listen to either Mirusia or Sonya Isaacs. They are perfect at this especially in a C6 high.
@john I was just coming in here to say the exact same thing. People forget over time and in this case it should not be forgotten. Whitney is a perfect example of how you can have everything and still kill yourself with drugs. Yes. She wasn’t “taken” from us. She was a drug addict and killed herself with them. Just because she was a beautiful singer and beloved by millions doesn’t change the fact that she was a druggy. The only difference between her and a commoners drug death is one died in an ally in their own puke and one died in a royal bathtub.
@@gwendolynkaren5933 That's too bad. The gift she left the world is priceless and a Grand lesson to stay away from drugs or else. But for anyone who cares see kat kerr video abt Whitney return to heaven. It's an awesome welcome.
I think you’re right. It’s a mix of talent and technique. I always found it intriguing that her jaw moved with her vibrato. Her tone is beautiful. I think there’s a lot to be said about a natural voice with its beautiful flaws vs something mass produced with no character. I was never a huge fan of the music style, but Whitney’s voice pulls you in every time.
Saw Whitney 5 times, including in '93. She was absolutely flawless and untouchable at that time. Had lost a little by '99. Still the best ever to do it.
They way her voice just blossoms - I mean she throws down the gauntlet and just opens up, it's just amazing! Thank you so much for this analysis video Fil!
Plus I have to add - this is not an easy song to sing. It changes key multiple times and it's certainly not one that most people can just sing along in the car with - even the studio version.
One of the best vocal analysis I've watched. Very impressed by Whitney's vibrato. Please analyze her performance of Saving All my Love for You Japan 1991. Whitney, the band and the backing vocals, the solo sax - one word, masterclass.
I love Whitney Houston's clarity, tone, power, range and emotion she was a Tour de Force, her songs were some of the most challenging to sing and if you are a singer, you study her... She left us with great music. Love the analysis I hope you do more Whitney... sorry I am biased.
W Houston was definitely in a different league. Pleased that you selected this performance from the early 1990's and not later for analysis. Thanks for the visuals.
I've watched the video dozens and dozens of times - maybe hundreds of times. Always stunning, but the isolated vocals you present here are another thing altogether. Chills and tears. What a vocalist and interpreter of emotions she was. A gift to us all. Thank you for sharing this!
Man, I was smiling with you all the way through to the end...THAT RANGE MAN!!!! I didn't know Darlene (Wright) Love was a relation! Her God given talent demanded excellence. It sounds like Whitney practiced when she was young like she was prepping for the Olympics! Another great analyst Fil👍
Right! I found out Darlene Love was her family and I was like woah!! How cool! I mean, with a talented family like Cissy Houston, Dionne Warwick, Darlene Love and the Queen of Soul Aretha, she was destined to sing! ❤️
I was in the Army stationed in Stuttgart Germany when Whitneys first Album dropped. No matter what door you walked by in the barracks Whitney was blaring out of the boom boxes. She was a gift to our ears and hearts. I love you Whitney youre still with us.
It's not just the voice, but her musicianship, her charisma in vocal improvisation. All singers who have the proper technique to sing her songs, they just sing the album version. Glennis Grace sings the same version every time, she can't improvise at all. But Whitney never sung any song in the same way in her lives. Every time you hear a new version of every song, and this is Whitney's musical genius. I never heard any singer to sing with her unique phrasing. She is a godess! For instance, the version of I Have Nothing in South Africa is brilliant!!!! Also, her passion and the soul in her singing, the blues and the gospel idiom she had, made her unique. Whitney was a real charismatic genius, she had a gift from God, she always said that! Advice for singers: Study her impro and phrasing and make her songs your own.
Remember when Whitney sang the Star Spangled Banner before a game? (Can’t remember the game) but oh my word…it was extraordinary. She was a true talent with such a beautiful voice. I miss her.
I'll never forget that! I was in the kitchen cooking, and I had to stop what I was doing and go into the living room to see and hear her perform, and I was blown away!! She did the best version of The Star Spangled Banner that I had ever heard!! I was floored!!
In fact, many many singers possess impeccable pitch, which is only one of her mountain of skills. I also recorded her Super Bowl performance of the Anthem. A football game is a horrible place for music. Imagine singing with a very strong 1 second delay. She simply insisted, as in ‘do it or I’m outta here’ on singing live and a floor monitor was provided. Knowing the NFL, they broadcast the playback, which was also coming from my truck. The point I’m slowly making is that her live vocal was exceptional. It is the one you heard a thousand times on radio as the Iraqi army was shocked and awed into desert sand. A very strange time in my personal history.
This is probably my favorite live Whitney performance!! She is absolutely glowing and just completely Soars! Edit: I'd love to see you do Mili from Steelheart "She's Gone" :)
I stumbled on your channel a few weeks ago and I'm loving it! You have such a gift for explaining all things musical and I've learned so much. However, what keeps me coming back is your genuine appreciation for music of any genre. It's nice to see. :)
I love listening to your analysis on singers. I remember watching a documentary on her and Cissy talking about how she made her work out for hours each day on her voice. Cissy mentioned working on her head voice, chest and using her diagrapham. She really worked on all the colors of the voice, the way an athelete trains for the olympics, is how she worked on the voice. Besides that it is definitely the emotion behind it, that takes the voice to another level. There are only so many ways of hitting certain notes but she put her soul and emotions behind it, and that brought it all to life! Vocally and performance wise, I think of her as a Shirley Bassey or Judy Garland in her prime. She's in that top class of singers. Very few can go there. Thanks for sharing and making her shine even more with your analysis of her great voice and gift.

Thanks, Fil-I am one of the many who have requested that you take a look at Whitney Houston's extraordinary talent and musical background. I can't believe it's been 10 years since she died.😔Hers was a voice for the ages, and she left us with a catalogue of outstanding recordings in multiple genres. She was also stunningly beautiful, which didn't hurt her career, but it's her magnificent instrument and hard work that were primarily responsible for her success. It's a tragedy that she struggled with untold personal demons and eventually succumbed to her addictions like many an artistic legend before and since. R.I.P. Whitney 💐

Just stunning. I Have Nothing is my favorite Whitney song, it is just so full of emotion. And actually seeing what is happening vocally - I’m speechless.
She was undoubtedly the greatest female singer of ALL TIME in my book
I agree!! And so beautiful!!
@@YARNBARF extremely beautiful
Agreed.
There is this one certain jazz singer who might have a word to say about that. Ella Fitzgerald look her up
@@whenisdinner2137 She can say what she want but she can't say it as good as Whitney
Your smiles during her performance say it all. Her life--what a tragic loss.
One if not the strongest female voice I’ve ever heard in my life. ❤
Whitney could interrupt any part of my day, her voice just builds and when the voice peeks my day just got so much better. I don't have the vocabulary to explain Whitney!
Hard not to watch this without tears in your eyes while still grinning from cheek to cheek
Tears all over my face by the end 🛐
when I was stationed in Germany in 1991 I watched on TV as Whitney sang the National Anthem at the Super Bowl and I kinda knew I wouldn't hear a better rendition at any time going forward. And I haven't. Whitney was something else.
@nelsono4315. Yes, hers is the gold standard for that performance. Bar none. ♥️
Yes, that was the year Tampa hosted the Super Bowl. Never a better performance of US National Anthem, before or since, I agree.
3 yeara before whitney gave AN even better acapella performance of the anthem in a nba game. You can find it in youtube, its unbelievable...
@@bethcrawford7427 I was there for that as well. Sadly, the NFL music ninnies insisted on her playback track for air. I’ve discussed this elsewhere in these comments if you’re interested. It was a strange moment to be a part of war celebration.
@@Luxolosisuer1elz.__991 I bet! NBA is nothing like the NFL. They have always respected musical performers. I’ll look for it.
The best singer of her generation ! I’d like to believe the world will be blessed to hears someone like her but I doubt it!
Damn, she was amazing!
No auto tuning nonsense here... Talented lady giving it everything... Just wonderful.
Had the joy of seeing her live in 1986.. she was so young then, and so gifted. Thanks for another amazing analysis!!
I could listen to you talk about Whitney’s gift for hours! Do another!
Fil, you never disappoint, you always amaze me with your appreciation and articulation of other peoples gifts. You’re the best!
Thanks!
And you always so appreciate the artists performances and talents ❤
I grew up listening to Whitney and I still can't get over that she left us so soon. She was the diva of our generation but she was so likeable!
Greatest female singer of all time, she blows everyone else out of the water.
Great analysis on what made Whitney Houston as good as she was. I have learned so much from you Fil, a sign of a good teacher is one who doesn't put their pupils to sleep. 👍
She's worth the extra time. She had an amazing voice. Thank you for giving it such a good analysis.
Fabulous analysis. She was spellbinding. Both vocals and performance.
Fil. I've listened to you for a few years. Watching and listening to your comments and the way you explain things are just as impressive as the artist's performances. Your positive enthusiasm is contagious!
The greatest natural singing voice ever!!! We miss you Whitney!!! ❤
Whitney sang with total conviction, which is why we all respond so strongly to her performances. Her soft voice is like velvet. And when she unleashed those titanium vocal chords! Yes, Lord! Sing it, girl!!!
Thank you for explaining how amazing her voice was. Her voice was a perfect combination of powerful and pleasing
Had she lived and not ruined her voice.
She was not “taken away” - she was a druggie who threw her gifts and her life away.
@@Stray.. Hear hear! I get sick and tired of people making excuses. She was a self confessed drug addict.
Prayers to her, her daughter. Her voice is one and only
@@gwendolynkaren5933 Well she couldn’t be perfect like you. None us can be perfect like you. We all have flaws except you.
@@gwendolynkaren5933
That's too bad. The gift she left the world is priceless and a Grand lesson to stay away from drugs or else.
But for anyone who cares see kat kerr video abt Whitney return to heaven.
It's an awesome welcome.
Pray/ help people while they are alive, after that, it's too late...
Whitney had a gorgeous singing voice! 💯👍👍👍
Watched her at Wembley- twice- in the 80s, she was simply incredible. Felt so saddened by the path her life took later in her life.
It's called the gospel jaw. Something black gospel singers do
@@mariahyohannes That’s really interesting. Thanks for sharing!
Then in an instand she can sound totally intimate like a croon in the ear, without losing any momentum.
One of the best vocal analysis I've watched. Very impressed by Whitney's vibrato. Please analyze her performance of Saving All my Love for You Japan 1991. Whitney, the band and the backing vocals, the solo sax - one word, masterclass.
Thanks!
@@wingsofpegasus Truly, Fil. Fantastic job on this.
Miss Whitney ❤️ Sometimes I cry thinking of how wonderful she was and how sad it is losing her and her precious daughter much too soon.
That vibrado is spot on. Oh, and her head voice🥰
Whats wrong with later
Her voice was the most beautiful thing ever. I was always mesmerized by her.
I've watched the video dozens and dozens of times - maybe hundreds of times. Always stunning, but the isolated vocals you present here are another thing altogether. Chills and tears. What a vocalist and interpreter of emotions she was. A gift to us all. Thank you for sharing this!
My god the control she had over her voice is INSANE!!! Blows me away
This is my favorite performance of Whitney and it also happens to be my favorite song of hers. Loved your explanation!
Wow, great analysis as always!
I miss her.
It was the Super Bowl. The NY Giants won. I will never forget it.
I'll never forget that! I was in the kitchen cooking, and I had to stop what I was doing and go into the living room to see and hear her perform, and I was blown away!! She did the best version of The Star Spangled Banner that I had ever heard!! I was floored!!
I was a child and I remember that. Even then, I was like “wow!”.
I'm not American, but that makes me tear up, it's just so perfect.
Whitney Houston was a magnificent singer.
Her pitch accuracy was insane. Are we sure she was human?
One word: Goosebumps!
Thanks!
This brought comfort to my soul on a tough morning. Her voice still gives me chills. I miss her so much. Thank you for this video. It was brilliant.
Phenomenal! That is such a great performance. Must have been a thrill to have experienced it live.
Beautiful... So free, so loose, so talented, natural, bold and expressive
You are a very knowledgeable man. I enjoy your breakdown. Thank you from Utah
Fucking Whitney was an icon. One of the most beautiful voices of our time. Thanks for the amazing video
Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Love You and that note! So perfect! Still gives me goosebumps down my arms.
Oh you picked a really good one!
She had an amazing voice! Beautiful and powerful!! WOW!
I don´t use to listen much of Whitney Houston but it´s completely insane the way this lady control her voice and tones... Really thanks for making me appreciate styles that I usually don´t listen, and u really love music (thou I´m not really a good guitar player) u should enoy it cause it´s just great. Greetings
R.I.P. Whitney 💐
I saw her live when she made her so emotional video at stabler arena in pennsylvania she was so beautiful and her voice is the greatest of all time in my opinion
Please talk more about that! It looked like a fun video. How was she during the breaks?
Fil, this is my absolute favorite song by her. No one, and I mean no one can do this song like Whitney. The emotion in her voice. Wow!!! She keeps digging in deeper. Thank you for looking deeper at this.
This is such a fantastic analysis. I’d love to see you do “One Moment in Time” from the Grammy’s. Or “All The Man I Need” from Welcome Home Heroes. OR “The Greatest Love Of All” from Arista 15th anniversary in 1990.
This brought instant tears of joy! Whitney was an angel ❤️
She absolutely lights me up. Her singing and performance brings me somewhere else. ❤
How nice to see BOTH your arms and hands being so expressive. Whitney's voice was a powerful expressive wonder, too, for sure. How cool to see it illustrated so clearly. ...Sadly, another music world casualty to the sticky wicket of drugs. *sigh*
*Murder
I can never listen to her without the tears flowing. Too soon gone.
