  • In "American Booger Pickers", Taryl goes over the proper way to rebuild a Kohler Magnum 20 carburetor and also other issues to look for when doing the job. Before and after the tutorial, Taryl and Junior hit up local booger collector "Elk Skins" to see what rare and expensive boogers they can pick from his snot yard. It'll take some haggling and bargaining in order to get Elk Skins to come off the ultimate booger... but can they pick it? Check it out here and see. Now There's Your Dinner!

    When the plague first hit and we couldn’t go anywhere I drug an old Huskvarna lawn tractor out of the woods to fix just so I’d have something to do. All I’d ever done to a mower before was just routine maintenance but I knew it had a valve problem when it was parked. I looked up some stuff on TH-cam and found Taryl and I fixed the moved valve guide and replaced the push rods, rebuilt the spindles, aligned the wheels by adjusting the non adjustable drag links (I figured that one out myself), put new tubes in the tires, new wheel bearings, found and replaced a bad safety switch and tomorrow I’m taking the kill wire to Radioshack (I know, but we still have one in town) and get a diode to fix it. Then I’m putting this thing up for sale and buying another broke down mower to fix off the local radio swap shop.
    Thanks Taryl.

      @@nateg5887 all the RS corporate stores died. It's only the few and far between franchise owned stores that survived.

    • @Shootingstarcomics
      @Shootingstarcomics 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! We still have one, like Erik said it was never a corporate store. Which is good because the guy that owns it knows all about radios and electronics so he can help with anything. Sometimes when he’s out of something it takes him a while to get it though because he says he has to order $700 worth of merchandise before they will send him an order now. I love the place, there are half fixed telephones and radios laying all over the counter.
      We still have a Western Auto too but it’s mostly a straight up lawnmower shop now with maybe a few bicycle parts.

    Anyone who ever said you rip people off, should go play in traffic! You are giving away tons of information about small engines, lawn mowers, lawn tractors and all sorts of gardening equipment for free! Step by step DIY guides on pretty much everything lawn equipment related for free!
    If that's not the ultimate gift to all the people that watch your videos, I don't know what is. Your videos have helped me fix my dad's lawn mower twice! My dad is not interested in cars and engines, he can do lots of home DIY, but he'd rather have the dealer fix engines and stuff for him. I like messing with engines, I'm a car guy and I enjoy working on my 2 cars, doing maintenance, etc...
    I said I want to give it a whirl, fixed the lawn mower both times (1st time it was the carburetor, 2nd time was the transmission) and saved my dad a bunch of money. All because of you! And for that I say thank you!
    Business is business, but the videos you do are so much more than entertainment.

    I did rebuilt my carb last year. It ran great BUT, it's a different story this season. My engine runs great with a little bit of choke. The fact you mentioned the fuel filter makes sense. A carb doesn't start to run on "fuel starvation" mode out of the blues. Oh well, I just learned that, even small engine shops will, inadvertently, sell cheap filters. Good point Taryl and team.

  • @jamest.5001
    @jamest.5001 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like the brass filters, like the the ones used in old carburator, on cars that are made from tiny brass beads stuck together, then sometimes machined to shape, it has very tiny holes that filter the fuel , they are less common these days! They can be difficult to clean, if they get in bad shape, I had issues with the cheap filters on a scooter, they cause carb issues on about 4 carbs!! There is some things you shouldn't skimp and cut corners on! 😀

    I removed my Kohler fuel pump on my JD Lawn Tractor. I got tired of the check valves coming loose. So I replaced it with a Chinese POS replacement from EBAY. Big mistake. The engine started to fill up with fuel after 3 uses I had gained 3/4" of oil level. Luckily I checked my oil level and caught it in time. Thanks to Taryl's advice, I removed the lever actuated pump and replaced it with a B & S pulse pump and made a small block off plate with a hose barb threaded into it. No more problems. Thank you for saving me from a blown engine Taryl!

    Interesting observation about those pleated air filters. I never would have thought about it. A couple of weeks ago I was looking at a John Deere that just wasn't running up to full power. I replaced the fuel pump and the pleated air filter, and that made all the difference. I'm thinking now it was just the filter.

    I use a little metal polish on the end of the q-tip to polish the seat and it takes the varnish right off the whole inside of the seat and it makes the needle seal if it wasn't before. I fix some pretty nasty leaky carbs that way.

    • @notajp
      @notajp 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use valve lapping compound. Sometimes I even have to put a drill bit about the same diameter as the the float needle into my drill and run it in reverse at slow speed against the seat, then polish with the lapping compound.

    Taryl Fixes All. Looks like the Kohler engine in the video has some similarities to the KT-17 Series 2 that’s in my Cub Cadet. Luckily my carburetor is gravity fed - And that’s fine by me. I’m looking forward to your upcoming video on performing a valve job.
    I’m very much looking forward to Slippers upcoming videos as well. Speaking Of Slippers, I had a bad experience with a Briggs & Stratton aftermarket fuel tank/carburetor ensemble - So I am going to try the double gasket/diaphragm fix with the OEM gas tank/carburetor that Slippers performed in one of the previous videos. And There’s You’re Dinner From Central Kentucky.
