  • Futurist Steve Tighe explains how the emergence of Post Materialism will cause a fundamental shift in how we perceive consumption, time, status and success.
These re-perceptions, aided as they will be, by the trio of trends - resource awareness, decline of want, and lifestyle dissonance - will have a vast impact on Australian society in the future.
This new paradigm stands to be the greatest driver of social change in Australia over the coming decades.
    About TEDx
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organised events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organised TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organised.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Terrific presentation - insightful and helps to better explain the underpinning reasons so many of us 'Baby Boomers' are questioning the legacy we are leaving behind for our grand kids!

This is good stuff. I think some attention should also be given to Zero Population Growth, too...you're still going to have to provide products, but the rate needs to be sustainable, and you'll have trouble achieving that unless ZPG is on the table...

I have never been a materialistic person. I much prefer having the time to think about the nature of reality and the universe :) It would be nice if that becomes the norm in the future. One things for sure, eventually computers/robots/AI will make most jobs redundant - except for the creative non-routine jobs like making movies, computer games, etc. Hopefully, as a society we can learn to share the remaining work around so everyone can live with plenty of free time.

We need a small basic income so that people will work less, but the military won't like that will they : (
