  • Stu Grover is a technologist and entrepreneur. Whilst sitting in a post grad class at the International Space University in early 2012 Stu Grover was first introduced to the idea that replacement parts could be "printed" on demand in Zero G. As a technologist and entrepreneur this concept fascinated him and he simply had to find out more. Two years on he is the owner and founder of 3D Printing Studios which is a network of high street shops setup to increase awareness of 3D Printing amongst everyday people. Stu sees a future in which 3D Printing is as much a part of our lives as computers are today but not quite so intimate.
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    seems that this guy needs to add some books of Hobbes and Hume :-)
    materialism doesn't end with design or in new ways of production;
    materialism can end(more like change) with imprinting our young population with new ideas to share everything, and move towards life not depending on getting a new thing to have a good life;
    it is tough to change our instincts or as many would say our natural behavior as animals

    its not the value or the production method its the status the kind of identity these objects represent in materialism , brand before quality / price before use

    From what I can tell, as many "TH-cam makeup gurus" there are, I don't see materialism dying. "Omg you have to try this, that, etc," same shit different packaging. Not great for the environment and thrown away or never used if they don't like it. 3D printing is still making plastic things. It's great if we would actually care about our environment, start making thing that are actually biodegradable.

      there's a growing appetite against materialism at a time when the damage of materialism is starting to hit. we haven't hit peak materialism but it will die. eventually.

    The Dark side of "Materialism" is not going away too soon. "What is the dust which obscures the mirror? It is attachment to the world,avarice, envy, love of luxury and comfort, haughtiness and self-desire; this is the dust which prevents reflection of the rays of the Sun of Reality in the mirror." ~ Abdu'l-Baha, Baha'i Faith

    ok yeh, but it still requires a lot of resources to make all those printers which will do that, and it means that all the things which are in use today will just get more and more, so its not really unfortunately.. its more so just another cheaper and more resourceful way to be materialistic.

    They're going to charge us for 3D printing. This only adds to materialism.

    2min. In and you can see him building a very weak case. Sounds like he just wants to speak. Has nothing to do with making any sense.

    Is there any importance of gold jewellery. Do we really need them. Do we really need sport cars, rolex watch, i phone, pashmina shawl, Dewan Beds, Villas & Bungalow, Do we really need an entertainment source like cinema. Shouldn't we aware of sensory illusion. What does it make sense to wear so expensive wedding gowns and suit on weddings. These all are worthless. We all are victims of technology, fashion, entertainment. We all are mislead by dopamine harmone.

    Interesting talk, but I think it sounds a bit Utopian. Even today's cheap things have expensive counter-parts that are just manufactured differently. I could buy a cheap metal chair, built in a factory by robots, or an ludicrously expensive one hand crafted by a renowned artist. I don't think 3D printing will change this.
    Also, what about the cost to acquire and/or refine the building materials? Surely something that could be made out of recycled plastic would be cheaper than something made out of palladium.
