  • Jersh reacts to the music video for Schism by Tool.
*I'm deaf in my right ear which is why I'm not wearing headphones. I know, it's a bummer not to get the panning sounds. It's also been a bummer to only have one ear my whole life for lots of other reasons, like, playing telephone growing up, I was terrible at it. But, I'll be ok, and I'm getting both channels in the earbud, thanks for your concern :)

The lead guitarist, Adam Jones, is the creative director for all of their videos. He worked in Hollywood doing SFX for a few years, notably on films like Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands, Jurassic Park, and Terminator 2.

When I saw them live in 2002, they actually brought out 4 dancers who looked like the characters from the video. And they danced from circus wires. Very trippy. Tool is the best live band by far

All of their videos are freakin bonkers!(with the exception of their very first video, Hush)
YES, they played this on television. I remember rushing home to catch the premier on MTV.
I’ve seen folks informing you of Adam’s role in making the videos. Most left out that he didn’t direct the first two videos.(Hush & Sober)
It is completely worth your time to revisit every song that you’ve heard to watch the music video. If you come across one that you haven’t heard, shoot a double reaction.

Hi Jersh! The production quality of most of the Tool songs are on a whole different level. The quality of the sound from each instrument; especially drums - it is so crisp; it is unmatched.
Also, all the little nuances and sound effects that they add just elevate the experience drastically. I highly recommend listening to all of their songs with some great quality headphones, someday. It'll open a whole new window of appreciation for this band.

Saw Schism live in 2001 on the debut tour of this album. They had performers come out naked (1 Male, 1 female) and walk around on all fours swinging their heads like the actors in the video. Only to disappear and come out of what looked like nylon cocoons upside down from the ceiling. Slowly undulating and dancing in the air until closer to the end, as the music picked up, the dancing became violent finally to be drawn apart from each other towards the ceiling, released, and slammed together as the song ended and everything went dark. You have to go to a Tool show.

@@SuperJersh I'm enjoying your reaction videos and analyses very much; I'm 58 years old, a retired prek teacher from Tx and a long time Tool fan. My son was 31 when he died, he loved groups like Cannibal Corpse and Deicide, ha, in his 20s but also loved The Killers, Bad Religion, Muse, Opeth, System of a Down, Nirvana, etc. And I got him into The Eagles and Neil Young and Led Zeppelin, etc. in his late 20s; we used to buy vinyl albums together and sit and listen to them for hours sometimes and do analyses and critiques of our own. I miss him terribly. My daughter is going to be 31 soon and she loves Tool and Pearl Jam, etc. But she never has time to watch reaction videos, ha! She would probably enjoy yours. My condolences on your own loss, in the past 6 years I've lost my mom, my son, and 4 other extended family members so my heart goes out to you. Losing my son was the hardest, I confess.

@Dexy Chan Amen to that, my son's birthday was 2 days ago, he would be 36 now, so it was a melancholy day for me. But I lit a candle for him and played 'Smile Like You Mean It' by The Killers, one of his fave songs by them. It deals with time's passage and being a ghost of our own history in a sense, and after he died of a heart attack in my living room and I found him still warm but couldn't save him, that song took on a whole other dimension for me. Daniel had depression and mental illness and self-medicated with alcohol; at rehab he aspirated during detox, wss in arrest and then a coma on a ventilator for days, woke up and lived for one more year but he'd sustained heart and lung damage. He lived with me as he became more and more ill, it was so painful yet so precious, those nights of us talking and listening to music till 3 am. Thank you for letting me share this. I know what you mean, my mom fought till her last breath at 78 to live for all her kids and grandkids and my stepdad and it seemed so surreal when she finally lost her fight. My brother lost his wife after 40+ years together a year after my son died, and I feel the pull of my own age as I near 60 and still have my 32 year old special needs autistic daughter living with me. All my family is either dead or too old and ill to take her in if something happened to me, and her mental age is 6 years old so I worry what might happen to her with me gone. Her dad never had much to do with her so I don't know if he would take her if I died. Her younger sister is my only other child, she turns 31 in 2 weeks but she lives hundreds of miles away and has her own life and shouldn't have to be responsible for her sister's care. I have my special needs daughter on a waiting list for a group home but it's years long as far as applicants for the limited openings. It feels like I was 32 myself just a breath ago, sigh and now I feel weary and sad and just want to talk to my son and sig and have coffee with my mom. Music is my escape and salvation so many times.

Check out Jersh's reactions to Deftones also! Like Tool, they're a great band who are ahead of their time as well.

As always, Tool can be interpreted in a lot of ways. Here parts of what I understand in this awesome song: "isms" are ideologies that have the tendencies to divide us. Notice the churchbell that starts in the "cold silenence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion" part - people didn't speak up about the cruelty that divided us in sinners, blasphemics, et cetera. This merciless cruelties atrophies compassion so much that we eventuelly would make it an event to look witches burn or drowned. Yet, we are all the "same", only divided by ideologies, you can put this example I mapped out on countless of "isms" and see through their dividing nature.
To the video: I picture these little fellows as these poisonous believes that "disintegrates" us from others and ourselves, ultimately struggling to get rid of them (beliefsystems) to come back to our very foundation, the raw clay that we all are made of, thus they are merging at the end, to show that without these isms there isn't actually anything that divides us.
Sorry for my not so good english 🙏

It’s a baby-please-don’t-go / breakup song. Schism is the divide between two strongly opposed parties.

i get a lot of shit because people think theres no depth to Tool, or metal music in general. I laugh and tell them that they would be shocked into silence if they knew how deep it goes.

I don't think I noticed how strange this video was at the time. I was already a fan of Tool and used to their videos looking like this. Also was big into stop-motion in general, Jan Svankmajer, Brothers Quay etc... So this was just more good stuff from Tool for me. But yes, they are a special band, although collective art opus is probably a better description of them.
