For Lex's question about time signatures, she is describing both polymeters and polyrhythms. Polymeters are when the time signature changes, and yes this song is one of the best examples of that as it has dozens of meter changes. The main riff that she alluded to constantly switches between 5/8 and 7/8 (though you could technically rewrite that as 12, it doesn't really feel like the song is in 12 so most people wouldn't do that), but there are some others in there as well. The other thing is polyrhythm, which is when they are playing multiple time signatures over each other at the same time. Tool does this a lot, and there are some parts of this song that do it as well like the ending breakdown when he sings "between supposed lovers" where the drums go to 4/4 while the guitars stay in that weird 5/8-7/8, but that is not what is going on in the main riff that she hummed.
The best way to conceptualize the time is as Duples and Triples. The 8th note remains steady. Count "One and Two and uh One and Two and Three and". One bar of 5/8 (one Duple, one Triple) then one bar of 3/4 (three Duples) is how I would write it out. Quarter, Quarter, Eighth | Quarter, Quarter, Quarter. I suppose it could be 11/8 but why? lol. In "classical" world I played in, I call these "8th not pulse" songs, and the composer arranger writes them as double and triple 8th notes.

I can’t believe this song is over 20 years old now. I remember my local radio station building up to a new Tool song for a few hours before playing it! I was in awe when I heard it! Went out and bought the new album Lateralus at Hastings the day it came out. Then 5 years later I heard Rosetta Stoned, mid blown! Time flies! Amazing band!
@@slightlyoffensivesob4690 same here and I always liked that they had rare stuff, for example they would have album single cd releases sometimes, really cool finds like that you would never see at other retailers.
Took me 10 years to really pay attention to the lyrics because I always got swept away by the music. It's like the tide breaking against the rocks. Time signature goes 12/8 to 5/8 to 7/8✌️♥️
Lex is sharp! She discovered the higher order mathematics of the structure of TooL ! It’s trippy and resonates in your DNA. Just close your eyes and fly.
There are parts of TooL songs where Danny is playing in two different time signatures then Justin and Maynard are in a different time from Danny and Adam all the while in a different time as well. Most popular music have all the instruments in the same time signature. Tool does the polyrhythmic composition as well as it can be done.
You absolutely need to react to the live drum cam version of Tools drummer Danny Carey playing the song "Pneuma". It will blow your mind how amazing their drummer is!
YES 😂😂🤣🤣. This is my Favorite Tool Song. This song has a very intriguing time signature. The verses can be counted as 12/8 (12 eighth-note beats to a measure) but it is actually split up into recurring measures of 5/8 (5 eighth-note beats to a measure) and 7/8 (7 eighth-note beats to a measure). In this way, the standard 12/8 time signature is split into two parts, a "Schism" thus the theme of the music matches the theme of the lyrics. 😁❤🤘
In this episode of Brad & Lex, Ominous tones build to brief silence before a bass guitar leads to electric accompanied by dark stray chords sending the couch couple into an intersection met by Maynard James Keenan. He, the unorthodox drum patterns, beautiful dark riffs and harmonies will drive Lex into temporary "air guitar bops" complete with praises and bar measures while the ever so cool, analytical Brad cruises the road with a sedated "side to side sway".
I’ve watched a couple of these videos now, I’m amazed at how insightful she is! The way she picked up on the time signature. It’s actually more complex than she was able to tell, but she picked up on it immediately
Tool=(1/3Rush+1/4Pink Floyd+1/4Led Zeppelin+1/6Metallica)🤘🖖✌️That is what they reminded me of BEFORE 10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum. On those last two they took that recipe(like all the best ingredients from each one of them)and truly became their own true TOOL self. Original, distinctive, mysterious and HEAVY, although light when necessary for the song. But yeah, by far one of the best bands around today, and to see in concert.🥇❤️👍🎸🥁🎹🎤👌
Going to see them in a couple of weeks. One of the greatest visual experiences you will ever see. One of the few concerts where seats further from the stage are better in order to take it all in.
@Ken Fifer you are not wrong about that. Rush was very similar in that way, and any time I got to see them twice on the same tour I would try to get tickets for one show close as possible to watch them play, and the other a bit back in the arena or amphitheater to take in the whole visual side of it.🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎤🎹
The tool rabbit hole is the best, seeing them in February, great great band! Check out The Pot (don’t do the music video), one of their best and great for new listeners! 🔥
I saw Tool in the 90s. The Flaming Lips opened for'm. (They had bubbles) Maynard took off his pants. Craazy time! Recommended highly, if you ever go back in time
@@connorpierce7618 I'm driving south soon. I want to see them again. I saw them 5-6 times back in the day. It's been looong minute, like 15+ years easy.
Lex’s shrooms definitely kicked in in the middle of the song and then she latched onto the key behind Tool’s sound. The way they layer and shift time signatures! Nice! Brad just smoked some Salmon River OG and went down the rabbit hole with the lyrics. Great reaction!
Yes Lex, they use both multple "time signatures/meters" after one another AND also "polyrythms" which are different signatures at the same time (drums counting in 4 and guitars in 5 for example)
Music has a time signature. Pop songs and straight rock songs and most country is in 4/4 or 4 beats per measure which makes it easy to tap our feet, it’s a simple groove. This song is alternating between odd time signatures. The song begins with two bars of 5/4, followed by one bar of 4/4, followed by bars of alternating 5/8 and 7/8, until the first interlude, which consists of alternating bars of 6/8 and 7/8.
Yes, this song changes time signatures a LOT. In the sequence you are talking about, they are basically flipping back and forth from 5/8 and 7/8. So the bass for example is playing two extra notes in the same time frame, every other time. (you don't always have to play extra notes, but in this case he is) This kind of creates that layered feeling and slight Yo-Yo effect, which makes it feel like the song is speeding up and slowing down rapidly over and over again.
I love how in-tune (no pun intended) is with the music picking up on the timing of the song w/o being sure of it. Definitely a musical mind there. To quote Brad: "yes." Good answer.
Just keep on going with the Tool! Love it. A Tool show is definitely somethin special. I've had the opportunity to see em twice. A+ More Deftones & Sevendust too!!
95+ percent of all music is written in common (or standard) timing. You can easily click consistently to the same pattern like counting to 4 over and over. Tool starts with odd timings that specifically breaks that smooth consistency (counting to 5 then 7 in this song). Lots of artists can do these things, but when they do, it usually sounds intentionally complex and noticeable. However, these guys are so good with their instruments they smooth it back out to sound very approachable. Collectively it results in your brain not fully following the timing of the song but feeling like it's still very smooth and planned out. Then they add moody minor key, Maynard's "Gregorian chant" style voice and brilliant lyrics plus of course Danny killing it on drums and Justin playing interesting and complex bass lines. Yeah, once in a lifetime band these guys. So glad you keep reacting to them! Thank you.

Nah dude, Tool is thinking man's rock, like Pink Floyd. Ad Nauseum is thinking man's metal. Like Voivod. There's a difference. For starters, rock involves less brain damage. You should note, I'm a Teitanblood and Caveman Cult fan. So maximum brain damage Tool are awesome though
The poetry that comes from the squaring off between and the circling is worth it. This tells you the basis of the entire song. Its hidden and only those who know will realize the true meaning he was trying to express
As an avid puzzle solver (and sometimes creator), the line "I know the pieces fit" resonates with me. A schism is something that separates, so the song is about reestablishing communication to bring us all back together, countering what separates us. At least, that's what I got out of it.
I suppose it could be 11/8 but why? lol.
Tool is touring right now, they'll be in florida February 8-10th, Tampa on the 9th. Ive seen them a half dozen times, always a fantastic show, they play about an hour and 40 or so and thats it, no encore, once they start throwing picks and sticks you can head for the car.

Oh, I loved her reaction. She is right and she is very good. She got it. They do very complicated signature changes, but it's not just the signatures. Everything is complicated. Music, lyrics, energy. Everything. I also understand his reaction. It's not an easy song to grasp.
LEX ,, that was a great question, it’s called a polyrhythm it’s a change of different time signatures, at the same time so it sounds like two different tracks but it’s really Danny Carey just kicking ass on the drums🤘🏼❤️❤️❤️🤘🏼
Small correction: polymetric is when a song changes between different time signatures. Polyrhythm is when different signatures are being played concurrently.
9:06 They"re "jumping" indeed, one snippet in a different meter after the other (in series). Mostly just one bar even. It's not a polymeter or a polyrhythm (rhythms in parallel together). Lexes counting of "I know + the pieces fit" is spot on. It is just 2.5 + 3.5 beats. A beat lasts a quarter note, so the verse is 1 bar of 5/8, alternated with 1 bar of 7/8. There are a lot of other meter changes too, though.
This song is jumping between time signatures. To hear what Lex is talking about at the end of the video, listen to White Zombie - Black Sunshine. There, the bass is playing one steady time signature while the drums are playing a different one and both time signatures sync with each other at different intervals.
"“Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion between supposed lovers, between supposed brothers." has to be one of the best lines put down in music "
used to feel the same but he’s really trying to understand on definitely a more effort based comprehension but it’s clearly two different personalities connecting ultimately to what is music. biased but beautiful. i dig how he’s reading from left to right and it’s sorta refreshing. Love your reaction Lex!! Not only are you just absolutely adorable but you FEEL the music like us in the Tool Army which makes us so happy!! You get it and it's so much fun to watch!! And yes yes yes 🙌 Live Tool must be experienced ❤ Brad, well I got nothing... Lol 😁
I read that Maynard James Keenan (vocals) wrote the lyrics to 'Schism' about Tool's internal disconnect... It took 5 years to make this record 'Lateralus' in 2001, and during that time, a frustrated Maynard started a new band A Perfect Circle in 2000, just to keep himself in the game... The lyrics reflect his state of mind that he wanted Tool to be a working unit as they were in the past ("I know the pieces fit...") cause there seems to be a breakdown between him and the band... It took 13 years for Tool to release their current album 'Fear inoculum'...
The difference between Lex’s experience and Brad’s experience is the clear difference between “getting” TOOL and not getting it… love to see it! TOOL is no easy experience to comprehend and feel, but Lex is getting and feeling this shit!
I generally don't recommend Tool's official videos for first time listeners - WAY too distracting. They are so trippy you usually have to either focus on the music or the video, but can't do both, and the focus needs to be on the music for a first time listener. They are weird enough sometimes to be off-putting also. It would be a shame to have the experience ruined because you didn't appreciate the video.
Tool is the most unique, intelligent, interesting, complex, technical, precise, and lots of other positive adjectives, band I've ever had the pleasure to listen to!!!
Yes!! Signature change! They find groove rather than just driving ahead. Its math rock from the roots of the likes of rush. These guys live is a whole thing. Treat yourselves!
Saw Tool in Montreal back in 2017. Well worth the price of admission! They are AMAZING live. Maynard tends to stay in the shadows, at least he did during that show. I would definitely go see them again! \m/
Not only is TOOL the best band on the planet right now that have th, best drummer and vocalist on the planet! As a whole they are one of the best bands i have ever heard! The timing and different beats timed to a much higher count then 99.999% of the rest of the bands in existance! They are just awesome!!! Id love to see many more TOOL video's!
To hear TOOL in person is to be baptized in the bass while the subtle guitar guides you, the words resonating within you, and the drums reminding you that you are alive, to not waste your precious gift of life, to keep beating the wardrums, spiraling onward
i didn't see anyone answer this, but the main riff of the song is alternating measures of 5/8 and 7/8. there's almost 50 time signature changes in the song.

My 21y son intro'd me to Tool in early 2000s. This is the one song he played and I was hooked. ❤
Maynard is a genius!! 👍🏽
Thats Awesome. Kudos to your kid
The whole band are geniuses
Tool is probably the only band I enjoy watching people react to. They are musical geniuses and heavily under rated.
I absolutely love Lex’s analogies, and Brad’s reaction to them. Keep on keeping on you two wonderful human beings.
Lex: "Ooh, I love TOOL!"
Me: "Welcome to the club, girl. They're one of a kind!"
Took me 10 years to really pay attention to the lyrics because I always got swept away by the music. It's like the tide breaking against the rocks. Time signature goes 12/8 to 5/8 to 7/8✌️♥️
Great way to describe... feel like know one pays attention to tides breaking.... rocks
As for her query at the end, I'd say like the main riff does indeed go back and forth between 5/8 and 7/8 like she thought.
Lex is sharp! She discovered the higher order mathematics of the structure of TooL !
It’s trippy and resonates in your DNA. Just close your eyes and fly.
Lex's metaphors are freaking awesome.
"Tool finds the nuts in your chunky peanut butter." Classic!. They are the greatest band ever. Spiral out you two! Spiral out! 🌀👆🇺🇲🤘
I concur, The greatest band ever!!!!
Yep
I’ve seen TOOL live 6 times over the last twenty years, and yes, you would love to hear this in person, Lex.
Rona destroyed my second chance to see them 2 years ago. Stupid Vid... First time was absolutely Magical though.
@@juicesghost8501 The Rona cost me tickets to see both Tyler Childers and Billy Strings. Happily, both venues were good with refunds.
Beautiful narration.
Awesome narration, but that is the bass of Justin not an acoustic guitar, the rest is spot on though.
accuracy level 100
Just saw them in SF last night. As always, great concert, exceptional musicians.
I'll be seeing them in Tampa on February 9th... Cant wait for this show.
lol they are terrible
@@Alix777. Not hardly, no one sounds like them, they are for musicians not some commercial sounding metal. Metallic is terrible.

Lex: "Their music is so fantastic!" Yes it is. Yes it is. I CAN NOT wait to see them in concert next week. Expecting awesomeness.
Lex finding the correlation of time signatures is amazing. It's all math. Every single bit of it.
My favorite Tool song…”Ticks and Leeches” it’s a pretty underrated song.
Great song but you gotta ease people into certain Tool songs.
@@Statelessradar that's true...although the lyrics on this song are pretty straight forward😀!
@@Statelessradar yeah it’s pretty intense.
Awesome song🤙🤙🤙🤙
I’ve watched a couple of these videos now, I’m amazed at how insightful she is! The way she picked up on the time signature. It’s actually more complex than she was able to tell, but she picked up on it immediately
That whole album is great. For a great analysis of Tool's structure of this song see Rick Beato's Ep 15.
Beato!
@@jeremyedwards1093 Lex already figured out there was a 5/4 part - so Beato is the next step.
One of the few concerts where seats further from the stage are better in order to take it all in.
nice! where they playing?
@@johnhilton529 Dallas...can't wait!
I saw them last week. Absolutely awesome show!

I love that brad and lex can listen from completely different angles of a Tool piece...and still get the same message.
The tool rabbit hole is the best, seeing them in February, great great band! Check out The Pot (don’t do the music video), one of their best and great for new listeners! 🔥
Which show you hitting in February? I’ll be at the NOLA show on the 5th
I saw Tool in the 90s. The Flaming Lips opened for'm. (They had bubbles) Maynard took off his pants. Craazy time! Recommended highly, if you ever go back in time
Seen em live and I was HUGELY disappointed
@@connorpierce7618 I'm driving south soon. I want to see them again. I saw them 5-6 times back in the day. It's been looong minute, like 15+ years easy.
6000.00 for the seats i occupied in 2006 both boston and hartford. they were 90 then ...inflation!>?
Yup. The Best Prog metal band of our Time. GENIUS!!!
Absolute masterpiece by Tool. Aenima, Lateralus and 10,000 Days are all worth listening to from front to back.
I would add Fear Inoculum to the list. My favorite Tool album. :)
One of my favorite songs by Tool!! Excellent choice!
the addition of the x files theme music while lex is trying to decipher the time signatures is pure gold 😂😂😂
Lex is such a rocker! I often find myself saying, "Yes, ma'am. That is correct."
She rocks out the right way.
Tool is AMAZING live... I definitely recommend checking them out, now that you've joined the Tool Army :)
Tool fans are the worst
More Deftones & Sevendust too!!
Thank you.
i like how lex appreciates the nuance of tool music
Hiiii!! I'm a fellow stoner melanin metal head! I got chills when I saw this title!!!! H by Tool is dope a coworker of mines weeks ago asked me what's my fav music and I said I'ma metal head and still as 26 listening to metal for over 14 years ppl still say "wow I would have never imagined you listen to heavy music" expect the unexpected :3 just like you guys thank you for posting awesome content! Much love and peace!!!
Tool is the thinking man's metal lol. Yes, Lex. Tool has trippy odd time signatures. Very progressive metal.
Nah dude, Tool is thinking man's rock, like Pink Floyd. Ad Nauseum is thinking man's metal. Like Voivod. There's a difference. For starters, rock involves less brain damage.
You should note, I'm a Teitanblood and Caveman Cult fan. So maximum brain damage
Tool are awesome though
The poetry that comes from the squaring off between and the circling is worth it. This tells you the basis of the entire song. Its hidden and only those who know will realize the true meaning he was trying to express
They are on tour now. Go check em out. One of the best bands I've ever seen. Entire thing is out of body. Amazing
As an avid puzzle solver (and sometimes creator), the line "I know the pieces fit" resonates with me.
A schism is something that separates, so the song is about reestablishing communication to bring us all back together, countering what separates us. At least, that's what I got out of it.
I suppose it could be 11/8 but why? lol.
Tool is touring right now, they'll be in florida February 8-10th, Tampa on the 9th. Ive seen them a half dozen times, always a fantastic show, they play about an hour and 40 or so and thats it, no encore, once they start throwing picks and sticks you can head for the car.
Saw them last night in SF. Amazing show. Got a 108$ parking ticket during the show and I’m not even mad. 🤣

Oh, I loved her reaction.
She is right and she is very good. She got it. They do very complicated signature changes, but it's not just the signatures. Everything is complicated. Music, lyrics, energy. Everything.
I also understand his reaction. It's not an easy song to grasp.
My son and just saw Tool live last week, what an amazing live performance and experience.
She is exactly right with her analogies about in between the lines. The grout line was pure.
Lex you are right on with changing time signatures. Listen to Lateralus it uses the Fibonacci sequence.
I would pay to go to lex and Brad first tool concert just to watch them have their minds blown!
@@pro-v7500 Thanks for the correction and the input🤘🏼🤘🏼
@@pro-v7500 this!
Syncopation is the term you're looking for. :) Tool are masters at it, as are bands like Rush, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, & ELP.
"“Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion between supposed lovers, between supposed brothers." has to be one of the best lines put down in music
"
Brad is such a damn rock. People only watch these videos for Lex's reaction, let's be honest lol.
used to feel the same but he’s really trying to understand on definitely a more effort based comprehension but it’s clearly two different personalities connecting ultimately to what is music. biased but beautiful. i dig how he’s reading from left to right and it’s sorta refreshing. Brad takes in that punk rock from Cali like a natural though i must say! Brad would dig some more Tony Hawk punk like unwritten Law or some more mainstream Blink? dude ranch era
@@lustalgia... Facts! The combo is what I like the best from this channel, even though I can personally relate to the emotive and candid nature of Lex's reaction, I still very much identify with Brad's urge to understand the lyrics on a deeper level. True. I guess I can just relate to Lex more, how she more emotional with music. I guess I just don't understand how someone can literally not move a muscle while listening to tool.. lol
@@ElonRogan Fair! That's why I usually go all furrowed brow analytical on subsequent listens after I've "felt" it.

You're right lex, Tool live is one of the greatest experiences
Been binge watching y'all all week at work, and now you're reacting to the song I would suggest! One of the trippiest and most profound bands ever!
Tool is performing in Florida in February, one of best concerts you will ever see.
Tool is touring right now. You should catch a show as I don’t imagine they’ll be touring too much longer. And yes, their time signatures are wild.
The difference between Lex’s experience and Brad’s experience is the clear difference between “getting” TOOL and not getting it… love to see it! TOOL is no easy experience to comprehend and feel, but Lex is getting and feeling this shit!
Tool is polyrhythmic. You can’t really tap your foot to it. It’s smart and so well designed.
you have to tap, you just cant count!
They find the nuts in your chunky peanut butter...🤣😂🤣
Great reaction & review you two!..👍👍
I was hoping you'd react to the official video. It's a total trip!
I really missed them flames at the end...
@@garyco766 While this is true, it's still fun to watch first-timer's jaws drop. 😁

Tool is my favorite band of all time. I’ve listened to them since sober dropped in the 90s. I still find new sounds in their music.
