They write and record and produce the music down to nearly finishing the mix before Maynard the singer writes the lyrics. The music is first and then he writes his lyrics around the first experience he has listening through the song. He writes how he will sing it and then fills in the lyrics that work. He is a genius, I mean they are all masters at their best.
During the period of the writing/recording sessions for the Lateralus album, the band had nearly broke up a few times. A lot of the lyrical content for the album is reflective of the internal atmosphere at the time.
They were never at a point where they were considering breaking up. They were going through a lawsuit where an artist friend of theirs thought he deserved rights to some artwork he collaborated with Adam on. Of course, dragging them through court dissolved the relationship... I don't think this song is about any of that.

The meaning and reason for the name “Tool” has shifted through the years as the band has matured and grown as adults. When they started the band they were in their late 20s. Basically a “Tool” is another way of saying someone’s a dick or literally a man’s dick. Their first Demotape from 1991 “72826” had a cover of a wrench with two lug nuts at the bottom, you get the idea. Through the years they have said many times they want their music to help people heal and grow within themselves, they want to be a TOOL for people to improve themselves and basically be respectful to others. Basically don’t be a Tool! 😅😂

Lol, AFAIK you had the right terms, just a bit mixed up...Amanda was correct that the drum is doing a roll (Rhythmic hits in quick succession) instead of a fill (Improvised playing in-between rhythmic measures) but the drummer Danny likes his poly-rhythms so it can often sound like a fill when it's not...and you were close with "Hammer Pull"...you are actually combining two versions of the same idea, "Hammer-ons" where you play a note then afterward press your finger down hard on a fret to change the sound...and "Pull-offs" where you play the note with the string held down, then release it while it's still vibrating to change the sound...
Tool is a symbol for progress. Something we use to overcome obsticles and boundries. From an evolutionary perspective using tools is what seperates humans from animals. In a way music can be a tool aswell. Perfect band name.
I see this song as an evolution of Pushit (from earlier album, Aenima) - which deals with similar themes in a more frustrated and angry way, whereas this song seems to be trying to look at those same issues from a different angle with a hope for reconciliation and healing
This song is about the band and them knowing this is what their music is supposed to sound like. It’s a struggle to get where they’re going, including losing Paul along the way but that it’s worth it in the end. And no one that likes rock music could argue that.

Whether this song is about family, friends, relationships, society, coworkers, etc, the message applies to it all. Almost every single song that Maynard writes serves this purpose with the exception of a small handful of songs.
