    Amiga hobby was always expensive sport. Back in a glory days price was driven less by supply and demand laws but more due R&D capital being returned on small production volume. Today, for those still engaged in the scene, it's more profit driven than ever, mostly fueled by crowd that are financially wealthy and willing to spent on this toys.
    You have to define a strict budget for a dedicated project and decide if it's worth of risk - how badly you want to build such thing and does it meet your final purpose.
    I see some valid points in your CM1500+ assessment (mechanical inaccuracies for officially supported motherboards, lack of explicit public info for PSU form factor, suboptimal A1200 mounting) even though most if not all can be mitigated. This is something I expected when I purchased the same unit for my new beefed up A500++ config 2 years ago.
    This particular experience made me change my end game experience from 'recommending without exception' towards 'only for hardcore Amiga crowd'.
    If you're building a classic hardware Amiga setup (including some FPGA based accelerators) then CM1500 has no competition, while ITX case options might be better route for emulated and non-classic hardware implementations.

      Yea, I can see what your saying, however , I have just built up another 1200 in my "junky to funky" video and this was a far better experience, I agree that this case is for the hard-core amiga crowd with a high budget and a 3d printer to mitigate......

    Shame about the case. Glad you powered through the build 😊. Tbh thought it made me lOl in places. Well done looks the part certainly. Keep up the excellent work buddy

      Yea its a very disappointing case for the large amount of money it costs, does look nice once assembled....

    I have built 2 Checkmate "Plus" cases, which is what this is. Not had a problem with either of them. The manual is very good, and the motherboard is adequately supported when everything is installed. It also explains in the manual very clearly about there only being one screw support on one side of the backplate due to the PSU socket being in the way on the A1200 motherboard.

    • @CaptainCommodore
      @CaptainCommodore  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Adequately?? Hmm, well if you believe the board flapping around is Adequate, then fine, and if yours is supported properly also fine, I suspect that "Adequately" is somewhat subjective, If you are happy with your purchase then that's fine too, however, I'm not, I don't believe the ultra high price point reflects the lack of quality from the product, the other points I raise are also quite valid too although you only pick up on the one point.....

    • @mxcum167
      @mxcum167 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CaptainCommodore Actually, I think you'll find I picked up on two points. However you were moaning about quite a lot, and punctuating every sentence with expletives that the video made for quite difficult viewing. So whilst I'm sure you raised some other, in your opinion, 'valid points', I felt it was no longer worth my time to watch.

    • @CaptainCommodore
      @CaptainCommodore  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @mxcum167 so you didn't watch the whole video "despite the stark warning at the beginning" and based your response on click through...... however, This video wasn't made for , or even people like you, it was one person's experience with the product, whilst you are happy to pay a high price for a product with serious design flaws , I'm not...... and it would seem there are people on both sides of the fence........ if my language offends you, don't watch, its that simple........ but at least learn to read the warning at the beginning........

    • @mxcum167
      @mxcum167 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CaptainCommodore My response was based on the content of the video that I did watch. Your language doesn't offend me. If it did, I would not have watched, as I did see your warning. I just think there are better ways to get your point across, without alienating a large proportion of potential viewers. For instance, my 10 year old daughter and I quite often watch retro computing videos together on the weekend, however this is one that I will not be able to show her, despite it being a relevant subject to something we have built.
      Interesting that you say the video wasn't made for people like me. I would argue the TH-cam algorithm disagrees with you, as your video appeared on my home page, based on the types of content that I watch.
      You'll notice that in my comments I haven't once disagreed with your view that these cases are expensive, that is because I agree with you, and I also agree it is probably to do with the lack of alternatives.

    • @CaptainCommodore
      @CaptainCommodore  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @mxcum167 the expense is one of several factors I ran into, with all those being in the video, there's no single point with this case as I clearly ran into multiple issues.
      My language isn't put on to alienate people, it's simply my normal way of talking, I am of course aware that many people dislike that but that's why I made the disclaimer.......

    I was considering the Checkmate case for my mini-ITX Denise A500+ build. But seeing the problems with it and considering the high price, I think I'll go for a regular "nice" miniITX case instead, and treat myself to some nice expensive add ons with the change (and still be quids in!)

    • @CaptainCommodore
      @CaptainCommodore  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I completely agree, there are some very nice mini itx cases out there and these are generally far higher quality than the checkmate, I recently used a cheap Chinese one for my jammix mister fpga build and was very impressed

    • @another3997
      @another3997 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CaptainCommodoreThat's true, if you only want an ITX motherboard. However, very few cases are designed for anything else, and even fewer are designed to be truly multipurpose. You should always buy the product that best suits your needs, so if something doesn't suit you, nobody would criticise you. Personally, I don't need or want any of the Checkmate products, but I hear a great many people are very happy with their Checkmate cases... and at least they give people another choice. If people buy the wrong product, it's usually (but not always) their own fault. 😁

    • @CaptainCommodore
      @CaptainCommodore  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @another3997 the idea of the checkmate is good but whilst their are no doubt many people that are satisfied, is that because of the lack of amiga options ?? The points I highlight in the video are mostly solvable but none should even exist at this astronomical price point

    I have this case in Black for an A500. It has been a pita to build! I have had to jiggle things about, I had to get a frame printed for a gotek. I wanted a disk drive and gotek side by side. I fitted them, would not line up! I had to swap them around and some how they lined up? My case had a bent drive bench (not sure what else you call it?) I reached out to the checkmate creator (they sell the cases also) and I was blanked! nothing not even a reply. I would also like to mention your case is not the mini version it is the same as mine, its the full sized one!

      @RetroJay1974 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Forgot to add! I also own the original Checkmate 1500. The true amiga case has always been the Commodore 2000/1500, nothing will beat that one and they should have re-created that case.

    • @CaptainCommodore
      @CaptainCommodore  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I do have the full size one ( I just used a pic of the mini box ) these things are very very expensive and I believe the price is far beyond the quality of what you get, didnt have it in the video but the lid is a complete pain in the arse to remove too.......

    • @another3997
      @another3997 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@CaptainCommodore You should have read and watched the large number of reviews BEFORE buying. These are small scale production runs on a niche product, so prices will always be higher than mass produced items... that's just basic economics.

    • @CaptainCommodore
      @CaptainCommodore  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @another3997 I agree, small batch runs will be higher priced, however , I represent a typical user, and I believe people deserved to see the problems I ran into, nothing you have said mitigates the problems I ran into, but it may help someone else make an informed choice.......

    I have no direct experience of thes cases, and I don't ever see myself needing one... but you said in the video this is the "mini" version, and complained quite loudly that it wasn't "mini". But this is the full size version isn't it? Did you bother checking that there weren't just a couple standoffs missing from the kit? Having a missing part happens with plenty of other products, no matter how expensive. These cases are designed to take a wide variety of form factors, and each requires different mounting positions. Surely a quick phone call or email to the vendor should sort out any problems or queries? I appreciate that would involve some extra time and effort... and to be honest, you don't seem like the most patient of people.

    • @CaptainCommodore
      @CaptainCommodore  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is the full sized version, ( and what I expected ) however the box says mini, it wasn't a complaint, I believe they make a mini itx version too, the standoffs are female receptacles pressed into the steel and a hex M-F screws into these, there are quite a few in the bottom of the case to support all options, I truly believe that the compromises made to support as many boards as possible has led to some questionable design decisions, did you watch the whole video ?
