I have been doing similar repairs on two NTSC Amiga 500s over the last few weeks, and the way I resolved my non-functioning keys was to glue a little strip of conductive copper tape onto the bottom of the plunger. What I found using a multimeter was that the original conductive rubber had either extremely high resistance, or no continuity at all.
Another trick is to paint some of that electric paint onto the pads of the membrane for extra conductivity.
You may also want to check continuity and resistance between different pads on the membrane to make sure you don’t have a broken or degraded trace anywhere.
Keep going! That keyboard is absolutely fixable. :)

The problem with the one leg on each capacitor is that it is the one attached to the ground plane. The copper substrate dissipates the heat. The solution, I have found, is higher heat with a short dwell time so not to burn the board. Pain in the arse, for sure.

I recapped an Amiga 500 two weeks ago and can attest that this method is effective. :)

Lovely. Always good seeing a machine being repaired like this.

Hi, nice Video and nice tinkering. When soldering to pcbs i recommend to use more flux and a little more heat so you don't have that pickling noses at the solderjoints. 😉

Thanks! This is why I love making videos, I get to make a thing and people with actual know how can give tips that are useful to what I’m doing. I really appreciate it. I didn’t know if it was too hot or not hot enough.

Great video as always! Now I want a Mojito.... also -- cracked me up when I saw ya jamming out in the reflection at the end when the games were playing haha.

😆 I didn’t even pay attention to my reflection, I’m glad I was doing something interesting.

Great video Jeremy! The HD option can stay pretty true to the original too. I installed the GVP side slot add on. That allows extra ram, the HD and a scsi interface and still be period specific! Even added on scsi a cd rom drive. I now have the 1992 Amiga I always wanted when I was 12!

Great video, hope to see more like this and more Amiga in general. You got another subscriber! 😀

21:36 The pixel flickering from the Pi Zero can be fixed with a high quality HDMI cable. Thickness probably helps. For DVI I used a 'BLUERIGGER' cable but for HDMI I don't know what brand/model is good. Need to get that RGB2HDMI adapter. Thanks for the video. Suggest you practice saying 'going to' instead of 'gonna' it sounds better.

    Firstly, great video.
Secondly, I mainly use the A1200 myself and although I find it a great games machine it is also great at creative software to make music, animation and images. I'm not sure if these were used on the A500 but might be worth looking up "Octamed" (for music or MOD files as they are known on Amiga). There were several versions and each one had a different layout. I use V4 if memory serves me correct. Also "Duluxe Paint" as an art package. You can do some amazing stuff on there if you research a manual and put some time in. Best of luck with it mate. Facebook also has loads of Amiga groups that are all willing to give good advice. I help to run one of them with a friend. 👍

    Great video Jermery.
The Amiga can be a pain to solder in with its large ground planes but you did a good job in the end. One the keyboard issue I wonder if it could be a cracked trace on the membrane? You said it worked once when you just used the plunger on the membrane yourself, I wonder if that bent it slightly allowing contact. I've had some luck before repairing a membrane by using a conductive ink pen. Might be worth looking at as the pens aren't expensive (it was about £15).
Also have to love the pi HDMI solution, I've one myself and the picture is fantastic. If you do look to a upgrade in the future I would consider the pistorm. It can do as little or as much as you want from a simple 020 accelerator with fast ram to an 040 with RTG graphics over hdmi. Getting one is a challenge though!

Jeremy's Retro Bar - Don't even bother trying to get an origional Amiga monitor, first trying to find one that is in good working condition won't be easy and the prices for them are crazy. I have a Amiga 2000 and got the Flickerfixer/Scandoubler for it from Individual computers, then when I heard about the RGB2HDMI adapter I got that and personally think the RGB2HDMI adapter is the better of the two. It's also alot cheaper also. The only downside of the RGB2HDMI adapter is that it only works with OCD/ECS chipset Amigas and doesn't work with AGA versions of the Amiga. If you do decide you wish to give the 500 a bit of a speed increase look into the PiStorm.

Hi Jeremy. I see you've got my membrane :) Just wanted to tell you that the membrane itself doesn't change the KB layout at all. The only diff between those UK/DE membranes is that one has "short enter" and the other "large enter". Also, I will risk and say that you didn't need a new KB membrane at all. It is very likely that the rubber pad under "enter" stud is a bit worn out or simply dirty. Just swap it with another key to confirm this. EDIT: oh, you've tested plungers already :D

I ordered a bunch of new plungers / stems to test out next. I don’t regret the membrane purchase at all I’ll keep it as a backup.

@@JeremysRetroBar Great! Regarding layout, it can be changed within the workbench. It is not membrane dependant .

Glad to finally be learning the Amiga, of course that means I'm making a lot of mistakes along the way.
