      It was obvious even in the old expanded universe that Tusken are a mixed bag. While there are cruel Tusken tribes that are outright hostile to outsiders, there are also tribes that are willing to work with outsiders: as long as you are respectable to them or somehow prove yourself, you'll have no trouble from tribes with such a positive outlook (Tusken always keep their word - a hostile tribe that has promised to ruin your day will do just that, while another tribe with whom you've reached an accord will not trouble you).

    WRT the Rakata and Tuskens, what happened was that the Tuskens'/Jawas' ancestors DID drive the Rakata off world after the Rakata had invaded and enslaved the planet, but on the way out the Rakata nuked Tatooine's entire surface in retaliation, transforming it from the lush jungle world it originally had been and into the arid desert planet we all know and love today.

The treatment both Schme Skywalker and Boba Fett are perhaps the first stage in testing their survivability of the desert. The digging for black melons and stick training are lessons in survival and culture of the tribe. @@davidbetters3458 These Tuskens are for the plot of ani to become evil and for Luke to lose his adopted parents. Why pretend that G. Lucas actually unconsiously wanted to insult native americans or was inspired by native americans?
      Germanic, Celtic etc. tribes are also depicted as savages in every movie yet I don't assosiate some random underdeveloped aliens with them. And I don't assosiate them with native Americans either. Why should I? Because they live in tents? Hate to break it to you but in every continent you still find nomadic peoples living in tents from Europe to Asia and Africa, Americas etc.
      Perhaps it is now a marketing stunt to pretend that G. Lucas was bad and now this new money grap is actually "progressive" because this and that yea don't fall for that crap sir.
      Also every population of the world is "indigenous" you Americans are too self obsessed just use native americans that means all the diverse peoples that migrated to the Americas in different waves before the 1500's.

      @davidbetters3458 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@TheTokkie Alright man that's getting a bit tl;dr here and you're reading WAY too much into what I'm saying and finding issue where there isn't any.
      I specifically mentioned in my first comment how there was clear Maori/Polynesian influence as well, especially with the Haka-esque dance at the end of Ep2. There's a reason I said "indigenous" as a catch-all rather than Native American or First Nations. No matter where indigenous people are in the world we have some degree of shared experience in the face of colonizers.
      That said, the Native American/US frontier influences are pretty clear because that train scene with the Pykes shooting at Tuskens and Banthas is practically ripped from the pages of American history, when there were advertised "buffalo hunts" in which train passengers were free to shoot into herds of buffalo for sport as well as being a means to starve out the Plains tribes.
      Not to mention, Star Wars is an American franchise in itself, so I'm not sure what you're getting at. The original trilogy took notes from contemporary US history, with the Empire being a clear stand-in for the American military in Vietnam (cough cough Endor) and George Lucas has even confirmed that much. It doesn't have to be a perfect 1:1 recreation in order to convey the general idea, and it helps the series feel more grounded, if anything.

    • @TheTokkie
      @TheTokkie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@davidbetters3458 My bad so they make things up about the Tuskens in this Disney cash crab. In the original star wars that wasn't the case. Yes you make a point that Star Wars is US made and in this new cash grab it indeed has inspirations from Native Americans.
      I worried that you had a very negative image about Native Americans it's good that you don't!
      But what have Polynesians and Maori to do with Native Americans?
      Before the Dutch invaded Indonesia or the British invaded India the Mongols had already done that. By your logic that means Austrians, Rus, Hungarians, Iranians, Indians, Iraki, Kurds, Chinese, Indonesians etc. all can be grouped together because they have "shared experiences in the face of colonisers(Mongols)". Today states such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Iran, China, Tajikistan, Afghanistan are completly founded or still face consequences of that period so it's just as relevant as later imperialism. You have not more in common with Maori or Polynesians as Irish have with Indians or Turks (same language family and or same ancestry roughly 6000 years ago)
      Also about the term "indigenous"
      Before the Danes invaded Greenland the Tunumiit from Siberia had allready massacred the native Dorset. Hell the previous scandinavians were in Greenland before the Tunumiit came(900's vs 1500's AD). So who's the colonizer and who's the "indigenous"? The worldview and classification is problematicly illdefined and disregards the fact that people have been migrating and replacing and merging for 100 000's of years. We should be conscious about that.
      I think Native Americans from north america is rich enough in culture to not be vaguely grouped to other peoples. It is considered ignorant and disrespectfull to group Greeks and Swedes in the same vague term "Europeans" as by doing so you take away the ethnical identity of Greeks and Swedes. Never group a Han Chinese with a Japanese, they will both be angry with you for that. So I don't like grouping all Native Americans from north and south into one vague group as they all have their own distinct culture from horse riding nomads to ship building explorers to city builders etc. with very diverse ancestry, language families, religion etc.

    On earth, some of the worlds most prosperous (in some ways) countries are ones that have always been dealing with harsh climates. Like up north in Europe were its cold as hell you have countries like norway and sweden which are doing very well on the global scale.
    Or like on the Eurasian Steppe, which until the industrial revolution was a rough place to live gave birth the Temujin. Who later become Ghengis Khan and went on to establish the greatest empire the world has ever seen. And that started with him unifing the people so they only had to deal with the conditions and not each other. A great example also comes later down the line when after a few decades, mongols who had been raiding in wealthy and comparitivly nice places like china were becoming soft. Just fyi, the mongols who grew up on the steppe were some of toughest and greatest warriors in the world at the time. Its what allowed them to conquer the entire civilization of China, with a much much smaller army. So they actually had an initiative to send people back to the steppe and forced them to live in the harsh conditions so they wouldnt lose their peoples toughness.
    Tough places to live mean that the people that have to survive there have to be tough, adversity makes you stronger. And no matter what they do, its always gonna be a tough place to live, so it just makes those groups of people more able to become prosperous. Compared to people living in much easier climates who dont have to deal with this stuff on the daily, they become complaciant and over time have less ambition to acheive as much. (Of course this is just a generalisation, but harsh conditions can come in many forms, not just climate and terrain, it could be from having many enemies (which led to the roman empire), etc).
    I see a lot of similarities in the tuskans traditions to this sort of thing. They live in the desert, amongst all these great beasts and also pirates and people with much better technology. But because of this theyve had to adapt and become fearsome warriors. And because theyve stay in the desert with their minimal and non improving technology, all subsequent generations of sand people are just as tough and survive just as much. Yes they are a brutal people, but as weve seen they live in very brutal conditions. And if they choose to stop living in the desert and somehow integrate themselves into the settled societies, they will loose their toughness and ability to pass down knowledge on how to survive in the desert, which would lead to the end of their people.

    i interpret the recent fleshing out of tusken culture as reflecting a paradigm shift that many anthropologist hold today towards other groups as rich in tradition knowledge by recognizing our "modern science" is not the only valuable source of knowledge in the world.
    to be frank, the line of this video describing the tuskens as in need of schooling to redeem their "savage ways" makes me shudder as even though it is obviously a fictional race i can't help be reminded of how many nations like canada, australia, and the united states in their misguided attempts to help the "primitive" left them further marginalized by forcing their views on them and excluding them from their own culture.
    i hope we get more explorations of other species and cultures like this! these details further flesh out the world and it is fun to speculate and have fun!

    The issue with the Tusken Raiders or Sand People is that they've been written as cookie cutter generic bad guys almost the entire history of Star Wars. Even KOTOR, the first Star Wars media to even give Sand People any characterization at all, had them be hyper aggressive and even if you did talk to them they would attack at the drop of a hat. It's not even considered evil to get them to attack you after successfully negotiating with them.
    Even stormtroopers had more variance and character than Sand People did. It wasn't until the Mandalorian that they were treated as anything other than cannon fodder bad guys everybody shot down by the hundreds on sight and they in turn with no sign they were anything other than unreasoning monsters. To quote another franchise: "They can't be bargained with, they can't be reasoned with, they don't experience pity or remorse, and they absolutely will not stop, EVER, until you are dead."
    Maybe that will change, but it definitely feels like a bit of a retcon what Mandalorian did. Hopefully they'll work with Sand People a lot more in the future to turn them into something fully fleshed out for the first time in Star Wars history, and not just have it be a one note plot contrivance like it was in the Mandalorian.

    • @mace3632
      @mace3632 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Calling them cookie cutter badguys is a rather uneducated take. Offworlders bombed their lush garden world into the deserts we know today. They've lived as nomadic tribes for thousands of years passing down the stories by oral tradition. They know it was the offworlders who destroyed their planet and now it is the offworlders occupying their historical lands and stealing their precious water. In many ways we are the bad guys and they are the victims.

      @@mace3632 The problem with the lore explanation is that the majority of people either don't know or simply don't care. And to be honest? I don't care much either.
      The 'cookiecutter bad guys' statement is based off of the only media evidence outside of obscuria that people know. I remember fondly my childhood days of Battlefront 1 for the Xbox clapping Tuskens in the Sarlacc level while quoting 40k; at the time my only knowledge of them, like anyone my age, was Attack of the Clones. The Tuskens went from victims to bad guys the second they appeared on screen as them, that's all they ever were for a decade of Star Wars media.
      Hell, I dimly remember there being a Jedi Academy level where you kill Tusken Raiders. They were as stock as Storm Troopers for a long time. Lore won't cut it here. It's all about the media.

    I assume the behaviour and standards of the Tuskens change from tribe to tribe. Some may hate humans to the core, others maybe just weary of them. Water is indeed a precious resource. It is unfortunate that Shmi Skywalker got caught in the middle of their raid. While their technology might be primitive, they are perfectly capable of learning to use gadgets like macrobinoculars or drive vehicles like speedbikes. Because of their isolation, they've never really tried trading at a market or hanging around in a cantina. They can relate to Mandalorians because like them, Mandalorians of the Watch never reveal themselves beneath their helmet or armour.

    Sand people are also a significant factor in Anakin's rise to becoming Darth Vader. They captured and tortured his mother. To death.
    The first thing Sand People did when they found boba is chain him up and beat the crud out of em.
    The beat the crap out of him
    When he couldnt do anything to fight back against it.
    Then proceded to drag him out into the desert to dig up *their water* while not being allowed any for himself while covered in scorching dry sand.
    People who do that to other people as a go-to.... Are right to be misunderstood. It is not worth the sit down to understand.
    It is barbarism.
    Sand people are an unkind people and make dreadfully terrible first impressions as a rule and not exceptions.

    Excuse me General Films, while they are ignorant and dumb, you have the respect the fact that they are traditionalists. They are doing what has been taught to them. Think of them as more like Native Americans (American Indians), who like the Sand People, have a deep connection and respect for the land and it's creatures. Plus, another reason why they attack outsiders its because they view them as barbaric and disrespectful for the land they call their own. As shown in Mandalorian Season 2 and the Book of Boba Fett, they keep their word, treat outsiders who earn their respect as one of their own, respect those who fully cover themselves and show courage and adaptability like every one else. Hence why Mando is able to learn more about the Sand People because he covers himself fully like they do.
