It’s hard to get how the loss of a child can be so devastating. The world should stop turning and everyone should stand and mourn with you. Crying just isn’t enough. Quiet depression just isn’t enough. And grieving comes in short episodes still, after so much time. As life goes on, it’s less for the loss of our child. As time softens our grief, as discussions help us release some pain shared, we will never get over it. We are not supposed to lose our children. Close loved ones, our remaining children, their mother and me…we show our loving kindness, grace, patience and forgiveness that we didn’t do before. She would be glad that her legacy has made us demonstrate the love we always have felt. Whewww, Luke…
Thank you for your kind words and sympathy. Losing a child is indeed a pain no parent should ever experience. This video was actually about an outdoor camping adventure, but I appreciate your prayers. On another note, if you're an outdoor enthusiast like me, you might find the Segway Portable PowerStation Cube Series interesting. It's a versatile powerhouse with a massive capacity, powerful output, and fast recharging capabilities. Definitely worth considering for your outdoor gear and backup power needs.
Bubble & Sqeak is a traditional English post-Xmas meal where the left-overs of the Xmas Roast dinner were mixed together. Traditionally it was made up of the left-over roast potatoes, brussel sprouts, carrots mashed together, formed into flat cakes about an inch thick and fried in oil or butter until light brown and crispy on the outside. Some added bits of the left-over chicken or turkey too.
I’m a Newfy (Newfoundlander) but haven’t lived there since I was little. My parents used to make “bubble and squeak” for us with the left over mashed potatoes, Brussel sprouts (that I always imagined caused the squeak 🤪), carrots and what ever else we had. They would fry it all up in a mash with some butter. It’s delicious. Now I want some 😋.
I've watched every video you have out, and I've not heard you mentioned losing a child. I am so sorry to hear that. I can relate- we lost our daughter as an infant and it's something you never ever get over.
I did not know you and Susie had lost a son. I dont remember you ever mentioning this before on any of the videos I have watched so far. My heart goes out to you. My nephew lost his 18 month old daughter about 10 years ago to a very rare nervous system disease. It was extremely hard on him, her mom, and the entire family.
So sorry to hear you have lost a child.I lost my oldest son to Rocky Mtn Spotted Tick Fever 15 years ago on Fathers day something no parent should ever face but I know he is in a better place.
I was so sorry to hear you say that one of your sons died. I cannot imagine that kind of sorrow. God bless you for not letting it destroy you. Love and Light!
Boy Luke, you sure put a lot of detail into your adventures and reviews. I guess it pays off for you financially. I am one of your first subscribers, at first when you were doing a lot of teaching and Bushcraft you reminded me Les Stroud. I think now you are in a league of your own. You are absolutely my favorite Channel. I can't imagine tuning in Thursdays and you not being there. Thanks again
Bubble and squeak saved thousands of lives in Ireland back in the day. Originally mash with cabbage. The Catholic churches would make massive pots of it for poor kids. It's lovely with boiled bacon, and you can fry a big pattie of it the next morning.
Luke, I’m an older man and over the years have learned a lot. Always open to words of wisdom. The one main thing I have used over & over is this. I play the WHAT IF game almost daily. Say or write the words WHAT IF and apply anything you want. ie, a mugger comes at me, I have no heat, I get lost in a forest etc etc. love your videos. Miles Windhams
Hey mate another great vid, your channel is my favorite. I have been watching for about three years and always look foreword to your next. All your hard work and time that goes into each one not to mention time away from your awesome wife susy does not go unnoticed. please keep them coming your mate from down under jase.
Luke & Susie, I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of one of your Children, as a parent I can’t even imagine the pain😔 You two are a shining example of excellent parents, and of an outstanding American couple living the dream. For me the Woods were always a place I wanted to be when I was happy and thankful for everything God has given me, I associate happiness and the wilderness a package deal my friend. Strength & Honor🙏🇺🇸👊
I used to camp a lot when I was a kid, and the thrill of hearing something deep in the woods. and deep in the night did cost me a few hours of sleep. Now, at 82, I just take out my hearing aids and voila! no scary noises!
Greetings from the UK Luke 👋🏻. Bubble and squeak is a very famous British dish, usually eaten for breakfast and consists of the leftovers of a Sunday roast dinner, namely cabbage, roast potatoes and other vegetables... It's delicious and is simply fried and served with scrambled eggs or eaten on its own. It gets the name 'bubble and squeak' because that's the sound it makes when its frying in the pan. -Chris.
I love the sound of rain hitting the tarp. It relaxes me right away. I think I’m one of those people who would not spend a night in the woods by myself. I have a very runaway imagination. If I’d hear a stick break, my mind would go crazy for sure. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who feels this way. I would rather stay in your little camping place on your mountain… I’d feel safer. I really enjoy going out with you and Susie 🙋🏻♀️💖🙏
Luke my hiking partner, my heart and love goes out to you and Susie. You, hopefully have some idea of how much pleasure you offer my wife and I as we go along together on your adventures. Jody and I have been married er for 63 yrs and lived our younger lives doing much what you do for recreation. All weather camping and hiking and cross country skiing to warming huts in many skiing areas. We watch your videos regularly and relive, vicariously, through our time spent with you. Thanks brother for your episodes. We pray 🙏🏼 good health and vigor to you and Susie. Continue your treks in good health. Your loss of a child is not lost on us. We pray you and Susie are close to Our Lord, who will bring you through this unbelievably difficult life trial. Thanks for your philosophical thoughts. You are one good man. John n Jody Hersh
Bubble and squeak is cabbage and potato. It’s a way to use up leftovers from a Sunday Lunch. It was always my favourite when I was a child and now my kids love it. I’m so sorry for your loss Luke. Please send my condolences to Susie x
Hello Luke, thank you for taking us along on this trip.. sorry to hear you lost your son,, I also have lost a daughter.. so I do understand the pain.. God bless you both.
I love hearing "coffee time!"! I also love watching because I love hearing your stories!! ASMR is ok for those who want it, but your stories are like sitting down with a new friend to get to know them! I feel like I am always welcome too!
Luke, you shared so very much in this vlog. My sister lost a son to SICDS. He has been gone over 30 years, and she manages, although I know the pain or should I say the scar of losing him is there and always will be. My condolences to you and Susie. Stay safe and see you in the next one.
Omg tears to my eyes I am so so sorry you and Susie for the loss of a son 💔how profound for you both! how a parent recovers if ever from this I don’t know I’m a mum of two sons myself bless your heart’s big hugs 🫂 I never miss your vlogs and always watch to the end “Your still here” love your comments here. 💙
Being Australian I grew up having bubble and squeak it's basically left over veges all mashed together then lightly cooked (fried) in a saucepan with a good dollop of butter..especially nice with left over baked veges 🦘🐨🦘🐨🦘
I remember, years ago, waking up at the halfway down camp in the grand canyon at 2am or so - a fair sized lizard having crawled onto my chest. Nothing worth worrying about, but what a way to wake up. I screamed, the lizard learned to fly, and I got zero sleep after that.
Other good video luke I Live in the UK.really injoying your channel you inspired me to make a Shelter in my back garden. Using tarpauline I don't go camping there not really a lot of places to go were I live butt I love being outdoors

Wow, what an epic adventure in the heavy rain and fog! Your video captured the thrill and challenges of hammock camping in unpredictable weather perfectly. Mother Nature truly tested your gear, and it's awesome to see how well it performed. Thanks for sharing this exciting journey!
Your enthusiasm about camping and hiking and being in the forest and woodlands is contagious and welcomed. You discussion of your emotions and history is very nice. Your success in experiencing the hammock camp in the rain is wonderful. So glad for you! Safe, happy and fun all the way. Sorry you did not get a campfire in but you were good about the reason.
Love the videos brother my 12 year old grandson is addicted to your videos very family oriented and very much appreciated keep up the great example best wishes for you and your family God bless 👍
Bubble and squeak is a fried British dish made with potatoes and cabbage. It's quite similar to the Irish colcannon. Bubble and squeak, which often contains meat such as ham or bacon, is traditionally made on Monday with the leftovers from Sunday's dinner or on Boxing Day with leftovers from the Christmas feast.. so there you go
Now that I've seen the Helikon-Tex Supertarp in dozens of adventures I feel pretty confident in ordering one myself. I really like their external "pouch" you get it in, seems easy to just throw the tarp in there when wet and letting it drain on the outside of your pack!
Bubble and squeak is the left over potato and vegetables from a roast dinner. Usually eaten the next day, it is roughly mashed together and then fried in a pan as one big Pattie or made into burger sized patties, it sort of bubbles and squeaks whilst frying. It’s essential to make sure you get a nice crispy crust on each side and is usually eaten with either a couple of fried eggs or with left over cold meat and pickles.
Luke, when I camp with new or younger folks, I tell stories, spookier the better. Why...They won't sleep, they keep wood on the fire, I stay warm...I know it right but hey, works for my old bones.
Bubble and Squeek is one of the classic dishes that has made Britsh Cuisine feared and reviled the world over ;-) After a big roast on Sunday there will be cold meat and left-over veg for Monday. The boiled potatoes and boiled cabbage are chopped up together very small and formed into a pattie, then fried until it is quite burned and crispy on the outside. This is then served with the cold meat and what we call pickle - more like your relish. The pattie can also have onion or garlic added, and salt and pepper. A little flour might be added if it is too wet. You might add other cooked veg like carrots or leeks. The boiled potatoes might be replaced by mashed. At Christmas the cabbage is often replaced by sprouts. It's a very versatile dish...
I too enjoy being outdoors just to think. I found it helpful when I lost my mom too. The pain of losing loved ones may not go away but we somehow can find ways to make it easier to live with in time. I appreciate you sharing with us what the woods means to you.
I love this video Luke, thank you for sharing. I've always had people with me when I go camping. I've always heard, never venture out alone. There's been way too many people coming up missing. But, it would be nice to try, just one time, camping on my own. And by the way, heads are my favorite.🤣😂 Great video🥰
I love your videos. Your videography just keeps getting better and better. The first five minutes had me so wowed I had to rewind and watch again. Awesome work presenting the beauty of nature in black and white as well as full color and beyond with the magnificent editing. What more can I say?
I just want to say i love your channel , the long and the shorts and look forward to your posts ,my mobility hasnt been good for years but ive been to proud to get a mobility scooter , but watching your channel both you and beautiful susie have inspired me to regain some independence , Im sorry you lost your son ,i also lost my 2nd daughter its devestating and all encompassing but i think you also count your blessings as i do and enjoy everymoment of my kids and grandkids now as my daughter made me a young grandmother, sending you love from across the pond x
Hey Luke. Bubble and Squeak is made from mashed potato and left over vegetables such as brussell sprouts, broccoli and onion all mashed together then shallow pan fried. It often resembles a hash brown in shape but not always. Should be a little crispy on the outside then softer in the middle. I'm from Yorkshire in England where we pop a little salt and pepper seasoning into it as well. That's pretty much it. So its a dish made from left overs essentially.
Bubble and Squeak is basically leftovers- mashed potatoes, other veg and maybe bits of roast, all mixed together. In my experience it’s usually baked in an oven with some cheese on top, or heated up in a frying pan. A great way to minimise kitchen scraps.
Thank you so much for talking about camping alone. In the woods, that was a very good topic to talk about things that go bump in the night. That is not my problem, my problem is like a Phobia. Do not like spiders whatsoever. That should be the next thing you should talk about on your next camp out, please. Enjoy your videos be safe take care my friend ciao for now.
Hello from Northen Wisconsin, I dont comment much but love your videos. I myself do not like camping of any kind lol but enjoy watching other's lol my idea of camping is getting a cabin with running water and toilet and stove. Thank you for sharing. Been watching your videos for over a year keep doing what you do. God bless 😊 Bubble and squeak is a fried British dish made with potatoes and cabbage. It's quite similar to the Irish colcannon. Bubble and squeak, which often contains meat such as ham or bacon, is traditionally made on Monday with the leftovers from Sunday's dinner or on Boxing Day with leftovers from the Christmas feast.
The edge is the best side of the coin..... LOL Best thing I can say about the fear of the woods is this, find a camp ground next the woods and work your way up to completely ruffing it in the woods. I like the idea of taking a camping buddy the first couple of times too.
My biggest fear is human predators! As a single female, also solo parent, I’m more afraid of humans than I am of the wildlife. Love your videos, Luke!! Thanks for this amazing video!! ❤
Agreed, especially here in the UK where we aren't allowed any kind of sensible defensive weapon. We just have to choose our spots well, and stay out of sight!
Makes it tough to impossible for us to strike out camping especially solo. Love the videos too, especially that they are generally in NC where most of my camping has been for many years.
I do not fear human predators because I pack heat in my belly band any time I am outside my home. I have had a permit to carry concealed for over 30 years. I have only pulled my weapon one time in those 30 years... and no one saw that I had my weapon out and ready... you can be ready without waving your weapon around. My weapon is NOT a toy; It is a tool to get a job done and therefore, no one needs to know I am prepared by me. I have never had to use my weapon on anyone or anything. Most situations will diffuse and do not lead to violence or active self defense, but if they do, I am ready, willing and able.
We were camped very deep in the woods. In the middle of the night someone was yelling for help. All of my alarm bells went off! I was afraid to answer because then he could locate us. Slept the rest of the night awake. I don’t know what itwas
Thank you again! I really appreciate your honesty with noises and camping for the first time. I was watching this episode with my wife and son. My wife asked how might it feel to camp alone? How is it mentally possible? Then you answered her question! 😂 I was able to share with my son strategies for camping. He started to learn. This time gave us a great moment to bond. We learned a lot! Thank you!
Bubble and squeak is a British Isles thing. It's where traditionally they'd take the leftovers from the big Sunday meal and make a side dish of mashed potatoes, leftover veggies (usually cabbage and whatever), and sometimes leftover meat like bacon.
I can fully understand your connection with the forest and relating it to your life experiences Luke it seems it was a place that gave you inner peace and a feeling of tranquility and still does.
Recently did my 4th big hike of the year in the porcupine mountains in the upper peninsula of Michigan, amazing 34 mile loop trail, watching your videos keeps me inspired to keep going out. Cheers Luke
I hear what you are saying Luke, I have never gone camping by myself before…only with family and friends. Which is why I am sticking to well used trails in my area, they are well-kept and also monitored by trained ‘park employees’ so if something happens then help won’t be very far away.
Ah, someone already explained bubble & squeak. I lived in England for eight years and ate a lot of b & s, left overs from Sunday's "tea" or dinner. I had a scary experience with a mountain lion on Arizona's Mogollon Rim. My Air Force buddies ran to my rescue. I love how you set up your hammock and tarp, very similar to mine. I also use a reflective instead of the under blanket. I've been camping solo since I was ten years old roaming the woods of Central Ohio. I much prefer solo camping than camp with others but others can save your behind when you need help. I like the stove you used...cool form factor.
Boy how I love the sounds of nature in your videos! Thank you for that. Ha! I typed the line above in the very beginning of this video. Didn't know you had the 'A Quiet Place'. I def have to check that out! Jeepers the photography is this video is extraordinary !! So may stories and scenarios could be said about each different scene. The colouring, . . . . .

The only thing I can add, is, b & s is nothing to do with Christmas,at all. It is just a leftovers dish.

I remember camping when I was a teenager. And it wasn’t until the third night. I no longer feared the forest. I felt a part of it.
Great video and great advise as always Luke! Thank for sharing these videos with us; that hammock is really the bomb it looks very comfortable.
🖤 Big love to you, Luke. Beautiful video, as always.
Danke Schön das sie mir das zu gesendet haben Sir
My heart goes out to you and Susie, I too have used the forest to heal from tragedies and to celebrate blessings, hope this is ok...I go into the wo

❤ Luke and Susie.
it's like camping outside alone and it gets dark and your brain just suddendly remembers the movie blair witch :)
Bubble and squeak is boiled potatoes and cabbage mixed together and then fried.
Thanks!
@@dave-d-grunt Yeah could well have been a meth-head
Thank you again!
I really appreciate your honesty with noises and camping for the first time.
I was watching this episode with my wife and son. My wife asked how might it feel to camp alone? How is it mentally possible?
Then you answered her question! 😂
I was able to share with my son strategies for camping. He started to learn. This time gave us a great moment to bond.
We learned a lot! Thank you!
Rain sounds were soothing. I am sorry about the lost if your child, nothing much harder. Nice video
The colouring, . . . . .
Always look forward to your videos and spending a rainy night in the forest❤
Love your camping in the rain and storms videos. My absolutely favorite videos.
great video as always...ah....refrain from nodding when you sip your morning coffee...there is a reason trust me
The work you put in to these camping trips is greatly appreciated.
