    Once the beat scene started to blow up and lofi became a genre this became the flagship machine for lofi. Cats like DiBiase and Oh No showed people what you could do with it and it catapulted it in to cult status.

      This thing was doing them lofi's loooong before that. I brought one in 2010 to pair with my MPC2KXL so I could resample and throw in effects with it. The two go together like peanut butter and chocolate. I think that setup caught on with MPC heads that didn't want to change their boxes or go DAW. It's kind of dope but oddly to me the LoFi feature on it is garbage. I just resamble then drop the bits in my MPC if I want it crunchy.

    The 404 is sometimes frustrating but also sometimes liberating. I kind of hated it when I first got mine but after I came to grips with the fact that I wasn't going to force it to be something it couldn't be, I came to love it and then I got fully obsessed with it and now I own every SP model.

    Fam, I was one of the rare few that did care back in ‘05. Indeed, the 404 changed the way peeps create as working knowledge increased. If nothing else, it continued the SP lineage of being an efx unit for samples. I still have my OG 404, and use it daily to process samples. But it started to take a back seat in ‘09 to my MV8000. Which has been my weapon of choice for many years. You forgot to mention the SP404SX. That’s the box, that sparked the lofi invasion we know and Luv now. It has all the things the OG had,. More importantly, it uses SD cards and a few efx are more prominently placed for performance use. Once more creatives got wind of these changes, it was a wrap. Especially as you mentioned those who made YT videos. I’m luv’n these video pieces fam. Keep em coming. Peace...Netm8kr 👍🏾✌🏾

      Yah, the SP-Forums were hopping with lots of folks doing awesome tunes on the 404, both high and lo-fi. Lots of tricks were discovered to get pretty tempo solid tracks just through resampling and through resampling, there wasn't a limit on effects in the song, just a limit on how many you have control over on the last take in real time.
      Very fun and creative box to use for any genre. I made drum and bass and jungle in addition to hip hop, ambient, etc. on mine. And it also was nice to just use as a 'storage box' for samples to use later. Hook it up to a turntable or cassette player, sample long chunks of stuff and chop it up later.

    Eyy there it is, great stuff. I started on a 555 before moving to an MPC, still use my 555 for the effects bank and some other fun shenanigans. I'm really glad the 404 found its place, it's a weird halfway point between sampler and groovebox and chopping samples isn't particularly intuitive but I think you hit the strengths of it really being a performance machine over a production machine really well, they're just fun machines that inspire a lot of creativity and outside the box approaches.

    I remember when it came out, I was orientating on what groove box to buy. I was hesitating between the 404 and the MPC500. I chose the latter. Even though I have never regretted that I went the MPC route, it still kept fascinating me. Like 'how do people do full beats on this thing?'. So I bought one over a year ago, and it has really been a great addition to my setup and workflow. It also totally changed the way I look at sampling, chopping and processing in general, with the resampling and not chopping everything up in 16 or 32 beats. It's challenging and a lot of fun to do a full beat inside the 404, while at the same time it's quite frustrating in some regards. Sometimes I only run my MPC's master outs through the 404 as an FX box for live jams. It indeed feels more like performing twisting those knobs and such than just simply press the "Play Start" and the Track Mutes on the MP. I sometimes hook it up to the assignable outs of the 2500 and feed it back into the 2500, resampling through the 404. Sometimes I midi sequence the 404 with the MPC. Sometimes I create a steady groove, melody, drumline or a combination of these inside the MPC, and then dump it inside the 404 to get crazy with it. Guess my point is that the best of both worlds is one of my favourite combo's to get funky.

    • @DyReckProductions
      @DyReckProductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah I think having both is cool..sometimes you want to make beats the conventional way but other times its cool to try something different..and you do low key learn alot.

      I also started with the 500 and the 404 would have been my third hardware piece shortly after I copped a 2kxl, and I agree with you. Def changed the beat process and chopping samples etc coming from the mpc world. But was so necessary. Now I have a 500, 2kxl, OG404, 303, 202, akai s900 and a KO33 (along with track recorders, daw, keyboards) And honestly I get so overwhelmed by how many ways I should or could make a beat and it drives me insane! I bought a 404 in. 2009/2010 for next to nothing in a pawn shop and then a 202 for like 40 bucks later that year. Nobody wanted them or cared. There was no boom bap revival yet and no one called beat tapes lofi hip hop at the time. I didn't see anyone really paying much attention to the 404 until years later when videos of Dibiase, Wun Two, Ras G, and Ill Brother Sugi started floating around. I'd also trace most of this shit back to the records/performers featured on Beat Pete's youtube channel. That guy was like the equivalent to stretch and bobbito for SP404 tapes and instrumental hip hop for a few years there and I think brought the 404 scene to a much wider audience without really meaning to.

    I make everything with my SX. I love it completely, it's really a limiting machine but relies on your own sense of rhythm, and it makes you use your ears, which I love.
    I never use the sequencer because you can't resample it. The only time I do is when I'm juggling with another sampler to record the sequencer, or during live performance.
    The 555 is insane. Loop capture, FX banks, velocity sensitive pads. Awesome. You could use loop capture alone to build entire beats. If they made an SP-555SX I would sell anything I could to cop it.

Imagine no TR-808, 909 and those Recording-Modes, no TB-303 (forget the film Blade, everybody knows the acid-track, no one talks about Wesley Snipes if you ask about the film, the first answer is the track). Dilla using the 404 for Donuts famously is I think one big factor that propelled the popularity. Nice explanation of how its sequencer isn't a full sequencer, but it IS something direct that you can do special. Btw you didn't mention the super unpopular successor, the SP-505 which i think came out '01 or '02? I got one used, really nice but I think it was too expensive for most ppl at the time (or they preferred an MPC or something else)

    I swear man no matter who you are it's like everyone owns an SP404/SX. Oddly it's also like one of those pieces of gear once you own it you never sell it for some reason. Rarely ever see people trying to get rid of these things. Go on Reverb or Ebay right now and see if you can even find someone trying to sell one of these things. You'd be lucky to find one or two desperate people.

    • @DyReckProductions
      @DyReckProductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are interesting pieces they could be used as midi controllers or stand alone samplers but they dont have a sequencer but they do have a looper..Since they both can take midi in I would use my software daw to sequence them and make beats that way using my daws sequencer and just playing out the melodies on the pads while messing around with the filters, tuning, start and end points and all that stuff..But if u just want them to trigger samples I think that's cool or if you want to use them as a midi controller I think that's cool..You can assign the midi note or command on the unit itself without having to go to an editor so that's cool..If I had to get one I would go for the cheaper 8 pad one since they essentially do the same thing just one has more pads..There are better options out there but if u know what your getting and is cool with that..then yeah I would choose the 8 pad one.

    • @jawazshabazz
      @jawazshabazz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DyReckProductions my main concern with it is that I won’t be able to sample directly into the device. What other options do you recommend? I really enjoyed my SP505 and 606, but they are very pricey these days.

There isn't anything more there... but obviously I use my iDevices as standalones (one iDevice one app or workflow). Making the numbers it got even cheaper (old iPhone like 5s or SE do the job in most apps)...
