I don't want to dwell on the Whitney Versus Dolly debate too much, however, I heard Whitney's cover first. After finally hearing the original ... there was a charm and honesty that I just felt coming from Dolly that I hadn't felt in the cover.
I'm about to cry. I can't explain how this original version is much MUCH more emotional than Whitney's. Something in the simplicity and sweetness of her voice, with no pretensions, just her voice looking direct to your soul.
Dolly sings like a angel no matter what she does. There will never be another dolly Parton. No one can sing her song like she does with so much feeling and love in them.
What amazes me about Dolly is how effortless she sings even in her later age. It's like she's not even trying yet she sounds soo angelic and perfect that it makes me shed a tear everytime I hear her sing especially this song. That's God-given talent.

I love the way she sings this song. Whitney's version is technically impressive but this one is leaps and bounds ahead in terms of emotion, at least to me. I think it's because she wrote it to say goodbye to a friend (he didn't die but they went their separate ways) instead of it just being a sad love song, which is why I love this version over Whitney's.

I'm coming to this close to 14 years after it was uploaded to youtube. I am old enough to remember Dolly being a regular on the Porter Wagoner show. Things change over time and Dolly outgrew that show. As I understand it, this song was a message to him after she went out on her own. This song also reminds me of the breakup of the Seekers.
