Heather Rose because It’s Dolly’s song. Whitney Houston was a wonderful singer . But when you write a song 10 years ago and put into a movie. God Bless Dolly.
Whitney's version changes the timing of the chorus phrasing, and honestly I think it's an improvement. It is very impressive though that Dolly wrote this herself!
For those now hearing Dolly sing it for the first time, please be aware that this is only part of the full song that she originally recorded back in 1974. For the sake of this scene, it was cut short but it's really worth listening to the full original recording.
Actually Dolly wrote this song for Porter Wagnor. He got Dolly started in her fame and she wanted to do her own thing after I think 12 years and they was dedicated to Porter saying she was moving on to her own record deal without his name in it.
Stephanie Diaz you tell him miss Diaz I saw her live in Australia she explained how it pissed her off because Porter Wagner would only allow her to sing it if he produced it probably her biggest money maker.

I’ve always loved the Dolly version more than the Whitney cover, it’s always made me feel more emotion than the Whitney version (which is also amazing, they’re both such phenomenal singers)
I loved that song and knew it off by heart years before The Bodyguard and Whitney's cover came out. Whitney certainly does it justice with the power of her voice, but I'll always prefer Dolly singing the song, particularly here where she puts so much meaning into it. Brings tears to my eyes every time.
Damm Whitney Houston’s version was beautiful and defied what most people can do but something about Dolly’s rendition of the song just does something to the heart strings
That's because Dolly sang the song with her heart. Whitney's rendition, while technically more perfect, just doesn't have the emotions that Dolly put into both versions of her song. Even Kristin Chenoweth's new cover, while pretty, doesn't have nearly the emotion that Dolly's versions do.
Let's NOT FORGET that DOLLY had her song #1 TWICE before Whitney recorded it. I LOVE both of their versions, but Whitney's is a THEATRICAL SHOWPIECE, while DOLLY'S IS A TRUE LOVE SONG! DOLLY for the rest of time!!

I have heard many renditions of this song but the fact is that Dolly makes this song become alive. I find her ability as a singer, song writer, and performer to be unsurpassed.
I love Whitneys version so powerful. Dolly sings it in a way that pulls at your heartstrings, because she sings it because she ment it when she wrote it, at the time she was working with Porter Wagoner and she wanted to go solo, but Porter wouldnt listen so she wrote this song. I will never be able to choose.
To those who linger onto any love, always remember it's always a gain in life, never a loss, to love someone. Those moments when you spend your time with someone are golden minutes, rays of sunshine, that make you forget you're alone.
Dolly Parton is the only one that can sing this song with so much heartfelt emotion. Just like Judy Garland singing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas."

Why did she sell it to whitney and not elvis? Whitney's movie offer more money? Seems a southern woman would want to sell it to a fellow southern man...but hey, dolly isn't rich af for no reason.
Dolly didn't refuse Elvis, she loved him too. She refused Colonel Tom Parker who wanted the rights to the song, and she wouldn't do it. She would have done it for Elvis, who wouldn't have asked for the rights, just the right to record it and perform it. Whitney's version is good but the original is better. Dolly's version really hits you. The Whitney version was also overplayed. You heard every 30 minutes on the radio. This version you don't hear enough of.
Madame Corgi you will find elvis management wanted to get this song and for elvis to record it but dolly said a big fat no because she would lose I think half the rights to the song. Dolly wrote over 3000 songs and that’s a history fact folks not just talk
Man when hes striding back up the path to her, looking all determined and strong, after putting her stuff in the trunk 😍 that's the stuff of fantasies right there
This song is always compared between Dolly and Whitney but if heard in the context of the movies they were presented, they are both equally emotionally stirring. We have been blessed by both of these ladies and their beautiful voices… ❤️
We have Rocket Man, Bohemian Rahapsody .. Both such great films. The 3rd to complete the trio can only be "I Will Always Love You" by Dolly Parton. A true made-for-movie documentary on her story. She made country music what it is today and we should respect that while she walks the Earth.
0:40 Mona: (sings) If I should stay, I would only be in your way. So I'll go, but I know I'll think of you each step of the way, and I will always love you. I will always love you. Bittersweet memories, that's all I am taking with me. Goodbye. Please don't cry. We both know that I'm not what you need, but I will always love you. I will always love you
Ed Earl and Miss Mona truly loved eachother but they were scared of what everyone would think if their relationship was public. So what I say is love is love, you can't change that, love who you want to love who gives a crap about how other or what other people think/view your relationship, do what make you happy stick with it. When Ed Earl gave up his dream for the love of his life, it goes to show, you'll have so many opportunities life will throw your way, but there is only one person you'll truly, truly love and you can't let them go.

Agreed. I’d love to be scooped up like that❤️❤️
Best version!!! So much richness of southern belle context. Love it!!!
Whitney's version is good but the original is better. Dolly's version really hits you. The Whitney version was also overplayed. You heard every 30 minutes on the radio. This version you don't hear enough of.
This is not the original version either. Dolly didn't write it.
Madame Corgi yes she did she sung it in 1974. She wrote many songs used by so called famous singers who can not write music
Madame Corgi you will find elvis management wanted to get this song and for elvis to record it but dolly said a big fat no because she would lose I think half the rights to the song. Dolly wrote over 3000 songs and that’s a history fact folks not just talk
Madame Corgi- She did write it.
Madame Corgi yes she did write it. This is her second recording of it. Her original hit #1 in 1974.
Beautiful song! I will always love it
Hello 🖐Heather, how are you doing, how is everything over there?
Man when hes striding back up the path to her, looking all determined and strong, after putting her stuff in the trunk 😍 that's the stuff of fantasies right there
Literally. I’d love a man like Ed Earl.
This is the most moving loving love song there is, it always makes me cry, they love each other so much, it’s just the best x ❤️❤️❤️
Trisha got me here
This song is always compared between Dolly and Whitney but if heard in the context of the movies they were presented, they are both equally emotionally stirring.
Oh my God, YES. I would watch that.
That would be great.
After all, we had Coal Miners Daughter about another legendary lady, so how could we not have a Dolly movie?
Dolly had emotion and you could feel the pain. Whitney's was an emotional powerhouse. Both are respectably perfection!!!
Simply perfect.

Mona: (sings) If I should stay, I would only be in your way. So I'll go, but I know I'll think of you each step of the way, and I will always love you. I will always love you. Bittersweet memories, that's all I am taking with me. Goodbye. Please don't cry. We both know that I'm not what you need, but I will always love you. I will always love you
Dolly will always reign supreme when it comes to this song.. So much emotion
Dolly Song the heck out that Song it was so Emotion I could Listen to this song all day
Burt Reynolds is awesome
Ed Earl and Miss Mona truly loved eachother but they were scared of what everyone would think if their relationship was public. So what I say is love is love, you can't change that, love who you want to love who gives a crap about how other or what other people think/view your relationship, do what make you happy stick with it. When Ed Earl gave up his dream for the love of his life, it goes to show, you'll have so many opportunities life will throw your way, but there is only one person you'll truly, truly love and you can't let them go.
