The guy sitting in the orchestra (upstage) who is watching Whitney Houston while she's singing the climax is her saxophonist (Kirk Whalum). He is part of her band. This was early 1994, in the middle of the highest point in her career. At this point in time, she tied Madonna for the most number one hits by a female musician, and was the best selling female artist in history. She had the longest running number 1 album and song by a female artist, and the best selling physical single by a female. He looks proud and moved by the moment. You can hear his saxophone in the studio recording too. Directing the orchestra is Ricky Minor, her long-time concert musical director. Together they arranged her now incomparable performance of the anthem at the Superbowl 1991.
Please don't spread lies. Watch the 1994 NAACP entertainer of yr award, the AMA merit award and the Billboard of 1993 award she had. Whitney Houston was the BEST SELLING FEMALE ARTIST IN HISTORY by that point in time! Ignorant lies
Yeah that lil vocal crack or not....her tones, intonations, runs, abilities to maneuver between alto and soprano at ease, and can we talk about the voice control... whew!
This is how you make the history... Your voice is a gift from heaven: it's divine! As Aretha Franklin said: "This girl is a talent!" Absolutely the best live singer ever... With the greatest stage presence. The only one on this earth who can thrill so much with her voice. Thank you, Nippy I love you, baby. No one like you. The Voice forever ❤❤
Those people in the audience don't know how DAMN LUCKY they were to have witnessed this moment in history. What I would give to go back in a time machine to this very moment . I'd sit right at the front of the auditorium and no doubt my entire body would be tingling. Whitney had SOUL in her little finger. Rest in Power Queen Whitney x
She was one of a kind. A gem of a singer; a firecracker of a human being-she blinded everyone and everything with her light, but she faded away unfairly soon.
Whitney was called "The Voice" for a reason. I wasn’t lucky enough to see her live, but those who did were so privileged. What stands out to me is that she never lip-synced...not even in her last performance when she sang "Jesus Loves Me." That’s why she’ll always be "The Voice." No one can ever compare. Every live performance was unique, sometimes even more powerful than the original recording. Thank you to the Grammys for honoring her and reminding us of such an incredible gift...what a gift she was to the world. We hope to see more videos like this 🙏🏽❤
Talking about a memory that deserves to be remembered from time to time. We’re lucky to be able to witness that kind of talent, even if only through our screens!
@ I’ve seen that one, it’s great. But I love this one more for the whole presentation, not just vocals. The way she looks here and walks down the steps is so regally stunning.
@ I mean, just about all of em are excellent circa 1993 - 1994. Another personal fave is Argentina 1994. The way she placed those “youuu, youuuu, youuuu” head notes near the end of the song was so beautiful. But overall, I love this presentation at the Grammys the best.
@@JesseJames-eg4mcyou must enjoying pulling things out of your arse, huh? First of all, all those musicians knew that nobody could sing better than Whitney (even with this imperfect performance). That's why they voted/awarded her as best vocal, best record and best album during that same show. Second of all, Whitney opened the show so it was too early for all them old and stiff musicians to start standing up. 😂
And this is why she was known as THE VOICE. This is how you make history. Since her departure from this world no one came close. She is the only singer in the entire world that can make me burst into tears in a matter of seconds. She had soul and class. I miss her everyday.
Her performance is a testament to her unparalleled vocal ability and emotional depth. Taking the stage at New York's iconic Radio City Music Hall, she delivered a technically flawless and deeply moving rendition, captivating audiences worldwide. Her ability to convey profound emotions through her voice transformed this performance into a timeless moment in music history. This performance not only earned her the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance but also solidified her status as one of the greatest vocalists of all time. The power and control she exhibited, especially during the song's climactic moments, left an indelible mark on all who witnessed it, becoming a defining highlight of her illustrious career. Whitney, you were and always will be wonderful!
WTH Recordibg Academy. 😭 Thank you finally for releasing and posting one of the best Grammy performances of all time! THANK YOU!! The Greatest Vocalist of All Time. Is that damned Whitney Houston! ❤❤
THE CHILLS, THE NOSTALGIA, THAT VERY MOMENT I WAS WATCHING THE BODYGUARD IN WIDESCREEN THEATER TRANSFORMS ME BACK IN TIME. SOOO STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL AND THAT POWERFUL VOICE BEYOND WORDS OF IMPRESSIVE INTENSITY! WE LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU, OUR QUEEN OF THE NIGHT WHITNEY HOUSTON 🙏🕊️💜
I remember watching this performance on live tv back then and my jaw dropped.. Thank you, Whitney for the musics and the many many beautiful memories ❤❤❤
She’s a vocalist and naturally had a voice crack. It happens to the best. And she was beyond tired at this point promoting the Bodyguard nearly 2 years.
She was rehearsing earlier that day for this performance, so her vocal cords were definitely working hard...and let’s not forget, this song is no child’s play...any vocalist knows how demanding it is. Plus, she sang live, no lip-syncing like so many do today. As for the standing ovation, it’s really not a big deal. We’re still in awe of her incredible performances decades later, which says everything about her gift. Whitney had a tone that’s truly timeless
That was just wonderful to watch. There will never ever be another Whitney Houston, she was a 1 off.She was so beautiful and elegant.Such a terrible sad loss.Gone too soon.Sleep forever in peace Darling X ❤
The best hands down. She didn’t need the audience standing ovation. Even with the tiny voice crack she knew she sang that song. I’ll always love you WHITNEY HOUSTON. No matter what this overly judgmental world think . Rip beautiful 🤍🙏🏼🙌🏼
It's so good to be a Whitney fan that you don't have to try hard to defend it. Yes, there was the slip at 1:12 that had never been seen before, until now her voice has never failed in any live performance. She always said that she hated "air conditioning" and that she was always very nervous in these important performances when it was broadcast to the whole world. I would give anything to see this live, too bad I was just a kid at the time. This is without a doubt one of the greatest or greatest live Grammy performances of all time, Whitney's vocals are unbeatable, without a doubt the best singer of all time, alive or dead. Acapella in 53 seconds, only Whitney can deliver this performance.
As fantastic as this performance is for the casual listeners I might add her best performances of I Will Always Love You are from - Radio City 1993 Chile 1994 Rainforest Event 1994 Brazil 1994 Philadelphia 1994 Also Tokyo, Japan 1997 is great.

What a treat! Thanks to the GRAMMYs for sharing this after all those decades. 🙏🏻😊
Today like Christina Aguilera didn't get standing ovations but Taylor Swift and Beyonce always get standing ovations
Even with the vocal crack at 1:12,
this is an incredible performance. 🔥
Yes i was surprised by that crack moment.
Inarguably the best Grammy 'vocal' performance.

I think this is still the single greatest live television performance in music history. Truly breath taking, there hasn’t been a performance greater.
The second. Michael Jackson was the the first Billie Jean

Whitney Houston is one hell freak of a nature. Her voice is like a comet which is very rare to be seen in a lifetime.
How the heck did the audience not give Whitney a standing ovation for this one 😅
I was about to comment the exact same thing!
The audience was other famous singers and musicians and they knew she did not do her best. Everyone knew about her addictions.
