Great video - looking forward to the follow-up when you have checked to see if you can get the Matrix version fully working. One other suggestion for a video is to retro-fit the mains socket in the rear for those vehicles that did not have this option fitted as standard.
Your right about the costs being higher as more LED components are added. I’ve got a Jag XE HSE. I had a pheasant hit the headlight a week or two ago which fully took out the unit although remarkably and despite the fact that at least half of the bird was still wedged in what remained of the light unit most of it still worked - maybe an advantage of rows of LED’s over a single bulb. The shocking bit was the cost £1970 incl VAT. I paid it as a claim off the insurance would probably have cost more in the long run over a number of years. They are definitely brighter but just watch your pocket if one goes!
We are now selling the headlight glass for most of the later Land Rover models and they have been selling really well - they are not easy to change but save a lot of cost and reduce the environmental waste - it should be law that headlight lenses can be replaced by design !
Another great video Simon I have the matrix lights on mine, they are amazing. Came with the first edition spec. As.you have said the ability to consciously know when not to glare at on coming vehicles is very clever, it automatically detects the amount of ambient light and selects between dipped and full beam and then adjusts the spray of light as on coming traffic appears. Simon
Simon the LH headlight has the control module as you stated, this also activates the fog lights when the headlights are on so the relevant one illuminates when you turn left or right.
Many thanks for so many excellent presentations putting so much light on the Defender The Headlights flat beam is to comply with regulations when driving abroad in continental Europe, or visitors driving to the UK without the need to modify their headlights. However its downside is when turning on unlight narrow roads and into entrances leaves one turning into a black unlight foreboding void, if my Defender was equipped with the fog lights these would turn on when one negotiated such an unlight tight curves, junctions and entrances. Therefor a video for upgrading the Defenders by fitting original Land rover Fog lights would go down well Thanks Rob Oakey - Germany and UK
Hi Rob - the corner visibility is very poor on the Defender and this is something we are looking at improving - i did not know the fog lights act as cornering lights - that is interesting. Full marks for your pun in the first line !
@@L663 the turning visibility without fog lights is the worst I experienced since 15 years. A solution to retrofit the original fog lights or add third party fog lights would be fantastic!
Mine came with the premiums. Must be the first time ever we got something in South Africa before the US. I find the adaptive lighting works better on highways, than suburban roads. But it still works quite well.
Great R&D and entertaining as ever. Talking of lights, I’m ready to pull the trigger on V3 of those reversing lights, if these are still up for further enhancements 🤓
Simon…the beam pattern on mine is “Flat Beam” so that when you drive abroad, you do not make any changes as the car will adjust them not to dazzle oncoming traffic whichever side it is on. Also, I get light as soon as I start the car and have the large circular drl’s but I believe mine are the Matrix version. Interesting….Onwards to Part 2🤔🤔🙂🙂🙂
Have you looked into a loom for the headlight, similar to the rear light looms you make, so we can break into the high beam wiring for some laser lights in the front grill? I don't want to chop the wiring up for it, as laser say to do.
Hi Simon , great video with options of head lights , interesting that the right has more pins than the left I like your headlight protector covers , I been looking for something similar for a late D4 . Regards mark
Interesting, mine came with premium but I found that on auto setting the high beam was distinctly poor with no real distance penetration. So much so, I had a lazar lightbar fitted. Much improved and a cheaper than the matrix option.
I have LED Matrix on my HSE X-Dynamic and they are pretty amazing. In fog you get to see the beams turning on and off. I can’t fault them at all. If you can get them they are worth it!!

Hi Simon, I have matrix led lights on my P400e (just showing off now) but to activate the matrix option there is a setting in the pivi pro to turn on that feature, so you will definitely need to upgrade the software if you want to add them to your vehicle. I can take a picture and send it to you if it helps, Also your explanation on how they work is stop on they have vertical strips that turn on and off as cars come in the opposite direction you can see it happening as you drive along. At low speed or in urban environments they are on dip beam when you drive faster and in a darker environment they go to high beam automatically and stay on all the time just cutting parts of the beam when a car comes in the opposite direction.
