    Hey Simon, you just saved me $3000~. Dealer suddenly told me my build will come without the premium LED. So, I searched on ebay and found some used ones, thinking I can just swap and play. Luckily before I pull the trigger, I watched your video. Actually, LR in N. America did not adjust the MSRP due to unavailable of many standard features (fully digital cluster, bigger screen etc.), they actually bumped it up. Not reasonable. Toyota for example did reduce their MSRP for unavailable rear view camera. Love your channel!

      I need to be careful that I do not upset any of my friends at JLR and also changing CCF files does come with risks and its not something that should be done by everyone with testing and knowledge. As mentioned it will become mainstream in years to come and when that is the case and the changes have been fully tested I will share more... right now this is very much an R&D project.

    It was possible to spec premium headlights on a base Defender (trim below S) in 2021 as well as the larger infotainment. Now it isn’t possible to spec premium headlights or infotainment on the higher S trim as I found out when ordering my second Defender. Soft close rear door has also gone, as has sunglasses holder. Even the rubber insert in the inner tailgate handle has become smaller. It is possible to spec the S with a “bright pack” and the front and rear chrome is beautiful… looks much more premium than the far more expensive X trim.

    The matrix draw the same current on dip/high beam because they are all on all the time, just if you need an oncoming vehicle a selection of LEDs go out and though there will be a lower current draw, it would be very tiny and difficult to read.

    As always, a great video! - BUT - "rest of world"??? Only ⅔ of the world drive on the right - a full ⅓ drive on the left like the UK, including Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Malta and much of Africa. Actually I saw a video by an American who looked into this and came to the conclusion that it actually makes more sense to drove on the left (and the French only drive on the right because Naploeon was left-hended and made his armies march on the right).

      ROW is NAS spec - or essentially flat beam. LHD/RHD refers to EU spec where there is a dip to one side. NAS is generally only used in North America and the Gulf States.

Canada also accepts FMVSS 108, but also accepts UNECE 48, hence Rest of World (ROW). ROW just differs between LHD/RHD, whereas USA/NAS is very much its own thing.

    So if you smash a headlight or it stops working - and purchase exact same part number unit is this then plug and play? The vin in the headlight ecu will be different i guess and will the car get upset about it? I’m trying to find out as going for cheap used off eBay might be better than 5x price for brand new plus dealers ‘coding them in’

      We do have the RHD matrix headlights in stock NEW and I am sure there are companies that can do the upgrade LR retrofits ?. Your old headlights are also worth a lot so this would take some of the pain out of the upgrade.

    • @simonjefferson
      @simonjefferson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ianriseborough4711 The issue is that LR do not allow ( or enable ) the dealer network to modify the cars build spec - and there are good reasons for this related to control etc ( if your car is crashed at some point in the future who will know the lights are not the same as fitted when built ). With the introduction of SOTA this could be controlled over the air with the dealers just fitting and supplying the hardware and I am sure this will happen in the future as I can with my Tesla - we can order upgrades on the app and buy extra software features. I think the dealer is giving you the best support they can and Land Rover cannot get enough lights due to shortages so it is a difficult situation.

  • @mercedes_and_more
    @mercedes_and_more 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So i have a Mercedes E Class (w213 current shape) which has the matrix headlights and when you go to the dealer you get a part number for lhd and rhd lights. What this acutely means is which side of the rust they are coded for as the light has no reflector to direct the beam it is all software controlled. I know this as i had mine reprogrammed to lhd when i exported the car to Germany. This was done by coding using XEntry by a coding company but i could have had it done by Mercedes but they were a little bit more expensive. There is allot of debate on Mercedes’ forums (and you can by the usb plugin coding online) to unlock NAS spec to fill adaptive (it is allowed in Canada but not the US) without changing the light.
    Long way of saying i bet if you retrofit those top spec lights you could buy left or right hand drive units and make them the correct side of the road with coding only?
    Also on Mercedes’ and BMWs you have to code each light to the car (like fuel injectors) to get the BCM make them work properly

    • @L663
      @L663  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting - I was puzzled by Land Rover selling 3 versions of each spec of light - as you say this can surely be programmed / selected in the vehicle ?
      Also what about when you travel abroad ?

    • @mercedes_and_more
      @mercedes_and_more 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@L663 normally the lights are flat but they decide sometime to dip to the right (originally to the left). When you go into the Command control system then you can change to driving on the right or the left. When you do this (so for me coming to UK and selecting left) then the lights stay flat and you loose the motorway driving lights (they raise up a bit), rain light (more light spread for less glare) and roundabout light (short throw extreme dip to the kerb). Before coding this happened when I selected driving on the right (i.e. going to France).
      As I say, 30 minutes after of coding they now default to right hand side traffic rather than left with the kick up (dip) to the right. Mercedes also do a "normal" LED as standard for the car but that (I think) does have some kind of reflector in the projector and can't be adjusted.
