Hello Scott, I always enjoy your videos. I've listen to another video which trace the story of synthesizer since the beginning. And in this story, we see how rich was the Yamaha inventions. Of course, the great DX family but other synths techniques too. Many years ago, Yamaha Music has been famous for its capacity of creation and invention. But, can we say the same thing nowaday ? No !! When was the last real invention ? Of course the Montage M is a beautiful instrument....it is the least one can expect for 4,000 $ !! It has very classical VA, Rompler and FM ! It's quite sad to see this fantastic company being so afraid of inventions. Meanwhile, many other companies, really try to innovate : Look at Novation or ASM (with its fantastic Hydrasynth), Arturia (with the Polybrute 16) for example... I am absolutely conscious that Yamaha Corp totally don't mind it's customers' opinion. I have noticed that with my Montage when I (as many other people) asked for some enhancements.
You also can use sidechain from an external audio source. Like connect a microphone to your Montage /MODX and put that microphone on the Kick of the drummer. Or connect it to your audio interface and use sidechain from other sound sources.
Many produces of recent past extensively used these kind of big workstation synths to make albums. Do you think there's still a place for these keyboards in the same context?

If it gets the job done, sure! I use mine for recording ALL the time. Even more so now with ESP.
