You are right, this is easy to overlook since Zone Master if off by default. This is an amazingly convenient function. I will now use my MODX+ to both control and play my GAIA2. Thanks!
Great video, Scott! I use this function since the original Montage came out in 2016 and it's a great feature! I use this on-stage to quickly set all 4 keyboards to the correct presets, and/or layer sounds from different keyboards. All from parts that play internal and external. HOWEVER, the Montage M suffers from a serious downgrade in my opinion. You have to choose internal OR external in the zone settings. The original montage could send out 8 different program changes and at the same time play 8 internal parts, and not loose SSS! If you do that on the montage M, you would have to use part 9-16 to send the program changes because part 1-8 are played internal, and you would loose SSS. This is a big deal in a live situation to me. Not that I need that much program changes, but I am frequently exceeding the 8 parts and loose the SSS. I allready uploaded this to ideascale before update V2 came out but sadly they didn't implement a solution where you could select both internal and external...
Great video. This has really kinda blown me away a bit. Still requires a lot of pre-planning and setup, but I'm starting to appreciate what I can possibly do with my MODX+ more and more. Cool ideas here!
I’d like to see more videos on the iConnectivity Mia. I saw your video on it, but I think it’s so underrated. Only Yamaha synth I own is a DX7 and it’s not going to control anything.
Another great video!! I know you're a Cubase user and my studio is in progress of being setup all DIN MIDI synths with mioXL MIDI Routers feeding into Cubase as well as live playing in the studio with an AH Qu-32 digital mixer... (Work in Progress). I plan to use Gig Performer to do everything you've shown here making whatever synth I want as a master controller (which will be a Fantom-06 OR an Arturia Keyboard Controller (Swappable). I would LOVE for you to TRY Gig Performer and see your tutotial on it..... Heck.... I would even be willing to pay you a consulting fee to make it all work and show how!!
please make a video how to use the Bassdrum of a Live Drummer as a "sync to"-reference in Cubase for Arpeggiator, as you did with "Audio in" on your Montage. Thank you for your Vids.
Wow...love it. Have been looking for something similar to this, preferably from a hardware synth. Scott, do you know of any other keyboard that can do this (like Korg Kronos for example)? I might consider a Montage just for this function! Have tried Camelot when it first came out but didn't really like it. Have Mainstage but I tend to use PC-based plugins & DAW. Thanks again for making this video!
While this is a fantastic feature, and well worthy of a video, it really highlights the nonsensical inability of Montage to address both USB and DIN MIDI at the same time (outside of advertising connected synths as Montage port 3). I really with Yamaha would address this in firmware to allow the two systems to be used simultaneously and addressed separately.
Very much true. The ability to route port 1 to port 3 thru a DAW does not mean it has simultaneous use of USB and DIN midi. If the DAW would crash, you would loose all midi connections incl the DIN port. You would have to go to Utility and set midi to DIN again to keep the DIN connection.
Maybe I’m missing something, but when would you need a setup like that? I’m mostly interested in jazz, funk, and maybe latin, EDM and non-western music to some extent. Even famous jazz artists like Herbie Hancock, Spyro Gyra, etc., usually use only 2 keyboards on stage. 88 keys for piano sounds and another one for some other sounds, like leads. The whole point to have 2 keyboards, so you can quickly switch between a piano and a lead sound for example or play both. I live close to the beach and many local bands are frequently playing live on the pier. I’ve never seen anyone having more than 1 or 2 keyboards. There could be more than one keyboard player in a band, but then each player would have 1 or 2 keyboards at most.
I gig with a Kronos but then use sounds from my OB-6 desktop and sometimes my V-Synth XT. So this becomes very useful for sound modules that just blend in with internal sounds on your master keyboard of choice.
I ahve a problem with my modx where the second fader has an issue. I will bring the fader all the way fown but is jumps between 4 to 17% volume. When i slide it to the top, it lowers the percentage form 127. Do you know why?
It's simple. Montage > MIDI OUT to Synth 1 > MIDI IN. Then take the MIDI THRU from SYNTH 1 to Synth 2 > MIDI IN (and form synth 2 > MIDI thru to Synth 3 > MIDI IN and on and on :))
No disrespect, but I've been doing this for years. I generally use Midi 12 to send the program changes to my wavestate unless I want to double the MODX sound which is when I'll use anything from 1 to 8. I also do the reverse at the same time and double whatever I'm playing on the wavestate, and pick up whatever is on CH12 of the MODX, which of course is not available from the MODX keyboard, only the sequencer or external midi. It works a treat because the program changes still go through..
Great Video Scott! I didn't know the MODX can do that! Now, I'm going to start using it! Thanks for sharing the knowledge!

Great tutorial! I must explore layering further!
would love to see you do this but use the Roland Fantom 6 ex as your main workstation
Excellent Scott!
Very interesting and informative, thanks for the video.
Really good tutorial!

That is cool. I use Plug In Guru Unify and it does the same kind of thing for all of my virtual synths.
Really helpful, thank you
That was Kool...!! Thank you ..

I do same with roland fantom 07.
Please show a video displaying this with the Fantom. I know you have one:-)
@Scott's Synth Stuff - Are you able to pull patches down from Soundmondo?
The button shows green but no actual connection.
It's working for me!
I do this with my Kronos as well!
I wonder if I could do this same thing with my Yamaha SX900 arranger keyboard? 🤔
Wow...love it. Have been looking for something similar to this, preferably from a hardware synth. Scott, do you know of any other keyboard that can do this (like Korg Kronos for example)? Hello sir please make a video on how to use DAW Remote In Montage M with Cubase 12/13 as i am unable to connect and their is no video on that...

You probably have some dust or condensation built up into the fader pot. Work it hard up and down a few time. A contact cleaner spray will also help.
- Cool that you can do that. But then you have to remember what you hooked up to the montage and how. Mostly useful to live performances I guess.
Is the Modx set to lokal off?
Hello sir but how to setup the cable to other synth from montage as montage has only one out
It's simple. Montage > MIDI OUT to Synth 1 > MIDI IN. Then take the MIDI THRU from SYNTH 1 to Synth 2 > MIDI IN (and form synth 2 > MIDI thru to Synth 3 > MIDI IN and on and on :))
And if your second synth doesn't have a MIDI Thru, then you can get a MIDI Thru box that has one MIDI In and multiple MIDI Outs.
And most synths without a THRU port can be configured so that their MIDI OUT jack will work as THRU instead
lol the AI generated thumbnail
MODX works the same ? cause you was doing all on the montage
Yes, exactly the same
@@ScottsSynthStuffDo You have the ability to show it on an old MODX (not +), please. I did not find the right knob for „external“.🙏
@@tenderklang in the zone settings tab there is an Int Sw setting (on/off)

Don't use AI generated pictures for your thumbnails.
Quit it with the cringe AI thumbnails !!!
Could you do this again, with better audio, but the roland fantom 👀🥲
